Video: How should Obama run for reelection?

'One of the greatest days in baseball history'

??The final day of the regular season had already shaped up as a wild one, with the playoff picture still a blur. Boston and Tampa Bay tied for the AL wild-card spot, Atlanta and St. Louis even for the NL wild-card slot, not a single postseason pairing set. Turned out, it took at least three TVs to watch what followed.

Australia Tells Chinese Tourists: Welcome! (And Bring Your Checkbooks) (Time.com)

As Europe grapples with Greece and the U.S. struggles to create jobs, Australia's economy is soaring, driving the Australian dollar to historic heights against the U.S. dollar - something unthinkable a decade ago when Sydney hosted the 2000 Olympics. But a strong Australian dollar has not been good for tourism. In the past 10 years, tourism revenue has shrunk from 3.4% of Australia's GDP to 2.6%. The number of people flocking to Australian shores has also dropped steadily since the Olympics; according to the most recent statistics available, international arrivals were down 2.5% in July 2011from July 2010. Tourism officials realize they have a problem. In an effort to promote the country last year, a number of government and tourism bodies spent nearly $5 million to bring Oprah Down Under to tape her show. It didn't exactly work. Evidently, even Oprah's magic touch has its limits.

But there's another possible solution a little closer to home: China. The statistics speak for themselves. The Chinese are the fastest-growing tourism group in the world, with approximately 57.4 million people traveling overseas last year. Chinese tourists are now Australia's third largest market for inbound visitors, but most importantly, its fastest growing one. Within the last year, the number of visitors from the mainland has surged by 23%, contributing $3.26 billion to the economy. Australia's main tourism board, Tourism Australia, estimates that in a decade, Chinese tourists could triple their spending, pumping up to $9 billion per year into the economy. (Read about whether Australia's economy is becoming dangerously dependent on China.)

Countries all over the world have begun courting Chinese tourists in earnest, but Australia has been especially aggressive, committing $30 million over three years to its pursuit. As part of its efforts, Tourism Australia unveiled its China 2020 Strategic Plan in June aimed at nearly doubling the number of Chinese visitors to 860,000 over the next eight years. Forget dingos and Uluru - Australia isn't promoting this side of its culture to China. No, the country is pushing itself as a high-end destination for the super-rich, a place where they can buy luxury bags and clothes, stay in five-star hotels, eat in expensive restaurants and gamble in glitzy casinos. Andrew McEvoy, managing director of Tourism Australia, says Chinese tourists are attracted to Australia because it has the whole package. "It's an offering that is not just the gambling with the integrated resorts - it is gambling with great shopping, branded shopping and fantastic restaurants," he says.

To make potential tourists aware of the luxe experience that awaits them, the tourism board has taken its marketing campaign to 13 cities in the mainland so far, with hopes of expanding to more than 30 cities by 2020. Tourism officials are also working with China's main airlines - China Southern and Air China - to increase the number of routes between the countries. Three years ago, there were few direct flights between China and Australia; by the end of 2011, there will be 77 direct flights each week. Four of the five airlines that offer direct routes are, in fact, Chinese airlines.

Hotels and businesses are making visible changes to woo mainland visitors, too. Some hotel chains, for instance, have rearranged the furniture in its rooms across the country according to the principles of feng shui - assuring guests will have a harmonious stay. Accor Hotels and others are contemplating adding Chinese-language television channels to their rooms, as well. In addition, billionaire gambling tycoon James Packer has spent about $2 billion to upgrade his casinos in Melbourne and Perth in an attempt to lure Asians away from the booming casinos in Macau and Singapore. Every Chinese New Year, for instance, the Crown Casino in Melbourne holds a giant street festival in the city's Southbank neighborhood, with red lanterns hanging above the streets, food hawkers and Chinese dancers. It's just like home - only warmer. (Read about how Singapore is becoming the next hot gambling destination.)

One look around Sydney or Melbourne and it's clear there are changes afoot. Signs in Chinese characters direct new arrivals where to go at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport. Mandarin is heard on the streets of both cities as much as Spanish is heard in downtown Los Angeles. Tourist attractions like the Sydney Opera House now offer Mandarin-speaking guides or have Chinese signs posted to help mainland visitors find their way. These types of changes, however, are really only noticeable in Australia's main cities, where Chinese visitors spend the vast majority of their time. The Outback and the Great Barrier Reef may figure into an Australia trip eventually, but for the time being, most visitors are more interested in the thrills of discovering what the next retail shop has to offer. ''[Chinese tourists] want to return home from overseas trips with luxury goods as a symbol of their wealth," Sam Huang, a lecturer at the University of South Australia, pointed out recently in The Age.

Of course, Australia is not the only country aware of China's rising spending power. Earlier this year, Taiwan removed its travel restrictions for mainland citizens, allowing them to come to the island as individual tourists, not with tour groups. One of the main reasons is money. Since mainland groups began arriving in Taiwan in 2008, they've pumped $3.8 billion into the Taiwanese economy. In Europe, where Chinese tourists also love to shop, luxury stores are hiring more Mandarin-speaking assistants. The French department store Printemps even has a special entrance for Chinese groups and provides Mandarin-speaking personal shoppers to cater to their needs. The number of Chinese tourists is expected to surge in the U.S., too: the U.S. Department of Commerce says it could see a 232% increase over the next six years.

So forget Oprah, Australia. Next time see if Yao Ming is available.

British sitcom writer David Croft dies at 89 (AP)

LONDON ? Television writer David Croft, who helped create much-loved British sitcoms "Dad's Army" and "Are You Being Served?," has died aged 89.

