Prior To Buying Real Estate Check This Out!

Purchasing property is actually an undertaking, particularly for first timers. The estate industry , however , is a lucrative one for many of us. This work is stuffed with great real estate purchasing pointers and tips.

If your employment security is at any level of risk, then you want to think twice before purchasing a home. As quickly as you sign your mortgage papers, you become accountable for the payments on the property, no matter what your circumstances are. If your job is not secure, then you must have the means to make those payments till another income source can be found. If you cannot do this, now isn't the time to purchase a home.

Prequalification for a mortgage is essential prior to looking for a home. One reason to do this is so you do not want to stroll into your dream house to discover you cannot secure a loan for it. Furthermore, since getting a mortgage can take time, it is smart to get the ball rolling early.

Use the Net to your benefit by studying up on your new neighborhood on the internet. You will be able to find lots of info, no matter the size and population of the town. Consider the income margins, population and jobless rate of your required location before buying a house there so you make sure that you will adore where you live.

A dearth of flexibleness can be a death sentence when talking about purchasing a home. If you find a perfect house in your desired location, it may be out of your price bracket, but selecting either a different location or a less perfect house could make it reasonable. Sometimes the ideal home is not in the perfect neighborhood, or vice versa, being flexible will enable you more choices.

You have finally made a decision to purchase a house, but now you've got to find a reputable realtor. It is crucial to find a trustworthy agent. An agent that's got a proven past record will lead you in the correct direction. Look at the sites and testimonials for several real estate consultants to find one who really works for the satisfaction of the customer.

If you're serious about purchasing a house, measure it first. Ensure that the listed size matches the public records. These numbers have to be at least 100 sq. Ft. Of each other; if they do not, rethink the property or find the explanation for the anomaly.

Have a respectable approach when you barter while buying real-estate. Many purchasers attempt to provide a real low offer; but most times this approach won't get you the property that you need. Be clear and firm about what you want but let your lawyer or realtor do the negotiation for you.

If you would like to buy a spot for a business, guarantee that it is found in a good area with reasonable stability and chances for expansion. You may be unable to build an enormous customers if your business is in a rough neighborhood. Ask your Realtor about the best neighborhood to open your business.

If you are aiming to buy a home, it?s critical you do not base your decision on the home?s decor. Practical things, like structural integrity, location and functionality need to take precedence in your decision. If you focus too strongly on appearances, you will end up overlooking the important features and maybe issues of the home.

Buying real-estate will most likely be the most important purchase you'll ever make, and one of the largest decisions you will ever have to come to. Hopefully, the tips that've been covered here, have given you some of the tools you need to be more prepared to make the decision to buy real estate.

Headstone of Hitlers' parents' grave removed

Brunner says the decision was made by a relative of the family who says she does not want the grave to continue serving as a neo-Nazi pilgrimage site. (AP Photo, File) BLACK & WHITE ONLY

(AP) ? The tombstone marking the grave of Adolf Hitler's parents, a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis, has been removed from an upper Austrian village cemetery at the request of a descendant, and the grave is now available to receive new mortal remains, officials said Friday.

Walter Brunner, mayor of Leonding village, said the stone with the faded black and white portrait photos of Alois and Klara Hitler was taken down Wednesday. Village priest Kurt Pitterschatscher said the rented grave was ready for a new lease.

Asked whether he would have trouble persuading people to let their loved ones share a grave with the parents of a man whose name is a universal epitome of evil, Pitterschatscher said, "I really haven't thought about it."

Pitterschatscher said the black marble marker was removed without ceremony by a stonemason hired by the relative, described as an elderly female descendant of Alois Hitler's first wife, Anna. What's left at the site is a white gravel square and a tree.

He said he did not know the woman personally and did not identify her by name but cited her request for termination of the grave lease as saying she was too old to care for it and tired of it "being used for manifestations of sympathy" for Hitler.

Hitler's roots are in Braunau, near Leonding, which is commonly identified as his hometown after the village that he was born in was incorporated into Braunau in 1938. But he and his family moved to Leonding in 1898 when he was 9 and lived there until age 15.

Leonding itself first assumed cult status for his followers after Hitler visited his parents' grave and the nearby family house following the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany.

The house now warehouses coffins for the cemetery, and Brunner said in a telephone interview that ? unlike the more than 100-year-old grave ? it did not draw Hitler fans.

Anti-extremist groups say neo-Nazis, sometimes coming in groups, placed flowers and Nazi symbols on the grave.

Robert Eiter, with the Upper Austrian Network Against Racism and Right-Extremism, said the latest incident was on All Saints day, Nov. 1, when an urn was left with the inscription "UnvergeSSlich" ? German for "unforgettable" and alluding to Hitler's SS shock troops.

"A lot of flowers and wreaths were deposited there from people who clearly were admirers," he said. "It had to do with the son and not the parents."

