Sprint Disabled Carrier IQ on its Phones (The Atlantic Wire)

As federal investigations against Carrier IQ ramp up this week, Sprint said today it will be removing the company's software from its phones. The company has come into the public eye in recent weeks as folks on the internet found evidence that its software was collecting data, and even recording people's keystrokes, supposedly to?gauge?how well phones were working, but creating suspicion they might be?collecting?and using the data nefariously. The company has denied any claims of wrongdoing and says it will cooperate as governments begin to look into the affair. Sprint wasn't shy about saying today's decision was made with the concern of its customers, who probably didn't like finding out that an invisible something-or-other was maybe?reading?their text messages. From the Sprint statement:

We have weighed customer concerns and we have disabled use of the tool so that diagnostic information and data is no longer being collected. We are further evaluating options regarding this diagnostic software as well as Sprint's diagnostic needs

They are the first company to announce they're eliminating the software, though a few phone?companies?like Verizon have already stated that they'd never included it in their phones.

HBT: Cubs said to be favorites to get Fielder

Yesterday there were conflicting reports about the Cubs? interest in Prince Fielder, with Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com saying they were ?stepping up their pursuit? and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe saying they?re ?not major players? for the free agent first baseman.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com chimed in on the situation today, writing that ?the Cubs are the front-runners to sign Fielder? while also cautioning that ?these negotiations might only be in their early stages.?

According to Rosenthal the Mariners appear to be the Cubs? primary competition and he reports that neither the Marlins nor the Rangers will make a play for Fielder. Another option is the Orioles, but Rosenthal views that as unlikely unless Fielder?s other suitors dry up.

For now at least Rosenthal views Fielder as ?the Cubs? player to lose.?

Jacksonville Jaguars v Atlanta FalconsGetty Images

Blaine Gabbert is playing so badly right now that the Jaguars may consider something practically unheard of in the NFL: Taking Top 10 quarterbacks in back-to-back drafts.

Gabbert?s horrible game in Thursday night?s loss to the Falcons has continued a horrible rookie season for the quarterback the Jaguars chose with the 10th overall pick in this year?s NFL draft. Gabbert is last in the league with a passer rating of 65.6, and he looks lost out there. It?s tough to see why the Jaguars? next coach, whoever he is, would want Gabbert as his starting quarterback.

So would the Jaguars, who will likely draft somewhere between the fourth and 10th overall picks, take a quarterback? It?s impossible to say right now, as we have no idea who the new coach will be or what kind of offense he?ll run. We also don?t know where new owner Shahid Khan stands on the matter, and whether he?ll take a hands-on or hands-off approach to the draft. But if Baylor?s Robert Griffin III or USC?s Matt Barkley is available to the Jaguars, they?d have to think long and hard about drafting one of them in the Top 10.

That almost never happens. The Cowboys used their first-round picks in 1989 and 1990 on quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh, but the 1990 pick was used in the supplemental draft. (The Cowboys traded Walsh to the Saints in 1990.) The last time a team used consecutive first-round picks in the regular draft on quarterbacks was in 1982-83, when the Baltimore Colts drafted Art Schlichter and John Elway. But that was a highly unusual circumstance in which neither one of those quarterbacks played for the team in 1983: Schlichter was suspended for the entire 1983 season, and the Colts traded Elway to the Broncos before he ever played a down for Baltimore.

Before the Colts, you have to go all the way back to the early 1960s Los Angeles Rams to find a team that used first-round draft picks on quarterbacks in back-to-back years. The Rams actually drafted quarterbacks in the first round three years in a row: Roman Gabriel in 1962, Terry Baker in 1963 and Bill Munson in 1964. But Baker was a college quarterback who played halfback in the NFL, so that?s not quite the same thing, either. Prior to those Rams, the last team to draft quarterbacks in back-to-back first rounds was the 49ers, who took Earl Morrall in 1956 and John Brodie in 1957. The 49ers traded Morrall to the Steelers before the 1957 season.