Croft's agent Tim Hancock, said the writer died Tuesday at his holiday home in Portugal.

Several of his comedies had military settings, including "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" ? set in wartime India and Burma ? and "Dad's Army," about a hapless Home Guard unit.

Co-created with Jimmy Perry, "Dad's Army" is considered a comedy classic, and is still frequently rerun more than 40 years after its debut.

With Jeremy Lloyd, Croft wrote several series, including "'Allo 'Allo!" ? set in the unlikely comic environment of Nazi-occupied France ? and the perennially popular department-store sitcom "Are You Being Served?"

Exclusive interview: US will not end relationship with Pakistan ? The ...

Grossman urged on the need to work towards shared interests. PHOTO: AFP

WASHINGTON:?As tensions between the US and Pakistan seem to simmer down, US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador Marc Grossman said in an exclusive interview to?Express News, that ?it is not about ending the relationship with Pakistan, but about continued engagement.?

Ambassador Grossman said that Pakistan too recognises that the Haqqani network is a threat. ?The question is not whether we will work together but how we?ll work together to try and deal with these issues.?

Dubbing the US-Pakistan relationship an important one for both countries, Grossman said that the US wants this relationship to work, ?but it?s very important that both the governments and the people recognise that terrorism, and that includes the Haqqani network, is a threat to both of us.? Grossman?s statement comes as part of a series of statements from the US State Department and the Pentagon in the last three days to move away from the air of hostility that was created following Admiral Mullen?s statements on the Haqqani network and its links with the Inter-Services Intelligence.

(Read:?Volley heats up ? ISI targeted in bitter Mullen tirade)

He listed the high-level contacts between both countries, highlighting the meetings of Secretary Clinton with Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh with Deputy Secretary of State Tom Nides, and the meeting of US head of Central Command Gen James Mattis with Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and both the US and Pakistan Ambassadors continuing their engagements. He also highlighted the loss of life of Pakistani civilians since 2003 in acts of terrorism, and said that terrorism was a common enemy of both the US and Pakistan.

When asked how both countries could move forward in light of recent developments, Grossman said: ?I don?t know if people in Pakistan will agree, but we ought to be able to find a way to identify our shared interests and act on them together. We can work our way through this, that?s what friends do, we can work our way through the challenges.?

Grossman also said that there was a need to keep focused on the people-to-people relationships, citing education and student exchanges with Pakistan and the US assistance given during the floods. He said that the statements coming from Pakistani leaders also signified that they wanted to find a way to move forward. ?To me, terrorism is a threat, and we hope that joint action will get taken.?

(Read:?US-Pakistan crisis ? the either/or tribe)

Additionally, the envoy said: ?Don?t forget that a big part of Admiral Mullen?s statements was that Pakistan and the US needed to stay engaged, and that?s what we want to do. This is not about ending relationships, rupturing relationships, it is about continued engagement with Pakistan. The US is a friend of Pakistan and will be there with the country.?

As minds get quicker, teenagers get smarter

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2011) ? Adolescents become smarter because they become mentally quicker. That is the conclusion of a new study by a group of psychologists at University of Texas at San Antonio. "Our findings make intuitive sense," says lead author Thomas Coyle, who conducted the study with David Pillow, Anissa Snyder, and Peter Kochunov. But this is the first time psychologists have been able to confirm this important connection. The study appears in the forthcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal published by the Association for Psychological Science.

"Our research was based on two well-known findings, Coyle continues. "The first is that performance on intelligence tests increases during adolescence. The second is that processing speed" -- the brain taking in and using new stimuli or information -- "as measured by tests of mental speed also increases during adolescence."

To find the relationship between these two phenomena, the UTSA psychologists analyzed the results of 12 diverse intelligence and mental speed tests administered to 6,969 adolescents (ages 13 to 17) in the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. Intelligence was measured by performance on cognitive tests of diverse abilities, such as vocabulary knowledge, math facts, and mechanical comprehension. Mental speed showed up in timed tests of computing and coding -- matching digits and words and other arithmetic tasks.

In both of these categories, the researchers could see that the older teenagers did better and worked faster than the younger ones. Then, running the data in numerous ways, they discovered that the measured increase of intelligence could be accounted for almost entirely by the increase in mental speed.

This is what they expected to find, says Coyle. After all, "performance on intelligence tests reflects, in part, the speed of acquiring knowledge, learning things, and solving problems." Those cognitive processes, he says, are related to how fast the brain is working -- and all that improves during the teenage years.

The work reinforces earlier theories about the relationship between increasing processing speed in the maturing brain and the cognitive development of children.

New home sales fall to a six-month low

Sales of new U.S. homes fell 2.3 percent in August to a six-month low, recording their fourth straight declining month.

The Commerce Department said on Monday sales slipped to a seasonally adjusted 295,000-unit annual rate -- that's the lowest since February, but the amount was in line with analysts' forecasts.

What media coverage omits about U.S. hikers released by Iran

What media coverage omits about U.S. hikers released by Iran

AP Photo/IRNA, Ehsan Nederipour

In this photo released by the Islamic Republic News Agency, IRNA, on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, US hikers Shane Bauer, right, and Josh Fattal, smile, at the Tehran's Mehrabad airport before leaving Iran.

Two American hikers imprisoned for more than two years by Iran on extremely dubious espionage charges and in highly oppressive conditions,?Joshua Fattal and Shane Bauer, were released last week and spoke yesterday in Manhattan about their ordeal.? Most establishment media accounts in the U.S. have predictably exploited the emotions of the drama as a means of bolstering the?U.S.-is-Good/Iran-is-Evil narrative which they reflexively spout.? But far more revealing is what these media accounts exclude, beginning with the important, insightful and brave remarks from the released prisoners themselves (their full press conference was broadcast this morning on Democracy Now).