Brunner, the mayor, said he was "happy with the decision," and Eiter said most Leonding residents also supported it.

Austria has moved from its postwar portrayal of being Nazi Germany's first victim to acknowledging that it was Hitler's willing partner. Most young Austrians reject Nazi ideology and condemn the part their parents might have played in the Holocaust.

At the same time, the rightist-populist Freedom Party ? whose supporters range from those disillusioned with more traditional parties to Islamophobes and Holocaust-deniers ? has become Austria's second-strongest political force.

An Anti-Defamation League survey taken this year and published last week said that ? while remaining high ? anti-Semitic attitudes decreased from 30 percent to 28 percent in Austria last year compared to 2009.

Clinton: Time running out for diplomacy with Iran

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made clear Saturday that time is running out for diplomacy over Iran's nuclear program and said talks aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon would resume in mid-April.

With speculation over a possible U.S. or Israel military attack adding urgency to the next round of discussions in Istanbul set for April 13, Clinton said Iran's "window of opportunity" for a peaceful resolution "will not remain open forever."

She also expressed doubt about whether Iran has any intention of negotiating a solution that satisfies the U.S., Israel and other countries that believe Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran contends the program is solely for peaceful energy and research purposes.

"We're going in with one intention: to resolve the international community's concerns about Iran's nuclear program," Clinton told reporters after attending a security conference in Saudi Arabia.

"Our policy is one of prevention, not containment. We are determined to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," America's top diplomat said.

"We enter into these talks with a sober perspective about Iran's intentions. It is incumbent upon Iran to demonstrate by its actions that it is a willing partner and to participate in these negotiations with an effort to obtain concrete results."

Her remarks followed President Barack Obama's announcement Friday that the U.S. was moving ahead with penalties aimed at depriving Iran of oil revenue, while also working with Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states to ensure ample global petroleum supplies.

Clinton prodded Gulf governments to develop a coordinated defense strategy against Iranian missiles. With tensions rising in the region, she said American and Gulf militaries should cooperate to improve maritime security as well.

Underscoring the limits of U.S.-Gulf cooperation, however, U.S. officials confirmed Saturday that the United Arab Emirates had shut down an American-funded democracy group, following similar Emirates action against a German organization this past week.

Discussions also covered ways to pressure Syrian President Bashar Assad to end a year of bloodshed from the uprising against his rule, but the focus was on Iran.

"It soon will be clear whether Iran's leaders are prepared to have a serious, credible discussion about their nuclear program, whether they are ready to start building the basis of a resolution to this very serious problem," Clinton said. "It is up to Iran whether they are ready to make the right choice. ... What is certain is that Iran's window of opportunity to seek and obtain a peaceful resolution will not remain open forever."

She said pressure from the economic penalties and international isolation was increasing on Iran to show it is serious about satisfying the world's concerns.

Iran and the six nations involved in the negotiations? the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China ? met in Istanbul 14 months ago. But the talks ended after two days with the sides unable to even agree on what to talk about.

Iran has used past talks to delay sanctions or try to divide the international front, while pressing ahead with its nuclear program.

Obama has underlined the need to give time for diplomacy alongside penalties. He said Friday that the U.S. would move ahead with potential measures against U.S. allies and other countries that keep buying Iranian oil. It was the latest step in the campaign to starve Iran of money for its nuclear activity.

The president said the world oil market was tight, but deep enough to keep the squeeze on Iran.

Clinton, who met Friday for almost two hours with Saudi King Abdullah, said the U.S. and Saudi Arabia share an interest in ensuring stable energy markets that foster economic growth.

She recognized the kingdom's efforts to meet increased market demand for countries weaning themselves off Iranian petroleum imports. She also said the U.S. and Sunni governments of the region would cooperate to counter Iranian threats against shipping in the Gulf and Tehran's support for "the Assad regime's murderous campaign."

Before heading to Turkey for a 60-nation "Friends of the Syrian People" meeting Sunday, Clinton lamented what she called the Assad government's shelling of civilian neighborhoods and targeting of mosques and churches.

She said these attacks have continued despite Assad's acceptance of U.N. mediator Kofi Annan's plan to end the crisis. That plan includes an immediate cease-fire and an eventual democratic transition.

In a concluding statement, the U.S. and the other countries at Saturday's meeting urged Annan to issue a timeline for putting his plan in place.

Western diplomats want to give diplomacy a chance, having invested months of effort to persuade Russia and China, veto-holding members of the U.N. Security Council, to unite behind a common approach. But they, like the Syrian opposition, fear Assad may only be playing for time.

Assad said he wants the plan to succeed, but insists the opposition must first commit to a cease-fire.

The West says the Syrian government must pull back its troops first, and U.S. officials say much of the diplomacy right now concerns the choreography of how the two sides would lay down their arms.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's violence since last March, according to U.N. estimates.

Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar are among the most impatient and have spoken about possible military intervention, from arming Syria's badly overmatched rebels to creating safe zones from which the rebels can operate.

"I believe we all agree on the need for an immediate cease-fire to the systematic killing," Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said at a news conference with Clinton.

He said the Syrian government's crackdown has "reached the level, at the very least described as crimes against humanity, on which the international community should not remain silent."

Washington fears a military escalation could lead to all-out civil war and play into Assad's hands, considering his vastly more powerful military.

Clinton said officials meeting in Turkey would discuss "additional steps to increase pressure on the regime, provide humanitarian assistance despite the efforts of the regime to block access and advance plans for an inclusive, democratic and orderly transition that addresses the aspirations of the Syrian people."

Clinton also expressed concern about increased pressure across the region on civic groups, in particular those advocating political or democratic reforms. It was an apparent reference to the Emirates' move this past week against the U.S.-based National Democratic Institute and Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

2 Serious Reasons Insurance Alone is not Enough Asset Protection ...

Although a comprehensive insurance plan is part of every good estate plan, there are 2 very serious reasons why insurance is not full asset protection.

  1. Coverage Limits
  2. Coverage Exclusions

Insurance Coverage Limits

You only have as much insurance as you purchase and it is impossible to buy enough insurance to cover some of the huge verdicts that are returned (i.e., $11.8 million, stemming from a car accident.)

But, get good advice from your estate planning attorney and your insurance professional and with their help develop the best comprehensive insurance plan for your situation.

Be sure that plan includes umbrella liability insurance, which raises the limits on your homeowners and auto policies to whatever limit you purchase such as $1 million or $5 million dollars.

Umbrella liability insurance also known as personal catastrophic insurance is an inexpensive and excellent investment.? If you own a business, you need business umbrella liability as well.

Insurance Coverage Exclusions

You?ve likely heard of claims being denied because the insurance policy has an exclusion such as a homeowner?s policy doesn?t cover either flooding or ?acts of God? such as an earthquake.

But, there are many more exclusions.? For example, some umbrella liability insurance policies exclude claims arising from dogs, lawn mowers, business activities, guns, intentional acts, dangerous sports, and dangerous equipment.

Bottom Line Insurance Advice

Understand what your insurance policies cover and exclude.? Consult with a qualified estate planning attorney to make sure you have a comprehensive insurance plan in place as well as additional asset protection measures.? Insurance alone is not enough.

Business Coach Asks the Hard Questions - NYTimes.com

In my last post, Susan Martin, a business coach, pressed Alexandra Mayzler to articulate her vision for her company, Thinking Caps Tutoring. Ms. Mayzler was clear that she wanted to see a ?revolution in education? that elevated the importance of study skills. She was less clear, however, about what role her company might play in this revolution.

Next, Ms. Martin turned to Susan Parker, who owns Bari Jay, which makes and sells bridesmaid and prom dresses. ?My vision is much shorter than Alexandra?s,? Ms. Parker said. ?I just want to have more control over my manufacturing.?

?Let?s take it one step further,? Ms. Martin responded. ?If you had more control, what would that allow you to do??

?To grow the way I want to grow,? Ms. Parker said. ?Right now, I?m so dependent on how many dresses I can get made and where and how that I?m constantly worried.? Last year, she said, Bari Jay grew so quickly that she wondered if its success would lead to its demise. ?If people can?t get the dresses they ordered, they?re not going to want to do business with you,? she said. Things worked out in the end and have improved this year, but looking ahead, Ms. Parker believes manufacturing in Asia, where prices are rising, will become increasingly challenging. ?If you push them too much, either with delivery or price, then you sacrifice on quality,? she said, ?and that?s one thing we?re trying not to do.?

Ms. Parker hired a consultant to help Bari Jay explore other options. ?I?m looking into domestic production again, but I?m still unionized, which makes it difficult,? she said. If Bari Jay manufactures its dresses in the United States, it must use union factories, an expensive proposition. ?On top of that, the U.S. doesn?t really have the skilled workers anymore,? she said. Still, Ms. Parker is speaking with union representatives to see what is possible, and her consultant is trying to find suitable union factories.

Central America, which her consultant suggested, is also under consideration. She asked him to research it, and get back to her. Ms. Parker said someone suggested Bari Jay build its own factory. ?I?m like, O.K., that sounds really expensive and really difficult,? she said. ?But get me information and I?ll look into it.? Ms. Parker feels the issue is in good hands and the process has just begun.

Ms. Martin asked how things would change for Bari Jay if its manufacturing woes disappeared.

Ms. Parker said she envisioned no major changes. She loves Bari Jay?s business model, which focuses on selling through smaller boutiques as opposed to department stores that take a greater chunk of the profit. ?I want to grow, but keep my margins the same,? she said.

In a perfect world,?Ms. Martin asked, how would your role change?