What does this history lesson tell us? NFL teams only take quarterbacks in back-to-back first rounds under the most extraordinary of circumstances. If Jaguars G.M. Gene Smith takes a quarterback in the first round a year after he took Gabbert 10th overall, he?ll be doing something NFL general managers just don?t do. But Gabbert might be bad enough to make the Jaguars do it.

Christian GOP Candidates Who Hate Don't Belong in White House (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a follower of the teachings of Jesus. I am ashamed today to admit that I'm a Christian. That's because, according to some "Christians" I've heard from recently, there is a "vast secret majority of Americans who hate faggots and love God." That's a direct quote, sent to my personal email, by a reader whose dirty secret I will not expose. My "Goodbye Rick Perry" commentary upset him.

Where does it say in the Bible to "hate faggots"?

The very essence of the teaching of Jesus is to love thy neighbor. Who is my neighbor? Is my neighbor the one whose skin looks like mine, who loves the same way I do, whose parents went to the same Ivy League school mine did?

I believe that Perry has put himself out of the presidential race with his ad "Strong," which has been widely ridiculed. I stand by my conviction that not allowing gays to serve openly in the military is cruel. Does that mean that I condone a gay lifestyle? I neither condone nor reject, because that is not my job. Our soldiers are doing their job. Let them be open about the loved ones they are fighting for, not alone on foreign soil hiding in shame and secrecy. Let us not dishonor their sacrifice. There is something terribly wrong with hateful attacks towards anyone in the name of Jesus.

I don't care if a candidate is a Christian, Mormon, Muslim, Buddhist or anything else as long as he understands that my spirituality is my business. Forced religion is bigotry, and to forget that is to forget the very foundation of our history. The first immigrants to the New World came to escape religious persecution. Persecution is making a comeback, in the name of Perry's brand of Christianity.

I care that Mitt Romney is a Mormon, because he thinks his religion is relevant to the job of president, and lacks compassion, according to Elizabeth Tenety of the Washington Post.

I don't mind that Jon Huntsman is a Mormon. He supported the rights of gay people to form domestic partnerships, and respects the perspective of others, according to Dan Gilgoff, CNN religious editor on BeliefBlog. President Barack Obama's Christianity is the kind I trust. All Americans should have the right to determine for ourselves what is acceptable or not in our own lives.

Mark from Texas wrote to me, "Democracy should represent the people, and if our founders were Christian, why it is taboo to practice Christianity in a Government setting (schools)? I am not advocating forcing prayer upon those unwilling. However I am advocating morality, justice, and many other things found in Christianity." Well said, Mark, and I agree.

Morality, justice, and other excellent qualities can be found among Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and people of integrity in every faith. Let us pray in schools and include all our neighbors.

Hate is not Christian. Candidates who support hate do not belong in the White House.

Bedbugs Get Away with Incest

As if bedbugs weren?t gross enough already, entomologists have now found that they get ahead by mating with their own mothers, brothers, sisters and fathers. By inbreeding, a single pregnant female can start the infestation of an entire building on her own.

Parent-sibling matings and sibling-sibling matings are rare in the animal kingdom. So this study reveals an exception to the anti-inbreeding rule. But I?m drawn to the report for a pettier reason. As far as I?m concerned, DNA evidence has trumped the words of my landlord and a New York City housing inspector.

A few months ago, my fear that I?d soon be dealing with a bedbug problem materialized when I learned that three units in my apartment building were infested with the pests. When I asked my landlord for assurance that the infestation would be dealt with swiftly, he told me not to worry. He had hired an exterminator. But moreover, he said, the building is clean and the tenants are to blame for visiting dirty places like the new lofts nearby where college kids live. When I later relayed my concern to an inspector from New York City?s housing department, he told me that bedbugs were rampant in my area because people purchased used mattresses.

But if what these entomologists found in the multi-unit apartment buildings they visited in Jersey City, New Jersey and Raleigh, North Carolina hold true where I live in Bushwick, Brooklyn, it means that inadequate measures to exterminate bedbugs are more to blame than tenants who pick up the bugs at their friends? houses and at the used mattress market (if such a thing even exists). The team analyzed regions of DNA from bedbugs they collected in the apartments. To their surprise, they found that bedbugs in different apartments within the same or neighboring buildings arose from a single mother in the recent past. In other words, multiple infestations resulted from one person who brought the bedbugs home, rather than from independent introductions by different tenants.