Fattal began by recounting the horrible conditions of the prison in which they were held, including being kept virtually all day in a tiny cell alone and hearing other prisoners being beaten; he explained that, of everything that was done to them, "solitary confinement was the worst experience of all of our lives."? Bauer then noted that they were imprisoned due solely to what he called the "32 years of mutual hostility between America and Iran," and said:?"the irony is that [we] oppose U.S. policies towards Iran which perpetuate this hostility."? After complaining that the two court sessions they attended were "total shams" and that "we'd been held in almost total isolation - stripped of our rights and freedoms," he explained:

In prison, every time we complained about our conditions, the guards would remind us of comparable conditions at Guantanamo Bay; they'd remind us of CIA prisons in other parts of the world; and conditions that Iranians and others experience in prisons in the U.S.

We do not believe that such human rights violation on the part of our government justify what has been done to us:?not for a moment. ?However, we do believe that these actions on the part of the U.S. provide an excuse for other governments - including the government of Iran - to act in kind.

[Indeed, as harrowing and unjust as their imprisonment was, Bauer and Fattal on some level are fortunate not to have ended up in the grips of the American?War on Terror detention system, where detainees remain for many more years without even the pretense of due process -- still -- to say nothing of the torture regime to which hundreds (at least) were subjected.]

Fattal then expressed "great thanks to world leaders and individuals" who worked for their release, including Hugo Chavez, the governments of Turkey and Brazil, Sean Penn, Noam Chomsky, Mohammad Ali, Cindy Sheehan, Desmond Tutu, as well as Muslims from around the world and "elements within the Iranian government," as well as U.S. officials.

Unsurprisingly, one searches in vain for the inclusion of these facts and remarks in American media accounts of their release and subsequent press conference.? Instead, typical is this ABC?News story, which featured tearful and celebratory reactions from their family, detailed descriptions of their conditions and the pain and fear their family endured, and melodramatic narratives about how their "long, grueling imprisonment is over" after "781 days in Iran's most notorious prison."? This ABC?News article on their press conference features many sentences about Iran's oppressiveness -- "Hikers Return to the U.S.: 'We Were Held Hostage'"; "we heard the screams of other prisoners being beaten" -- with hardly any mention of the criticisms Fattal and Bauer voiced regarding U.S. policy that provided the excuse for their mistreatment and similar treatment which the U.S. doles out both in War on Terror prisons around the world and even domestic prisons at home.

Their story deserves the attention it is getting, and Iran deserves the criticism.? But the first duty of the American "watchdog media" should be highlighting the abuses of the U.S. Government, not those of other, already-hated regimes on the other side of the world.? Instead, the abuses at home are routinely suppressed while those in the Hated Nations are endlessly touted.? There have been thousands of people released after being held for years and years in U.S. detention despite having done nothing wrong.? Many were tortured, and many were kept imprisoned despite U.S. government knowledge of their innocence.? Have you ever seen anything close to this level of media attention being devoted to their plight, to hearing how America's lawless detention of them for years -- often on a strange island, thousands of miles away from everything they know -- and its systematic denial of any legal redress, devastated their families and destroyed their lives?

This is a repeat of what happened with the obsessive American media frenzy surrounding the arrest and imprisonment by Iran of Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi, convicted in a sham proceeding of espionage, sentenced to eight years in prison, but then ordered released by an Iranian appeals court after four months.? Saberi's case became a true cause c?l?bre among American journalists, with large numbers of them flamboyantly denouncing Iran and demanding her release.? But when their own government imprisoned numerous journalists for many years without any charges of any kind -- Al Jazeera's Sami al-Haj in Guantanamo, Associated Press' Bilal Hussein for more than two years in Iraq, Reuters' photographer?Ibrahim Jassan even after an Iraqi court exonerated him, and literally dozens of other journalists without charge -- it was very difficult to find any mention of their cases in American media outlets.

What we find here yet again is that government-serving American establish media outlets relish the opportunity to report negatively on enemies and other adversaries of the U.S. government?(that is the same mindset that accounts for the predicable, trite condescension by the New York Times toward the Wall Street protests, the same way they constantly downplayed Iraq War protests).? But to exactly the same extent that they love depicting America's Enemies as?Bad, they hate reporting facts that make the U.S. Government look the same. ?

That's why Fattal and Bauer receive so much attention while victims of America's ongoing lawless detention scheme are ignored.? It's why media stars bravely denounce the conditions of Iran's "notorious prison" while ignoring America's own inhumane prison regime on both foreign and U.S. soil.? It's why imprisonment via sham trials in Iran stir such outrage while due-process-free imprisonment (and assassinations)?by the?U.S. stir so little.? And it's why so many Americans know Roxana Saberi but so few know Sami al-Haj.?

An actual watchdog press is, first and foremost, eager to expose the corruption and wrongdoing of their own government.? By contrast, a propaganda establishment press is eager to suppress that, and there is no better way of doing so than by obsessing on the sins of nations on the other side of the world while ignoring the ones at home.??If only establishment media outlets displayed a fraction of the bravery and integrity of Josh Fattal and?Shane Bauer, who had a good excuse to focus exclusively on Iran's sins but -- a mere few days after being released from a horrible, unjust ordeal -- chose instead to present the full picture.