Ms. Parker said it probably wouldn?t change either. As a result of their work with their own business coach (not Ms. Martin), Ms. Parker said she and her sister, a co-owner, were seeing the big picture more and had mostly freed themselves from the compulsion to micromanage their employees. To the extent Ms. Parker keeps a hand in certain day-to-day tasks, she said, ?It?s because I?m a control freak and I like those things.?

Turning to Jessica Johnson, Ms. Martin asked her to share her vision for her company, Johnson Security Bureau.

?My vision is more long-term,? said Ms. Johnson. ?I want to have something that I can pass on to my children ? I don?t have any children yet ? and that they would want to be involved with.?

Like Ms. Parker, Ms. Johnson is pleased with developments at her business and would like to continue growing. ?If we just close the contracts that we?re currently negotiating, we?ll double last year?s sales,? she said. Just as they did from 2010 to 2011.

?Nice job,? said Ms. Mayzler.

But Ms. Johnson isn?t complacent. Because Johnson Security waits 30 to 90 days for payment on various contracts, it is exploring ways to bring in money faster. The company could, for example, offer training, product sales, or consulting services, in addition to traditional security services.

?What?s your biggest challenge?? Ms. Martin asked.

?Talent development,? Ms. Johnson said, without hesitation. Even though the skills required of security guards are very basic, many candidates lack them. Most of her employees have neither high school diplomas, nor G.E.D.s. ?Similar to what Alexandra said, our education system isn?t preparing people to have basic skills,? she said. ?So, we?re expected as employers to train the workforce.?

The security industry is also dogged by low expectations. Ms. Johnson said her customers self select to a degree, but it?s common for companies to balk at paying more than $8-an-hour for security guards. ?If you want someone that is going to be alert, and able to write reports and speak intelligently, you?re going to have to pay that person more,? she said. ?If you don?t want to pay for it, then I?m not going to do business with you. There are 400 other companies you can deal with.?

?What have you done to address these issues so far?? Ms. Martin asked.

?We just try to stay very hands-on with clients, and over-communicate with them,? Ms. Johnson said. She recently visited one who was impressed that she made the effort. No matter how busy she gets, Ms. Johnson said, these visits are important because they help her understand her clients? businesses and let them know she cares. ?They know there?s a difference,? she said. ?For those who aren?t there yet, as my grandmother would say, you just have to keep loving on them until they get it.?

As for her employees, ?It?s a work in progress,? Ms. Johnson said. ?Some will get it and stay with the company and those who don?t will leave ? churn and burn.?

Genes for learning, remembering, forgetting

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Certain genes and proteins that promote growth and development of embryos also play a surprising role in sending chemical signals that help adults learn, remember, forget and perhaps become addicted, University of Utah biologists have discovered.

"We found that these molecules and signaling pathways [named Wnt] do not retire after development of the organism, but have a new and surprising role in the adult. They are called back to action to change the properties of the nervous system in response to experience," says biology Professor Andres Villu Maricq, senior author of the new study in the March 30 issue of the journal Cell.

The study was performed in C. elegans ? the millimeter-long roundworm or nematode ? which has a nervous system that serves as a model for those of vertebrate animals, including humans.

Because other Wnt pathways in worms are known to work in humans too, the researchers believe that Wnt genes, the Wnt proteins they produce and so-called "Wnt signaling" also are involved in human learning, memory and forgetting.

"Almost certainly what we have discovered is going on in our brain as well," Maricq says. And because a worm nerve-signal "receptor" in the study is analogous to a human nicotine receptor involved in addiction, schizophrenia and some other mental disorders, some of the genes identified in the worm study "represent possible new targets for treatment of schizophrenia and perhaps addiction," he adds.

Wnt genes and their proteins already were known to "pattern the development and distribution of organs in the body" during embryo development, and to be responsible for various cancers and developmental defects when mutated, he says.

Maricq conducted the study with these Utah biologists: doctoral students Michael Jensen and Dane Maxfield; postdoctoral researchers Michael M. Francis, Frederic Hoerndli and Rui Wang; undergraduate Erica Johnson; Penelope Brockie, a research associate professor; and David M. Madsen, a senior research specialist. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.

Synapse Plasticity is the Basis of Learning and Memory

Synapses are the connections between nerve cells (neurons). Nerve signals are transmitted through synapses. Learning and memory concern how these connections are made, broken, strengthened or weakened. Proteins known as receptors are delivered to the synapses or removed from them to strengthen or weaken the connection.

In the new study, Maricq and colleagues identified a "Wnt signaling pathway" ? a series of genes and the proteins they produce ? that controls the strength of nerve signal transmission from one neuron through a synapse to the next neuron. This allows "plasticity" of synapses ? a key factor in learning, retaining memories and forgetting.