?Our tentative conclusion is that bedbug introductions into a building are a fairly rare event. It seems more likely that bedbugs spread throughout a building when a tenant drags their infested mattress or other belongings down the stairs,? says Coby Schal, an entomologist at North Carolina State University in Raleigh who presented the study today at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH).

If I weren?t living in what may be bedbug ground zero, I might appreciate the extraordinary ability of bedbugs to overcome the problems associated with inbreeding. Normally, the practice comes with unhappy consequences because it gives bad, recessive mutations an opportunity to combine in single individual. Humans realized that inbreeding can be dangerous centuries ago, and made the practice taboo. ?Inbreeding avoidance? strategies exist in the animal kingdom as well. Male ants and termites sprout wings to fly far from their mothers and sisters. And male baboons, snub-nosed monkeys, and other primates often disperse from their group around puberty, perhaps to avoid mating with their kin.

Schal says he and his team, including entomologists Edward Vargo, Warren Booth, and Virna Saenz, have submitted the study for publication. He says one caveat of the study is that it included only three sites, which weren?t in highly infested neighborhoods. Perhaps my photos in the slideshow below, taken this summer on strolls around Brooklyn, will entice him to repeat the investigation here:

NEW YORK (AP) ? Newt Gingrich is praising GOP presidential rival Herman Cain for bringing optimism and big ideas to the 2012 campaign.

Gingrich, a former House speaker, made his comments at a tea party rally on New York's Staten Island, not long after Cain said he was suspending his campaign.

Polls show that Gingrich's candidacy has surged in recent weeks, with many showing him topping the Republican field.

Gingrich refused to say the race has come down to a two-man contest with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney just a month before the first vote, in Iowa.

Gingrich says any of the Republicans could rebound before the Iowa caucuses, just as he did after his campaign almost collapsed last summer.

Conrad Murray Appealing Manslaughter Conviction ??? By Himself (omg!)

Just days after being sentenced, Conrad Murray has appealed his manslaughter conviction, TMZ.com reports.

Conrad Murray sentenced to four years in prison

Murray plans to represent himself in his appeal, though he is still in contact with his defense lawyer, Nareg Gourjian. "This case presents a gold mine of issues for any appellate lawyer," Gourjian tells the site. "Dr. Murray is confident that the Court of Appeal will vindicate him."

On Tuesday, Murray was sentenced to four years in prison in the death of Michael Jackson. The sentence is the maximum term ? requested by prosecutors ? for involuntary manslaughter. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor also denied the defense attorneys' request for Murray to receive probation. Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter three weeks ago following a six-week trial.

Conrad Murray found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson case

Pastor repeatedly chastised Murray on Tuesday for his actions in caring for Jackson, who died June 25, 2009 from acute propofol intoxication. He said that Jackson died from a "totality of circumstances" that are "directly attributable" to Murray.

Leaders at Americas talks: world economy top worry (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Leaders from across Latin America and the Caribbean pledged to work together to fend off the effects of the world financial crisis and safeguard the region's growing economies.

Several presidents stressed at the start of a two-day summit Friday that they hope to ride out turbulent times by boosting their local industries and increasing trade within the region.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff led such calls, saying that if the nations are to keep thriving they will need to look more to their neighbors.

"The economic, financial crisis should be at the center of our concerns," Rousseff said. "We should respond to this crisis with a new paradigm."

Rousseff said Latin America should "realize that to guarantee its current cycle of development despite the international economic turbulence, it means that every politician must be aware that each one needs the others."

As a region, Latin America and the Caribbean have so far weathered the economic woes better than the U.S. or Europe, achieving economic growth of more than 5 percent last year.

Brazil is now one of the world's fastest growing economies, and its government said this week that it's willing to contribute funds to the International Monetary Fund to help minimize the effects of the European debt crisis.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said the region has immense potential "in this world that's going through great uncertainty, where there's a hurricane that's hitting the so-called industrialized economies hard." He said Colombia's current trade with Brazil, for instance, is minimal and could grow significantly.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez read aloud a letter from Chinese President Hu Jintao congratulating the leaders on forming a new 33-nation regional bloc, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. Hu pledged to deepen cooperation with the new group, which he said will "contribute in a significant way to strengthening the unity and the coordination among the region's countries to face global challenges together."