Eni, Total resume some oil production in Libya (AP)

ROME ? Italian and French energy companies have resumed partial oil production in Libya after months of civil war, a potential economic lifeline for Libya's new government as it scrambles to rebuild.

Officials of Libya's transitional government are still awaiting U.N. action to unfreeze billions of dollars in assets. They say the funds unfrozen so far aren't enough to significantly rebuild Libya's health, education and other institutions after 42 years of languishing under Moammar Gadhafi's regime.

Italian energy giant Eni said Monday it has resumed oil production in Libya after months of interruption due to the civil war that toppled Gadhafi's rule. By Monday, 15 wells had been tapped, producing some 31,900 barrels of oil per day.

The French energy company Total said it had restarted some production last week.

It was not clear how long it would take Libya to return to its pre-war production of 1.6 million barrels a day.

But even the limited resumption of oil production is an important psychological sign of foreign energy companies' faith in Libya's future. Libya sits atop Africa's largest proven reserves of conventional crude, and with a population of only 6 million, raked in $40 billion last year from oil and gas exports.

"That's good news," said London-based analyst, Samuel Ciszuk of IHS Global Insight. But he quickly cautioned that "we're still talking about very small volumes."

Ciszuk stressed in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that many unknowns loom as Libya tries to resume full production.

"Many of the large fields were shut down in panic as people were leaving" to flee fighting, he said. "They might be damaged, they might not be damaged. It might be complicated."

Many locations also still await inspection, including the Sirte Basin, a stronghold of Gadhafi supporters.

"That's where most of the production comes from, and it's still been too early to get an assessment," he said.

Eni's revived production operations have focused on 15 wells at the Abu-Attifel field some 185 miles (300 kilometers) south of the eastern city of Benghazi, and are being conducted by Mellitah Oil & Gas, a partnership between Eni and Libya's state-run National Oil Corp.

Eni said other wells will be reactivated "in the coming days" to reach the "required volumes to fill the pipeline" between the Abu-Attifel field and the Zuetina port on the Mediterranean. The Abu-Attifel field was the first "giant" oil field discovered by Eni in the 1960s.

Ciszuk said those areas close to Benghazi didn't see much fighting and were "expected to come back on quickly."

The Libyans say they have enough cash in their country to cover expenses such as public sector salaries for a few months, but much more is needed if nation-building is to get going quickly.

Eni said it couldn't estimate how much of an impact its first resumption of production might have on the Libyan economy.

Officials of the transitional government have taken pains to assure the West that energy contracts from the Gadhafi era will be honored.

French company Total said Monday that it had resumed production on Sept. 23 in partnership with Libya's state-run oil company and a German company at an offshore field well called Al Jurf. Production is slowly ramping up and will eventually be 40,000 barrels a day, according to Florent Segura, a Total spokesman.

Spain's Repsol YPF said Monday it hasn't restarted production yet at the fields it operated in Libya and doesn't know when it can resume. No Repsol employees have been sent in yet but the company is using Libyans and contractors to assess its infrastructure in Libya.

"Repsol continues to closely monitor events in Libya," said company spokesman Kristian Rix.

Ciszuk noted that Repsol's oil interests include Gadhafi loyalist strongholds such as the southern desert city of Sabha.

Eni has been active in Libya, a former Italian colony, since 1959 and is the largest foreign player there in terms of hydrocarbon production. Before full-scale civil war erupted in February, Eni was producing 273,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in Libya.

Natural gas is another mainstay of Libya's economy. Eni chairman Paolo Scaroni has set what he calls an ambitious target date of mid-October for getting the gas flowing again to Italy again through the Greenstream pipeline.

Can Herman Cain keep up the momentum after his Florida straw poll win?

Herman Cain is basking in the Sunday glow of his surprise win Saturday in the Florida straw poll. But he lags in national polls, and his Florida win may draw sharper scrutiny of his positions.

Herman Cain is basking in the Sunday glow of his surprise win Saturday in the Florida straw poll.

But stark morning-after questions remain:

Can he keep up the momentum among his Republican rivals for the 2012 presidential nomination? Will the results of what is essentially a candidate beauty contest make any difference in the national polls, which are a much more accurate gauge of how the rivals are doing compared to each other (and to Barack Obama)? And will it mean sharper scrutiny ? and pointed criticism ? of his positions and policies in upcoming debates and straw poll maneuvering?

"The takeaway from Florida, that we took away, is that number one, the citizens movement is more powerful than the establishment wants to give me credit for. So yes, they keep treating me like the Rodney Dangerfield of this primary contest," Cain told Fox News Sunday.

"The voters, the people out in the field are saying we want to send a message to Washington, D.C. The establishment is not going to make this call, the people are going to make the call and that's what you saw in the Florida straw poll yesterday," he said.

Most analysts see Saturday?s unscientific Florida poll of 2,657 delegates (party activists who?d paid $175 to participate) as one blip on a long trail of debates and straw polls ? and one that mainly was a rebuke of Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Perry, whose three debate performances seem to have gotten progressively worse and some of whose positions have drawn sharp critical response from party conservatives, managed to win just 15 percent of the straw poll tally compared to 37 percent for Cain. The loss was all the more troubling for the Perry camp since the Texas governor and late entry to the race had lobbied hard for delegate votes.

?Perry?s showing in the straw poll was disastrous. He was here, he worked the crowd, and it just proves that the debate performance really undermined his support,? Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio, who was at the straw poll in Orlando this weekend, told Politico.com ?Perry?s gotta retool, reorganize and retrench very quickly.?