"The adult nervous system is not a stagnant tissue, but rather dynamic and plastic, with the strength of synapses ? specialized neuron-to-neuron connections ? changing with experience, learning and memory," Maricq says. "It's not a fixed thing, like when you're done making the heart, you're done."

When synapses and thus incoming nerve signals are strengthened by adding receptors, an organism learns and remembers; when the opposite occurs, the organism forgets, he adds.

How is that connection strengthened or weakened? When one neuron sends a nerve signal to another neuron, the first neuron releases a chemical known as a neurotransmitter, which moves through the synapse connecting the two cells and attaches or binds to receptors on the surface of the second neuron.

"You can think of the receptors like amplifiers, like hearing aids," Maricq says.

The volume of the received nerve signal depends on the number of receptors, which are stored in a supply depot just below the nerve cell's surface.

The Wnt signaling identified in the new study "tells the depot to put more receptors into the synapse ? or not," says Maricq.

He emphasizes that the Wnt chemical signal is different than the actual nerve signal carried by a neurotransmitter chemical, which in the new study was acetylcholine. The Wnt signal "is a secondary signal that controls the volume of the neurotransmitter signal," Maricq says.

Worms Reveal Details of Nerve Signal Volume Control

By crippling various genes in the worms, the researchers identified the "signaling pathway" by which a Wnt protein in one nerve cell sends a chemical signal to another cell telling it to increase the number of receptors on its surface, thus increasing the strength or volume of nerve signals between the cells.

The type of nerve-signal receptor in the study is an acetylcholine receptor named ACR-16. When researchers crippled the gene that makes the ACR-16 receptor protein, there were not enough receptors, so nerve signals were disrupted and the worms "had uncoordinated movement," Maricq says. "They were semi-paralyzed."

The scientists found mutations of other genes that also resulted in inadequate ACR-16 receptors and impaired the worms' movement. They discovered such genes belong to the "Wnt signaling pathway" that puts enough receptors on the cell surface so signals can be received.

Besides ACR-16, genes in that pathway produced proteins named CWN-2 ? which is a Wnt protein ? LIN-17, CAM-1 and DSH-1.

Here is how that pathway controls the volume of incoming nerve signals:

  • A neuron releases CWN-2, which binds onto a receptor protein on the signal-receiving cell. That protein is a newly discovered combination of the LIN-17 and CAM-1 proteins.
  • The LIN-17/CAM-1 protein sends a signal to a protein called disheveled, or DSH-1.
  • "DSH-1 somehow sends the volume-control signal" that dispatches more ACR-16 receptors from depots inside the second neuron to that cell's surface, thus boosting the volume of the received nerve signal, Maricq says.
  • The researchers used a green jellyfish protein to mark the ACR-16 receptors so they were visible under a microscope. When any of the genes in the Wnt signaling pathway were mutant, the scientists could see the green-labeled receptors accumulate under the surfaces of nerve cells instead of moving to the surface.

Another experiment recorded electrical currents in worm nerve synapses and found it was smaller when any of the Wnt pathway genes were mutated. The smaller current ? reflecting impaired nerve-signal transmission ? explains why the mutant worms were partially paralyzed.

Human Version of Worm Receptor Tied to Mental Disorders

The ACR-16 acetylcholine receptor is the worm version of the alpha-7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in humans and other vertebrates. Both are similar in structure and function in animals from worms to fruit flies, mice and people.

The alpha-7 receptor "is important in schizophrenia and a number of different mental disorders, and may have a role in addiction, but we don't understand how it's regulated," Maricq says.

Many existing psychiatric drugs modify synapse strength. The new study suggests research should be done to show if the same Wnt signaling genes in worms also control alpha-7 receptor levels on human brain cells. If so, new drugs might be developed to target those genes as a way to treat mental disorders, including addiction.

"Addiction is like learning at a primitive level," Maricq says. "Addiction means that somewhere in your brain, synapses are too strong. So you want more."

Dueling Diary: CM Punk and Chris Jericho, Day 3

Chris Jericho’s first morning in Miami is spent in front of a total of no less than 25 different cameras STEP AND REPEAT, 9:13 a.m.
Chris Jericho?s first morning in Miami is spent in front of a total of no less than 25 different cameras within less than an hour. Hosts and journalists from around the globe, from international networks like n-tv Germany, FX Korea and Eurosport, open up televised segments in mixed languages, then engage in casual English conversation with Jericho.

WrestleMania is the topic for the ?step and repeat? setup at this media event but Jericho is sure to keep it entertaining, weaving in discussion about his roots in similar nations where wrestling is adored, where he is adulated. When addressing Japanese and German audiences, Jericho speaks about places he once called home and expresses his ties with such countries, not to mention his enthusiasm for his next return. ?It?s all part of my legacy, part of my history,? The ?Ayatollah of Rock ?n? Rollah? proudly explains.