The U.S. remains the top trading partner of many countries in the region, with exceptions including Brazil and Chile, where China has become the biggest trading partner. China has also made diplomatic inroads, including by granting about $38 billion in loans to Venezuela in exchange for increasing shipments of oil.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez noted that experts believe the region could be vulnerable to fallout from the economic crisis. She said trade within the region should be a priority.

Some countries, such as Brazil, expressed interest in reducing imports from outside Latin America.

"Together we can be stronger, together we can grow, and that should be beneficial for everyone," Rousseff said.

Chavez and some of his closest allies, meanwhile, called for the new regional bloc to be a tool for both integration and for countering U.S. influence.

"Only unity will make us free," Chavez told the more than two dozen heads of state.

Cuban President Raul Castro said that if it's successful, the creation of the new bloc known by its Spanish initials CELAC will be "the biggest event in 200 years."

The group includes every country in Latin America and the Caribbean. Unlike the Washington-based Organization of American States, it will have Cuba as a full member and exclude the U.S. and Canada.

Both Chavez and Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa said they hope the bloc eventually leaves behind the OAS.

"We need a new inter-American system and, more specifically, a new system to guarantee human rights," said Correa, referring to the Washington-based Inter-American Human Rights Commission, which has received complaints from Ecuadorean newspapers and television channels that accuse his government of trying to silence critics.

"All these attacks and threats are made in the name of freedom of expression," he added, accusing powerful media outlets of manipulating public opinion. Correa called for creating of a committee to investigate such issues.

Other presidents said they see CELAC as a forum to resolve conflicts and build closer ties, but not as an alternative to existing bodies such as the OAS.

Santos said he also sees a role for the group in re-examining whether current counter-drug efforts are the right approach. Colombia remains the world's top producer of coca, which is used to produce cocaine.

While Santos has said the amount of land being used to grow coca plants has declined, the trade "keeps flowing the problem persists."

"There is still growing demand in the consuming countries," Santos said. He added that if there is eventually debate about legalizing cocaine and marijuana as a way of reducing drug-related violence, he wouldn't be opposed.

Automotive Producer Computer software Options | Estate Of ?

The automotive manufacturing industry started little, with early autos staying small a lot more than replacements for the horse drawn buggies of the day. They utilized a steam or fuel motor to replace the function carried out by the horse. Then, with Henry Fords modern assembly line principles, the automotive sector picked up speed. No lengthier were vehicles developed a single at a time by expert craftsmen, now they could be developed numerous at a time and the stage of skill the employees required was significantly reduced as they only worked on a single portion of the machine, over and over. The problems dealing with an automotive maker like Henry Ford have been surely much distinct than they are nowadays. The process of assembling a Model T was by any modern day standard couple of methods and very basic types as well.

Todays automotive company has to style and implement processes to cover a vast range of concerns Henry Ford could by no means have imagined. With hydraulic, electrical, laptop or computer and drive systems all failure susceptible regions which call for exact, concise processes to be assembled successfully and reliably, much more than just the human contact is required. That is exactly where the pcs of the contemporary age come in. More particularly, that is wherever automotive manufacturing software solutions occur into play.

How Can Software Support?

There are quite number of industries these days that never leverage the positive aspects of manufacturing conduite software package and the vehicle market is no different. Putting with each other a contemporary car relies on a lot of hundreds of processes coming jointly and functioning seamlessly with each other. Without having some sort of automotive manufacturing software solution, monitoring and monitoring all of these processes would be an impossible job. By making use of computer software for method administration, countless hours of tiresome procedure layout and screening can be completed on the computer, not on the factory flooring exactly where each element wasted and moment of downtime count.

What Can It Do?