Cain?s principal thrust has been on the economy, mainly his ?999 Plan? for tax reform starting with a 25 percent limit on personal and business taxes, then moving to a 9 percent flat tax for businesses and individuals, plus a 9 percent national sales tax.

But he?s also made some controversial statements that may come back to haunt him if his campaign continues to succeed and he comes under greater scrutiny.

He?s called Social Security a ?scam,? for example. And he?s had to apologize to Muslim Americans for suggesting that communities could ban mosques.

So far, Cain has yet to take off in national polls. The latest Rasmussen poll gives him just 7 percent; the McClatchy-Marist poll has him at 5 percent, as does the CBS News/New York Times poll of Republican primary voters; the Bloomberg News national poll gives him 4 percent; and the CNN/Opinion Research poll puts Cain at 5 percent

Saturday evening?s straw poll in Michigan probably was even less significant than Florida?s. Not surprisingly, Mitt Romney won in his home state with 51 percent of the 681 votes cast. Perry was second with 17 percent, and Cain came in third with 9 percent. More interesting to political junkies may have been the results to a question about the most attractive possibility for the GOP?s vice presidential nominee: 23 percent for Sen. Marco Rubio, followed by 14 percent for Cain. Some analysts think Rubio ? an attractive newcomer to the national political scene ? is angling for the VP nod.

Sunglasses ? As Essential For Summer As The swimsuit | Cheap ...

Sunglasses are essential as a summer accessory! They have been popular for a long time, not only to protect your eyes, but also to complete your fashion statement. When the sun is bright we wear sunglasses all through the year. Sunglasses are even more useful in the summer because it is a time for relaxation and recreation.

Sunglasses provide important protection for your eyes. Whether you have several inexpensive pairs or one good pair, there are certain things to look for when you buy sunglasses. Look for glasses that block 99% ultraviolet rays.

UV Protection

Prolonged exposure to UV rays can be harmful to the eyes and have been linked to eye disease. People with eye disease, such as macular degeneration or retinal dystrophies need to protect their eyes when they go outside. Persons who have had cataract surgery may need extra protection too.

Mirrored sunglasses offer relief from glare but not necessarily UV protection. You should wear lenses dark enough for the brightness in which you will wear them. For especially bright conditions, such as snow skiing or water sports, you will be more comfortable with a darker lens. In most daily conditions you can wear sunglasses with a medium darkness.

Polarized glasses reduce reflected glare such as sunlight reflecting off water, pavement, or snow. They can also be combined with UV protection and are perfect for driving and fishing. The wraparound style is helpful in keeping UV rays from entering the eyes from the sides.

Buying Sunglasses Online

There are many online sites that offer great deals on brand name sunglasses. There are specialty online stores that sell quality products at discount prices. You can get a good deal on Oakley, Smith, Spy Optic, Action Optics, Costa del Mar, and Wiley X sunglasses.

You can find any style to fit your needs. There are sports sunglasses and goggles available for all variety of sports. There are sunglasses and goggles for water and snow sports, such as skiing and fishing. There are also glasses for baseball, golf, tennis, shooting and cycling. You will also find fitovers to wear for your favorite activities. Whatever your preference, you will have unlimited choices online.

Be Ready For Summer

While you are shopping online for sunglasses, you can also find great accessories to go with them. There are clips and holders and bags to protect your glasses and prevent their loss. There are even flotation cords and packs to keep them safe while you enjoy your favorite water sports!

It is time to get ready for summer. Start by purchasing sunglasses to fit your activities and lifestyle. Buy a pair that looks good on you and gives adequate protection to your eyes. When summer comes, you will be ready to enjoy fun in the sun!

Investments for my dad's retirement? | Roth Ira

September 24, 2011 ? Consultant ?

I have educated myself with a lot of information on investing, retirement planning, and income growth since I?ve graduated from college and started working in the real world. I have conveyed this information to my dad and he seemed interested. He didn?t have the luxury that I have in planning for his financial future because he was too busy working hard to raise and support the family. All he did was save money in a bank account and possibly opened a few CDS. He is currently 52 years and will be retiring around 60+. I would like to help him out by setting up a retirement account for him. I have considered a Traditional IRA and/or a Roth IRA, but I was wondering if there were any alternative options. Right now, I am strongly leaning towards an IRA and will need to determine the most conservative approach for him in terms of growth, risk, and his age. Any help or suggestion would be much appreciated?

Branding a Sport? | London Logo Design Blog

When you think of popular sporting activities in the UK, you probably think of football first. Fencing probably does not make your short list, or even your long one. Part of this lack of popularity is probably due to the fact that most of us are not thrilled with the idea of being stabbed with a sword, but part is due to a lack of branding and marketing. Fencing is seen by many people in the UK as a somewhat stuffy, elite activity that is best suited to medieval aristocrats.

How important is marketing to sports? Consider the sport of football. You see logos and other marketing designs everywhere in the UK; not only do people watch the sport itself, they wear team jerseys and buy products with their favourite logo displayed on them. Now, the sport of fencing wants to get in on the marketing action. British Fencing, an organization that supports the sport, recently adopted a new logo design that will be the basis for a UK brand promoting the activity.

The logo design is meant to appeal to a wide audience, from younger teens through elderly people and people who are completely new to fencing as well as experienced veterans. This is a very broad audience, perhaps an impossibly large one. The timing of this new logo design is not coincidental; the organization hopes that seeing fencing in the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games will inspire many people in the UK to give it a try.

The new logo design is a clean green colour, which feels both natural and safe. The name of the organization is written in bold, upper case lettering with pointed edges that refer to the sport. However, the letters are somewhat rounded, which gives a friendly feeling. A slash between the two words is in the shape of a fencing sword.