After wrapping up his last interview, the lead singer of Fozzy has his attention is snared by a beacon ahead on the floor of WrestleMania Axxess.DRAGON BIRTHS LION, 9:34 a.m.
After wrapping up his last interview, the lead singer of Fozzy has his attention snared by a beacon ahead on the floor of WrestleMania Axxess. Jericho enters a Show of Shows exhibition where classic attire and other relics rest on display, telling tales of 27 previous iterations of WWE?s greatest annual spectacle.

A moth-to-flame metaphor is appropriate in this instance as Jericho is drawn to the hanging costume of a ?Dragon,? specifically, Ricky Steamboat. Jericho examines the ornate reptilian garb worn by Steamboat, the WWE Hall of Famer who was the original inspiration for Y2J?s ring mastery. The mat classic at WrestleMania III between Steamboat and Randy Savage is often celebrated by many of WWE?s top performers and the first-ever Undisputed Champion admits that the feats of The Dragon (who Jericho himself had faced at The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania) encouraged him to break through.

?That?s the match that really inspired me to get into wrestling,? Jericho proclaims. ?I saw that match and thought, ?I want to try to do this somehow.? WrestleMania X was also special to me because I was already in the business at the time and I saw my favorites [Owen Hart, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels] have amazing matches that night.?

He continues, ?These guys weren?t all 6-foot-8, 350 pounds. I was no longer intimidated by the size factor.?

?People were always telling me I wasn?t big enough, I wasn?t tall enough, I wasn?t this, I wasn?t that. Then I realized that I was,? he adds, affirming that witnessing Steamboat?s successes fueled his persistence.?

The matter of your brain

Sumit Paul-Choudhury, editor

1st-pic-imageserv.jpgMy Soul, 2005, Katharine Dowson (Image: Image courtesy of the artist and GV Art)

LOOKING at your own brain is a humbling and slightly unnerving experience. Mine, depicted in a freshly acquired MRI scan, is startlingly intricate, compact - and baffling. This is as much of a portrait of my own mind as I am ever likely to see. But to my ignorant eyes (which, by way of an eerie bonus, are now looking at their own cross-sections) it looks pretty much like any other brain.

Apparently a more expert eye wouldn't help. "Whilst all my participants get very excited about seeing their brain for the first time after being scanned, and I frequently get asked 'What can you tell me about my brain?', the reality is that the brain will for a long time yet remain a mysterious mass," says the neuroscientist who scanned my brain, for research purposes. "We must be content with knowing that the 'I' is constructed in its intricacies, but we cannot explain how.?

The hope of closing the gap between the physical and mental is presumably what gets neuroscientists up in the morning, but it?s frustrating for a layperson like me. Avowed materialist though I am, I nonetheless rebel against the knowledge that the impassive blob on screen is "me".

This cognitive dissonance was what I took with me to the opening of Brains, a new show at London?s Wellcome Collection, whose subtitle, "The Mind as Matter", suggests that its curators sympathise with my materialist perspective. ?The neurosciences hold out the prospect of an objective account of consciousness - the soul or mind as nothing more than intricately connected flesh,? reads the introduction. But the bulk of the exhibition is dedicated to whole brains, brain collectors and anatomical paraphernalia, with little explicit reference to the brain?s fine structure, or how it might give rise to thought.

This remit is less restrictive than it might sound. Evolution has seen to it that the most vital of our bodily organs is well guarded against intrusion, and as a by-product, well hidden from inspection. Even today, only a small minority of the population have seen their own brains - and many (unlike me, thankfully) have done so only when they had reason to be fearful of what they found.

So the history of attempts to access, visualise and understand the brain is a rich one. But it?s also well worn, and some of the historical material - elaborate anatomical models, kooky phrenological busts and grim-looking surgical implements - is over-familiar. The scientific objects are more compelling, albeit they also tend to the grotesque - from the arachnid contraptions used to measure skull size to the spools of finely-sliced mouse-brains on tape.

Much of the fascination lies not in the objects themselves, but in the human stories behind them, told in captions whose straight-facedness sometimes comes across as drollery or clinical detachment. Trepanning tools fashioned from flint and animal teeth ?would have taken longer to cut through the skull that more modern instruments?, one informs us drily; the American Anthropometric Society was ?basically a club to enable the leading men of US science to dissect each other,? says another.

Secluded in the skull, individual brains develop relatively few distinguishing features save those given them by trauma, disease or rare accidents of birth. So brains of note tend to be associated with tales of misfortune. That?s often the case with anatomical specimens, but what?s remarkable about the brains on display here is how much they overlap with criminality. Some of the most striking have been acquired from people whose wickedness in life was deemed sufficient reason to deny them dignity in death. In other cases, the moral equation is reversed, with collectors stepping outside the bounds of decency in their desire to possess the brain; the abhorrent nadir being reached with the probable murder of "feeble" children by Nazi doctors.