Procedure management computer software can do many issues, dependent on the merchandise utilised. The most useful will function a robust method allowing for complete industrial automotive maker software package integration. These suites can enable you to create your approach on the laptop or computer, not by way of trial and error. As soon as a method is accomplished, testing alone can be completed in this virtual space. The approach can then be applied and monitored, helping to find parts of the approach that can be done far more successfully or securely, with the adjustments then applied in genuine time to the process by itself. This amount of handle can be used to any number of processes permitting for even the most intricate production to be damaged down into its constituent elements.

House panel votes to subpoena Corzine on MF Global

(AP) ? A congressional panel has voted to subpoena former Sen. Jon Corzine to compel him to testify at a hearing next week about his role leading the investment firm MF Global, which collapsed after a disastrous bet on European debt.

The House Agriculture Committee voted Friday to issue the subpoena. Committee Chairman Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said Corzine hadn't yet confirmed that he would come and "his testimony is essential to fulfill our objectives."

It woulkd be a rare appearance by a former member of Congress asked to testify under oath about a matter under federal investigation in which he was involved.

Regulators are investigating whether MF Global used money from customers' accounts for its own purposes as its financial condition worsened.

An estimated $1.2 billion or more may be missing from customer accounts.

inkstagramInkstagram is arguably the most well-known browser-based Instagram option. And it?s simple enough: you view your feed, personal photos, and likes in a grid format. This application also gives you the ability to search and create hashtag albums. You can additionally search for users.

Visual Grub

visual grubThis is a new addition to the Instagram-at-the-desktop category for Macs. It?s a free download from the Mac App Store that streams your feed, popular photos, and your favorites in real-time. Clicking on an image will pop it out from the desktop app so you can comment or like it. Offline viewing is also an option.

Instadesk

instadeskEasily one of the most popular Mac-based Instagram clients, there is no application more fully-featured than this. The download issues you an iTunes-like service that showcases your photos, friends, feed, popular photos, and lets you take your insta-addiction to new heights. You can create slideshows, enable desktop notifications, dub contacts your ?favorite friends,? download and share images, and browse tags. It?s $4.99 from the Mac App Store.

Carousel

carouselCarousel is another Mac-only application, and this one is more style than substance. With a minimalist UI, you view photos in a single column and can choose between different themes as a background to contrast them against. You can get a 15-day free trial of Carousel, which is $4.99 for keeps.

Extragram

extragramWith quite a few similarities to Inkstagram, it?s difficult to distinguish these two. Most of the details lie in subtle UI distinctions, but overall they are just simple, accessible ways to view Instagram. You can choose how you view photos via Extragram, whether in a simple grid, a filmstrip with thumbnails below, or by location. There?s also PicPlz integration and discovery options.

Gramfeed

gramfeedGramfeed?s UI is a little overwhelming, but if you can look past the distractions there are some pretty interesting features in there. Google Maps integration displays where the photos in your feed are coming from, in addition to the feed itself, which hovers users? photos on top. You can switch between your likes, photos, and popular images as well. There?s also a search bar to look for photos, users, and places. You have the option of keeping your Gramfeed specific profile private.

Kourtney Kardashian is expecting baby number two. The reality star confirms that she's pregnant in the new issue of Us Weekly. This will be the second child for Kardashian and her longtime boyfriend Scott Disick.

"Now, I'm nine weeks along," she told the magazine, going on to explain that she took a pregnancy test five weeks ago and woke up her beau to share the results. "You're supposed to wait 12 weeks to tell people, but I feel confident."

Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that the couple were engaged but it was never confirmed. Kourtney's baby news may be surprising to viewers of E!s "Kourtney & Kim Take New York," which premiered on Sunday night. The first episode of season two followed Kourtney and Scott as they worked to find the spark they once had in their relationship, before 23-month-old son Mason was born. It was also revealed on the episode that the couple of five years sleeps in separate bedrooms.

Kourtney and Scott surprised fans of the Kardashian family when they announced their first pregnancy in 2009. In fact, the couple were a bit surprised by it as well. This time, however, they were more prepared. "It wasn't like we weren't trying," Disick said. "We kind of just said, 'If it's meant to be, it'll be. '"

Kourtney's pregnancy news comes just after sister Kim's revealing quotes in the new issue of Glamour hit the Web. In the January cover story, the soon-to-be-ex of Kris Humphries admitted she has been reconsidering having a family of her own and may just have to focus on being an aunt.