There is one key problem with this logo design, and that is the word ?fence?. This is somewhat unavoidable, but the word ?fence? can mean a variety of things, including the wooden structure that is built around a garden. The colours and shapes in this UK logo seem to point more to a company building actual fences than a sport with the same name.

There are a few ways that this could have been avoided. The logo could feature a strapline that makes it clear that it refers to the sport, or it could use an image that is obviously not appropriate for a garden fence.

On the other hand, the logo design is simple and appropriate for the sport, which are definite bonuses. We have not seen how the logo will be executed, but it is entirely possible that it will be displayed in a way that makes the meaning clear. Because this is a completely new brand, the possibilities are endless.

If you are trying to promote a sport or other activity in the UK, developing a professional brand and logo design can be very effective. We hope that this logo will invite more people to give fencing a try.

Crazy sculpture opens new Buenos Aires art center (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? A monumental new sculpture by Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto has debuted in Buenos Aires' Puerto Madero district, where decaying mills and warehouses have given way to a futuristic landscape of soaring skyscrapers and luxury hotels.

Knitting furiously with 30 helpers for two months, Neto filled a vast space in a former grain mill with colorful crochet netting, one knot at a time. Then he filled the nets with thousands of plastic balls to create swaying pathways for people to walk through, and suspended it all from the walls and ceiling. The result is a huge organic form that seems to float high above the floor, like vines spreading through the canopy of the Amazon jungle.

But the work isn't complete without an audience, which was finally allowed in this week. This is art people are supposed to touch, push through and even hang from the form, letting their animal selves emerge as they unsteadily climb through the soft, pliant forms.

Some visitors complained that the experience was unsettling, but Neto said "stability is not normal."

"People fear instability, thinking it's a crisis, but instability is the natural state of things," Neto said Thursday as he welcomed people to join his children, who were frolicking above him in the sculpture he calls "Crazy Hyperculture in the Vertigo of the World."

Neto was invited by Argentine hotel magnate and developer Alan Faena to create the work for his newly opened Faena Art Center, which will serve as a commissioning hub for a lively calendar of music, art and culture. Along with the nearby Amalia Lacroze de Fortabat modern art museum and musical performances sponsored by his Faena Hotel, it gives visitors a compelling reason to leave the historic center of Argentina's capital and explore a part of town where a construction boom has outpaced public life.

Wealthy Latin Americans have been snapping up the district's luxury apartments as hedges against inflation, but many remain empty for now, bought as investments.

"It's like all human construction ? very arid, dry, too square for me," Neto said. "My work is different, inviting. If only we could build houses like trees, growing organically, working with nature to grow. It's a fantasy I have. Because we are nature, there is no separation. It's a symbiosis. We are here to live, to know that life is good, to be happy."

In the early 1900s, Puerto Madero helped feed the world with grain, and the former mill where Neto's work now hangs was at the center of it all, processing up to 1,000 tons of wheat a day. But the property had been decaying for years when Faena began restoring it in February 2002, at the depths of Argentina's last economic crash.

His timing was fabulous. Money rushed in as Argentina swung from bust to boom. His properties now include a luxury hotel, apartments and office space that straddle seven city blocks.

"The art center is part of the whole vision," said Faena, who wore his trademark white outfit, from wide-brimmed hat to designer shoes, as he inaugurated the center. "We took a space that was destroyed, abandoned by the city, and we built it into a new center for art. This vision won't stop, ever. The essence of this transformative vision was planted long ago, a space that enables artists to grow and the people to come and enjoy themselves."

Art has brought new life to decaying urban landscapes the world over. Artists move in, then galleries open, followed by high-end apartments and more gentrification. But in this part of Buenos Aires, at least, the opposite has happened.

"They're just fast-forwarding to the luxury apartment status and the art is coming after the fact," said the Tate Modern's international art curator, Jessica Morgan.

Of course, artistic spaces are dependent on the people who come to them, which is why Morgan said the Faena Art Center ? and the money it can provide as part of its commissions ? is so important. "It's about creating something new and giving an opportunity to artists to experiment in a very unique space," Morgan said.

"Buenos Aires has such a strong history of modern and contemporary art. It has been the formative place for movements of artists since the early 20th century, with very good galleries, excellent younger artists," she added. "It's a place you can't be in without having a sense of the living contemporary culture. And it continues to evolve."

Faena is clearly thrilled that his properties are at the center of this trend.

"This is the Argentine moment," he said. "Buenos Aires is a city that has no reason to be envious of any other in the world. We have an amazing culture."

Home Security ? Putting Your Family's Safety First | Car Dvd Ipad ...

Article by Steve Klein

There is nothing like experiencing the reality of a home invasion. Homeowners who have gone through the event of having their home invaded have stated that their sense of safety and well being is severely shaken. We?ve seen it time and time again on the news and other programming, still many homeowners continue to overlook or put off getting a home security systems installed. While there are many preventative measures that you should and can take to secure your home, a monitored home security system and other security services are proven to be the most effective way to protect your home and your family.

Every homeowner needs to implement security ideas, plans, and safe ways of living into their homes. This is even more important if you have children. You must talk to them about how to deal with strangers, locking the doors, and leaving on the lights if they are alone for any period of time. To keep your home and family safe alarm systems are still the most effective way to prevent home invasions.