2nd-pic-imageserv.jpg(Image: Science Museum, London)

The collection?s examples of brains being voluntarily donated are equally remarkable. Persuading someone to donate this most personal organ is a tough sell, and the historical portion of the exhibition makes much of how appeals to ego have persuaded the great and good to offer up their brains for study. More recently, donation for medical study has provided motivation for would-be donors. Particularly poignant is the tale of Anita Newcomb McGee, a female US army surgeon who gave up her nine-month old son?s brain, along with a photograph and a sketch of his head, with the words ?I want him to benefit the world in some way if possible.?

But this altruism is tempered by the fact that brains, unlike many of our other ?charismatic organs?, cannot conceivably be transplanted. The knowledge that someone else might gain life from my gifted heart is a powerful incentive to donate, but I have less incentive to be generous with my brain - though it would seem that distinction is not made by those who do donate. Perhaps reluctant donors might be won over by the moving photos compiled by artist Ania Dabrowska and social scientist Bronwyn Parry of cheerful would-be donors ranging from an ex-soldier to a headmistress.

And one of the exhibition?s stand-out exhibits might provide further reassurance: a documentary video of anatomists at London's Hammersmith Hospital painstakingly and precisely slicing donated brains into half-centimetre wedges in near-silence. Or perhaps not. This is well sanctioned, respectful science being conducted on freely donated organs for the betterment of human health and knowledge; and yet it nonetheless provokes one of my fellow spectators into muttering, very much to herself: "Wrong, wrong, wrong". For myself, I find the video one of the most compelling exhibits -- perhaps the only one that prompts me to contemplate offering myself up for more than a non-invasive scan in the service of medical science.

Less clear-cut, for me, are the nearby sections of Einstein's brain, preserved under deeply dubious circumstances after his death. Clearly, there's a certain fascination associated with perhaps the most famous brain there ever was; but Einstein's brain is no more legible than any other, and the slim prospect that scientific insights can be gleaned from its study seems poor recompense for the undignified proxying of a great mind by illicitly-obtained fragments of tissue.

3rd-pic-imageserv.jpg(Image: Wellcome Library, London. Wellcome Images)

The final insult: an accompanying 3D-printed replica of the entire organ, reconstructed for a TV documentary from archive photographs. This absurd resin relic epitomises, for me, the extent to which the objects on display at the Wellcome are imbued with significance by the knowledge that they were once the seats of consciousness. It?s the minds of the audience, rather than the brains on display, that are doing the work.

The Wellcome show confronts its visitors with the gulf between our hard-won knowledge about the form of the brain and our as-yet-meagre understanding of its function, much as my scan did to me. It didn?t narrow the gap between the grey image of my brain and my sense of self; if anything, it widened it. But it did make me appreciate what an amazing gap it is, and marvel anew at the work of those who are seeking to close it.

Brains: The mind as matter is showing at the Wellcome Collection in London until 17 June.

Follow your credit rating. You have the option to receive a free copy of your credit report, and many ways to keep tabs on it throughout the year for free. You should check it at least two times a year to make sure that nothing unauthorized has gotten onto your report and that there are no signs of identity theft.

Be suspicious of a credit repair company that guarantees that they will be 100% successful in restoring your perfect credit. A lot of agencies will make general claims about their capability in repairing your history. This is not at all accurate since what is affecting your credit is not the same as another individual with credit issues. Do not believe anyone who advertises miracles.

Racing's Best Top Jockeys - Don't Forget Mike Smith

Mike Smith is certainly one of the very best jockeys in the United States horse racing scene today, but a look back at his career suggests clearly that he is one of the best jockeys of all time, not of just this time. ?When it's all said and done, his name will go down with the other all-time greats from his and other eras. ?Men like Eddie Arcaro, Willie Shoemaker, Laftit Pincay, Jr., Gary Stevens, Jerry Bailey, Kent Desormeaux, and Garrett Gomez are all great, but Mike Smith is right up there with all of them. ?He takes a back seat to nobody. ?Not even forty-seven years old, Smith is moving toward the career milestone of 5,000 career victories, and barring injury will reach that mark sometime in 2012. ?He was already a Hall-of-Famer before 5,000 wins even came up on his horizon, but reaching 5,000 wins this year will serve as the icing on an already fabulous career cake. ?

When looking at Smith's career, there is seemingly nothing he hasn't done, except ride a Triple Crown winner. ?But he has more than made up for that by doing virtually everything else a jockey can do in the sport of horse racing. ?What? ?You want to know what major races he has won in his career? ?Really, the correct question is what race HASN'T Smith won. ?How about awards? ?Smith has won them all. ?Hall of Fame? ?Already named in 2003. ?How many great horses has Smith ridden and ridden to victory. ?Too many to count is the right answer, but let first start by saying that Mike Smith has ridden TWO horses that won the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year. ?TWO!!! ?Do you know how many jockeys out there that would give their right arm in a second for the chance to ride a Horse of the Year winner? ?All of them.