"I don't know," Kim said. "I always wanted what mom and dad had. And at first I was like, 'I want six kids.' Then I went down to four, then I was down to three ... and now I'm like, 'Maybe I won't have any. Maybe I'll just be a good aunt.' "

She added, "That's how I feel. Maybe my fairy tale has a different ending than I dreamed it would. But that's OK."

Wish Kourtney and Scott Congrats on Facebook

Non-Fried Fish Might Help Ward Off Alzheimer's: Study (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Eating baked or broiled fish as little as once a week may boost brain health and lower the risk for mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, new brain scan research suggests.

The study authors found that eating baked and broiled fish -- but not fried -- helps to preserve gray matter neurons, strengthening them in areas of the brain deemed critical to memory and cognition.

"Those who eat baked or broiled fish had larger brains," noted study author Dr. Cyrus Raji, a resident in the department of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Mercy Hospital. "They had larger brain cells in areas of the brain responsible for memory and learning. And the reason that's important is that these brain areas are at high risk for Alzheimer's disease."

In those people with larger brain volume, "the risk for Alzheimer's and mild cognitive impairment went down by fivefold within five years following the brain scans we conducted," he said.

Raji said he was "amazed" that this effect was seen with eating fish as little as one to four times a week. "We're talking about just a half serving a day," he said. "And that would be a very small lifestyle change that can affect disease risk a long time down the line."

Raji and his colleagues are slated to discuss their findings Wednesday at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, in Chicago.

More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, an incurable, age-related disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking and language skills. Older adults with mild cognitive impairment have less severe memory loss than those with Alzheimer's but often go on to develop the disease.

To assess the impact of fish on cognitive health, the authors focused on 260 mentally healthy elderly individuals drawn from the Cardiovascular Health Study, sponsored by the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

All the participants underwent 3-D MRIs, so the researchers could map out the size of each individual's gray matter and track it over 10 years. They also completed the U.S. National Cancer Institute Food Frequency Questionnaire.

The team then stacked up gray matter changes against dietary consumption as reported in the questionnaire.

The questionnaires revealed that 163 of the study participants ate fish at least once a week, with most consuming fish between one and four times a week.

With that information, the authors found that regardless of age, gender, physical activity routines, and/or educational achievement, race or weight, those who ate baked or broiled fish had larger mass in the hippocampus, precuneus, posterior cingulate and orbital frontal cortex regions of their brains.

The team further observed that people who ate baked or broiled fish weekly displayed better so-called "working memory," enabling them to more effectively execute routine tasks.

But fish and chips lovers, take note: No cranial benefit was evident with respect to consumption of fried fish.

The team cautioned that while eating baked and broiled fish appears to exert some cognitive benefit, other lifestyle and socioeconomic factors may play a role. For now, the connection must be viewed as an association, rather than a cause-and-effect.

Dr. Richard Lipton, vice chair of neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City, reiterated the point.

"One has to wonder if there are other factors associated with fish consumption that they didn't measure that might be protective," he said. "Like maybe people who eat fish exercise more, or eat less total calories. Or they could be eating other components of a Mediterranean Diet, such as fruits and vegetables."

Lipton added that "this group of researchers is really, really good," and called the study results "a very interesting finding, and absolutely worthy of further exploration."

Research presented at scientific meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Social network Path announces more ways to share (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? If Facebook is like hanging out at a banquet with a large buffet to feast on, then social network Path is an intimate dinner with close friends. Path is now getting new silverware and table decorations, so to speak, with the release of updated software.

CEO Dave Morin, a Facebook alum, says the dinner-party philosophy remains but users can now share their comings and goings with up to 150 friends, up from the original 50.

With the new version available this week, a year after its debut, Path aims to be more than a sharing application. It wants to be a digital journal that documents your days with a push of a button.

Morin describes it as "a slightly social experience." You're not just updating it to share your day with others; you're recording your life for yourself.

"The idea has always been to give you a trusted place to share with your close friends and family," Morin said. "Now that the (mobile phone) is the accessory you have in your hand all the time, it's become a journal."