Having a home security system makes your home up to 3 or 4 times less likely to get broken into. The presence of a security sign or sticker is a strong factor in warding away criminals.A home security system also protects cars parked in the driveway, cutting in half the chance that they?ll get broken into.Monitored home security systems make you applicable for discounts on homeowners insurance because you become a ?low risk? client.5 Tips For Evading Home Invaders Be friendly but not overly friendly to strangers who knock at your door. Try not to feed them information about your employment or daily routines, which give them information about your financial state and about when you are out of your home. Burglars often disguise themselves as service workers or utility service associates who claim they need to inspect your home. Make sure you ask questions, verify work IDs, and/or contact the proper authorities before giving up any information about yourself and before allowing anyone suspicious into your home.It may sound obvious but homeowners must always remember to lock their doors and windows, and statistics prove that many homeowners are forgetting to do this. The statistic is staggering: 35% of burglars enter the home through unlocked doors and windows. The window is a popular place for burglars to enter a home and there are home security devices like motion censors that are available for homeowners to use near their up- and downstairs windows.Keep on the lights and/or television when you leave home and keep the curtains closed. A minimum it is a good idea to leave on the lights. This is statistically proven to keep away burglars. If you are going away on a long trip there are home security devices that simulate the presence of a television. They can be set on a timer to go on throughout the day, emitting the same light as a television screen.Another tip if you are leaving your home for more than a few days is to have a neighbor remove any leaflets, fliers and newspapers from your doorstep. Burglars have been known to leave these things and wait to see how long it takes the homeowner to remove them.Installing a door chain is a simple way to let door to door perps know that you are on your toes. This always keep them from getting to look inside your home, and gives a provides a buffer zone for you if they decide to attack.

Klein has worked in the home security and security surveillance industry for over 10 years, and believes strongly in implementing top safety standards in every home.

Fresh iPhone Apps for Sep. 21: Thuuz, OSnap! Ultimate Time Lapse, Dragons Rage, Space Trooper USA (Appolicious)

Not sure which sports games you want to check out this weekend? Grab Thuuz, an app that lets you track upcoming games, find a place to watch them and even gauge the excitement level among fans of each contest. Once you get to the bar, you might try your hand at some time-lapse photography of the excitement using OSnap! Ultimate Time Lapse. During halftime, check out a few fresh games: Dragons Rage is a turret defense-style game in which you play a dragon defending himself from raging knights and archers, and dual-stick shooter Space Trooper USA has you defending yourself from aliens on an asteroid that?s breaking up beneath your feet.

Thuuz (iPhone, iPad) Free

Keep track of your favorite sports all from one place with Thuuz. The app lets you see snapshots of upcoming games from lots of different disciplines, all from its dashboard. Tap on NCAA Football, for example, and you?ll see the next game, who?s playing it, where it?ll be, how you can watch it on TV and over a streaming Internet connection, and even track down a sports bar near you so you can take it in.

Thuuz also determines which games will likely be the most fun to seek out with its ?excitement? gauges. It judges the popularity of an upcoming game and lets you know where the excitement level is among fans, so you?ll know which upcoming game will be the best experience in a packed bar or stadium. You can also track your favorite sports and receive push notifications for when games are coming up.

Create time-lapse photo compilations with your iPhone or iPad 2 with OSnap!, an app useful for both serious and amateur or novice photographers. It works by just snapping a lot of photos, using either the rear-facing or front-facing camera on your device, and can be set to take photos every few seconds or to ?listen? for noise to trigger a shot. You might need a dock or some other such peripheral to prop your device up with, but once you do, the iPhone or iPad acts as a mounted camera, snapping away until you tell it to stop.

Once you have all your photos together, you can create a time-lapse video with the shots you?ve gathered, as well as edit them and even delete shots you don?t like or need. OSnap! supports both landscape and portrait photo modes and you can export your time-lapses at speeds of as low as one frame per minute and as fast as 100 per minute. The app also includes Facebook and YouTube integration, so showing off your handiwork to others is easy.

It?s hard to be a dragon. Medieval warriors are always heading out on adventures, trying to kill you and steal your horde of gold. No wonder you spend most of your time turning them into crispy critters with your fire breath ? they started it. But in Dragons Rage, you take on the role of the dragon and it?s your job to finish it in this turret defense title. With enemies closing in all around you, you?ll employ your fire breath to bake destroy them and tilt your device left or right to rotate and take on new threats.

Dragons Rage also includes stages in which you?ll ravage the countryside, steering your dragon as you chase down peasants and setting them aflame by blowing into your device?s microphone. Dragons Rage includes cartoony graphics (so the carnage isn?t nearly as violent as I?m making it sound), as well as Game Center support for achievements and leaderboards.

A cool-looking 3-D two-stick shooter, Space Trooper USA puts you, a lone space marine, on a small moon with just a rifle. Before long, asteroids that spew evil spiders are crashing into the planetoid, and you have to run around the ball, blasting away at the enemies. The goal is to rack up as many points as possible and survive as long as you can, but things get more and more difficult as asteroids and exploding enemies take out the very ground beneath your feet.

Space Trooper is a pretty fun arcade shooter with several power-ups and a good deal of strategy. It?s a bit pricy for the amount of content on offer ? there?s just the one gameplay mode ? so this is one to watch for a price drop. It includes some fast, heavy action, though, with Game Center support so you can see how you stack up on the game?s global leaderboards.