Smith rode Holy Bull in all of 1994, guiding that horse to a splendid campaign in which he was so great that he skipped the Breeders' Cup and still won Horse of the Year in a landslide vote. ?For his work that year, Smith was honored with his own Eclipse Award for Most Outstanding Jockey, a title he also won the previous year, as well as the Venezia Memorial Award. ?He also won an ESPY in 1993 as the top jockey. ?In 2000, Smith won the Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, and also claimed the Big Sport of Turfdom Award in both 2009 and 2010. ?In 2009 Smith helped guide Zenyatta to a stirring come-from-dead-last, not-just-behind victory.

The list of major stakes races that Smith has won in his career is too long to cover race by race. ?His first major win came in the 1990 Manhattan Handicap, and within three years of that win, Smith was literally on top of the racing world. ?He's won all the major Kentucky Derby prep races, like the Santa Anita Derby, the Wood Memorial, and the Florida Derby, just to name a few. ?He had not won the Kentucky Derby yet when, in 2005, he rode a 50 to 1 shot by the name of Giacomo. ?He had already won the Preakness in 1993, so to win the Derby in such dramatic fashion was a real reward. ?Smith then went to Belmont Park in Elmont, in 2010 and won the Belmont Stakeks,. which meant that, in addition to all his other accomplishments, he had won each of the 3 Triple Crown races.

The most notable race of Smith's career came in 2009 when the amazing mare Zenyatta took on the boys in the Breeders' Cup Classic. ?Smith let Zenyatta drop way back at first. ?Then, when Zenyatta started moving on the turn, Smith expertly prepared Zenyatta for any opening. ?Smith found it, asked the big mare to go where he asked, and she responded, becoming the first femae in history to win the Breeders' Cup Classic. ?Mike Smith will go down in history as one of the all-time greats.

Exposed Skin Care Reviews

There are lots of hair removal methods used by everyone in all ages. But before having a hair removal, you should also know if your skin or hair is safe when you use one of those methods. Whatever method you will choose, it will surely help you have a smooth skin that you can flaunt all day long.

Be sure to read the remainder of this article. Whether you want to brush up on your general skin care knowledge or you want to determine if the subject of exposed skin care reviews is worth your time, you?re sure to find the information here to be beneficial. Who knows? The free tips listed here may be just what you need to revolutionize your skin care routine.

For dry skin are not recommended steam baths. Masks for dry skin have softening, moisturizing, toning and nourishing action. They include egg yolk, vegetable oil, sour cream, cream, honey, fresh vegetables and fruit, extracts of medicinal herbs. Masks for dry skin are advised to make 2 times a week.

Sometimes it?s best to keep everything to yourself. No matter how much it hurts you, because you yourself could understand and re-motivate yourself back! sunblock prevents many other skin diseases caused by harmful ultraviolet rays. Age spots are most prominent in areas around your hands. So, remember to apply sunblock regularly in these areas.

Drink plenty of water. Green/herbal tea is also good. Try to drink at least eight glasses of fluids every day! Water hydrates the skin and keeps it free of toxin and improves the elasticity of the skin, making it glow. Avoid sugary soft drinks, coffee and alcohol. They do more harm than good to your skin.

Washing skin is the most basic way of caring for it. Shower or bathe daily to clean and hydrate skin. Limit bathing to 10 minutes, as more time starts to dry out the skin. As the Skin Care Physicians site points out, hot water strips the skin of moisturizing oils, so use warm water. Use a mild, moisturizing soap; those with deodorants, fragrances or alcohol dry out the skin. Closing the door while showering seals in humidity for more hydration. Gently pat skin dry to avoid irritation and loss of moisture.

Natural skin care products are highly cost effective and worth. They are not very expensive to afford. You can easily find these products on any of your nearby cosmetics shops or from online stores. However, before choosing your natural skin products, it is advisable to undertake proper research about the available products and services for security and health related purposes.

Healthy foods refer to those that help your skin and body fight against the bad forces outside and inside. You must consider antioxidants such as vitamin A, C and E as they are highly beneficial for sun damaged skin and fight certain cancers, including skin cancer. Along with a healthy diet consider a multivitamin that meets the RDA standards.

Some individuals should exercise extreme caution when exposed to the sun, including those with very fair skin, those who burn often or tan poorly, those who have many freckles or moles, those under age 16, and those who have a history of skin cancer themselves or in the family history.

Cleanser contains oil, water and a wetting agent called surfactants. Oiland surfactants are beneficial in removing dirt and oil from your skin and water then flushes it out, leaving your skin clean and shiny. Try to use soap free cleansers with the best lukewarm water for cleansing bu avoid over cleansing for your good.