Path began as an iPhone application for sharing photos and videos. Users later got the ability to add one of five emoticons to their friends' photos.

The new version lets users post music and tell everyone where they are, with whom and whether they are awake or asleep. It's also compatible with Android-running phones for the first time. And, it includes technology that allows the application to make updates on its own, as long as the user agrees to it, or opts in.

For example, if you fly to Minneapolis, the application can track you with GPS and post this when you land: "Arrived in Minneapolis, it's 6:06 p.m. Mostly cloudy and 50 degrees." The location updates are neighborhood and city specific but will not pin an actual location.

Morin says the auto-updates make it easier for users to share richer content without much effort. And, while the details may seem personal, your network is only of close friends and family.

The update retains strict privacy controls, which Morin says is key to making people comfortable with sharing, especially in the wake of high-profile debates over privacy issues at Facebook.

On Tuesday, the government announced a proposed settlement with Facebook over "unfair and deceptive" business practices. The pact requires the company to get people's approval before changing how it shares their data.

The new version of Path integrates larger social networks Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, allowing status updates to those sites from the Path application.

Morin says the San Francisco-based startup has enough funding for its next stage and just hired its 20th employee. Path has more than 1 million users.

Sharp's slim 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor to further trim smartphone silhouettes

Mobile waistbands are about to get tighter. Sharp's taking that whole thin is in thing to the extreme with its just outed 12.1 megapixel, 1/3.2-inch CMOS camera module. Measuring in at 5.47 millimeters thick, this component's set to ship out to manufacturers for ¥12,000 apiece (about $154) starting tomorrow and is, apparently, the result of overwhelming demand for anorexic handsets -- we're looking at you, dear readers. Okay, not really. The company actually claims its "proprietary high-density packaging technology" (jargon, much?) is responsible for this slimmed-down image sensor that's capable of full 1080p HD capture. So, does this coming wave of starved form factors mean we can expect less bloatware? Let's all hard wink at the carriers together.

Hoop Dreams: Riots cast shadow over Games

(AP) ? Four days of rioting last August has cast a shadow over the neighborhoods where some of the world's top athletes will compete next summer at the 2012 London Games. Some Olympic events will occur only a few miles away from where Britain's worst riots in a generation shook the country.

Both London and the Olympics were irrevocably altered.

And so were the lives of those who live here. Sam Kato, 12, practices with the Newham All Star Sports Academy, an oasis in east London from the crime, gangs and drugs that helped fuel last summer's riots. The program helps keep kids out of trouble and teaches them the value of teamwork.

"It's like a family to me," the 6-foot-1 Kato said as the gym reverberated with basketballs rhythmically hitting the wooden floor. "If there were more programs like this, I doubt there would be riots."

Newham hosts the Olympic Park, center of the 2012 games.

Complex security plans for the Olympics have been altered after the riots, which shocked Britain and damaged London's image abroad. Those plans were also updated after student demonstrations in London that included a spontaneous attack on Prince Charles and wife Camilla and the "Occupy London" encampment near the city's financial district.

The riots exposed the limits of what police could handle in terms of dramatic and unforeseen events. After a weak initial response, thousands of police officers were brought in to help swamp London's streets in a show of force, discouraging further trouble.

The Olympics will already keep 12,000 officers occupied on the busiest days, so any riot repeat will push resources further still.

"(Planners) are learning the lessons from the riots," said Margaret Gilmore, an expert at the Royal United Services Institute, a respected think tank. "Some demonstrations and protests are almost inevitable and they are likely to take a tougher line and use more officers in dealing with riots."

Fears over street unrest come alongside the biggest Olympic worry: terrorism. Security has been an intricate part of the games since a terror attack at the 1972 Olympics in Munich killed 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. London has not been immune from terror attacks ? four suicide bombers targeted the city's transit network in 2005, killing 52 commuters.

But the advent of riots was a late addition to the planning mix, which has been under way for years. Even now plans are still being refined.

"What you have to remember is that in the last Olympics people were worried about al-Qaida threats," said Ellis Cashmore, a professor of culture, media and sport at Staffordshire University. "What the riots have done is alert people to the fact that London may not be such a safe city after all."