Physical Science
Physical Science

As part of the grades 9-12 experience, the physical science standard involves developing an understanding of the geometry of molecules. An examination of the geometry standard for the corresponding grade grouping does not yield any material that is closely connected to the kind of thinking required for understanding the examples of molecules. However the geometry standards for pre-K-2 and grades 3-5 do contain material useful in developing thinking skills that could be used to understand three-dimensional molecular structures. Specifi. ally, the visualization standard for grades 3-5 has a focus on building up three. dimensional structures from blocks. In the pre-K-2 standards, students are asked to apply transfor. mations and to use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations, skills that could again be useful in describing molecular structures. However, in sharp contrast to the strong links between K-4 math. ematics and science, the necessary concepts in geometry are not introduced concurrently with science content that might use them. Therefore, the light coordination of simple spatial concepts in the early years is not retained through high school.

The lack of connection takes two forms. In the first case, that of grades 9-12 chemistry, the way of thinking concepts that would allow the student to grasp the structure of atoms and molecules are introduced well ahead of need; therefore both students and teachers may not recall the relevant material from earlier grades. In the second case, that of the Earth and space science standard, other than the discussion of coordinate geometry, the committee could not find anything in the mathemat- ics standards that supported the complex spatial thinking process associated with the description of the motion of fluids (wind and ocean currents) on a rotating sphere. It is interesting to note that the examples and explicit ties from the mathematics to the science standards that were so noticeable for early education have largely disappeared.

But if you have some interest in language learning with software, you can choose to learn Arabic with Rosetta Stone Arabic, or Chinese with Rosetta Stone Chinese. But you should limit your vision at any rate in learning something.

There are several conclusions about the coupling of the use of spatial thinking and reasoning in the mathematics and science standards. First, there is a close connection between the mathematics (pre-K-2 and 3-5) and the science standards (K-4) in early education. Second, the development of spatial thinking and reasoning in the early years is, in the mathematics standards, aided by com. puter-based support systems. Third, this close coupling is not present during the grades 9-12 experience. Specifically, the science standards continue to presume, but do not make explicit, the use of spatial thinking and reasoning. Further, the presumed spatial thinking skills are more sophis. ticated than those being emphasized in the mathematics standards. Fourth, higher-level ability for spatial thinking is central to many key science education outcomes such as the analysis of situations in rotating frames of reference.

Finally, the science standards seem to presume a very sophisticated skill set in spatial thinking, reasoning, and representation, and it is unclear where in the education system that skill set has been developed. To the extent that spatial thinking skills are explicitly taught, the process occurs under the rubric of geometry, which is only one of ten standards that are to be met by mathematics teaching and learning. Therefore, there is currently no significant. systematic treatment of thinking as part of standards-based instruction in the United States.

Palestinians show support for Abbas' statehood bid (AP)

RAMALLAH, West Bank ? Thousands of flag-waving Palestinians rallied Wednesday in towns across the West Bank to show support for their president's bid to win U.N. recognition of a Palestinian state.

The gatherings were carefully orchestrated, with civil servants and schoolchildren given time off to participate. Despite the largely low-key mood, a new poll indicated an overwhelming majority supports President Mahmoud Abbas' quest for U.N. recognition of a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the areas Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast War.

Some said they were dismayed by the U.S. pledge to block the Palestinians, if necessary by a veto in the U.N. Security Council. In Ramallah, the crowd cheered when a masked youth on a stage burned a U.S. flag before being led away by Palestinian security forces.

"We want to live in dignity," said Atallah Wahbeh, a 60-year-old shopkeeper in Ramallah. He said it was important that the U.N. recognize a Palestinian state, even if there are repercussions, such as a possible cut in American aid.

"We don't need the Americans to buy us with money," he said.

Near Karnei Shomron, a Jewish settlement in the northern West Bank, an assailant fired on an Israeli car, causing damage but no injuries, the Israeli military said.

Nearby, Palestinians threw rocks at an Israeli car, injuring a baby girl, the military said.

The rallies were held far from possible friction points with Israeli troops, though in two locations small groups of young men broke away and threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli troops.

Israeli soldiers responded by firing tear gas and sending undercover forces into the crowd. Live TV broadcasts showed Israeli soldiers in civilian clothes arresting Palestinians who were throwing rocks. Palestinian medics said five protesters were injured, including one who was hit in the eye.

Abbas has called for peaceful marches in support of statehood, and Israeli security officials have scaled back forecasts of widespread violence.

Abbas is to address the U.N. General Assembly later this week and request full U.N. membership. With peace talks deadlocked for the past three years, the Palestinians believe a strong international endorsement will improve their position in future negotiations.

Israel and the U.S. say a Palestinian state can be established only through negotiations.

"We went to the U.N. because we are tired of negotiations for the sake of negotiations," Abbas aide Tayeb Abdel Rahim told the rally in Ramallah.

The new poll found that 83 percent of Palestinians believe Abbas' recognition quest is a good idea, even though nearly as many ? 78 percent ? expect it will make their daily lives more difficult. The survey, conducted last week by the independent Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, included 1,200 respondents and had an error margin of 3 percentage points.

The U.N. bid is seen by many Palestinians as a last option after two uprisings and two decades of on-and-off negotiations with Israel failed to produce a state, said pollster Khalil Shikaki.

Two-thirds of Palestinians favor peaceful protests, while one-third says the Palestinians should resume armed struggle, according to Shikaki's poll.

Still, some worried about possible repercussions from the U.S. or Israel. Members of Congress have threatened to cut hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. aid to the Palestinians.

Palestinians fear Israeli troops could tighten West Bank checkpoints or that Israel could suspend the transfer of tax funds it collects on behalf of the Palestinians.

"Now the Israelis will have more reasons to send us back from checkpoints, to tell us `go back to your state'," said Mahmoud Khalil, a 30-year-old from Ramallah.