Tough economic times in Britain mean underlying tensions aren't getting better any time soon. Unemployment this year passed the 1 million mark for young people for the first time since the mid-1980s.

Austerity measures meant to put the country back in the black have cut support for many programs geared at helping young people, and Britain's youth unemployment rate has risen to about 20 percent. Youth workers say the desperation and hopelessness felt by many British teens and young adults is likely to be even worse next summer than this year.

Olympic officials have declared themselves unconcerned about any legacy from the riots. Denis Oswald, head of the International Olympic Committee's coordination commission for London, told reporters recently that he was in London during the unrest and believed the situation was "quite quickly under control."

Oswald looked at the bright side, noting that many people showed up for impromptu work crews to help hard-hit merchants clean up after the looting.

"I don't think this has put any negative image on London or on the games," he said.

The riots were triggered by the fatal police shooting of 29-year-old Mark Duggan in the working-class London district of Tottenham. Duggan's death, under disputed circumstances, touched off anger, quickly followed by thrown bricks, burning cars and looting. An interim report on the unrest concluded this week that the slow police response to the looting led people to believe they wouldn't get caught.

Between 13,000 and 15,000 people took part in the riots and the report said more than three-quarters were 24 or younger.

But there were 460 notable exceptions ? the members of Newham basketball club. Director Natasha Hart and her coaches quickly organized a training camp to give them somewhere to go for several days.

"No one was involved," she said. "I don't think that's a coincidence."

Newham is one of the poorest areas in Britain, with 25 percent of its households below the poverty line. A primary stopping point for new immigrants, dozens of languages are spoken in its schools. Many immigrants are also transient, fraying any sense of community cohesion.

Kids here worry about gangs, for gang territory is strictly defined. A block or two in any direction can become a no-go zone.

But on the basketball court, everyone is welcome.

Hart, a Russian emigre, is the daughter of an Olympic basketball player and a professional boxer who simply wanted to share her love of basketball with her two sons. The single mother started by organizing pick up games and practices at a local park.

Seven years later, she listens to the hooting and hollering in the sparkling gym at Rokeby school and shakes her head. There are little kids running around, big little kids like Kato refining their moves, teenage girls who dream of playing at American powerhouses like the University of Tennessee, and young men without jobs who just want to play.

The abbreviation of the club's name ? NASSA ? evokes the U.S. space program and its reach for the heavens, something the kids joke about.

"These children, they want to belong to something," Hart said. "I think we deserve it. Don't you?"

NY probes foreclosures on military: source (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? New York's attorney general is investigating potentially illegal home foreclosures on active-duty members of the U.S. military, according to a person familiar with the probe.

The investigation was sparked by data released earlier this month by the federal Office of the Controller of the Currency, which found thousands of cases of possibly illegal foreclosures, said this person, who did not want to be identified because the probe is not public.

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act protects active-duty service members by postponing or suspending certain civil obligations for mortgage payments, pending trials and eviction from housing.

The probe is part of a broader investigation by the office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman of major banks' mortgage operations, the person said.

Schneiderman has been a key opponent of a proposed settlement between major banks and a coalition of federal and state officials over claims of foreclosure abuses. Schneiderman has said he opposes a deal that gives banks broad immunity from lawsuits involving their mortgage practices.

Lauren Passalacqua, a spokeswoman for Schneiderman, declined to comment on the military foreclosure probe.

The investigation was reported earlier by the Financial Times.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AP) ? U.S. businessman Gary Giordano has been released from jail in Aruba after nearly four months of detention as a suspect in the disappearance of his traveling companion, Robyn Gardner.

Giordano is now free to leave the Dutch Caribbean island but his immediate plans are not clear. Prosecutors still consider him a suspect in Gardner's presumed death. He left the jail with his lawyers.

A judge allowed his pretrial detention order to expire Tuesday, ruling prosecutors failed to present enough evidence to continue holding him as a suspect in the presumed death of Robyn Gardner.

Giordano has denied wrongdoing. He says she was swept out to sea while they were snorkeling.
