Intel To Kick Off Mobile Push with Windows 8 Tablets and Hybrid Devices

Chip maker Intel hopes to get into mobile devices in a big way Thursday as the company unveils the 1.8GHz dual-core Atom Z2760, the first chip from Intel's Clover Trail family. The new chip is designed specifically for Windows 8 tablets and hybrid devices as the company tries to compete with ARM-based chips that currently dominate the smartphone and tablet world.

Intel says Clover Trail boasts a number of key updates to its Atom platform: longer battery life; smaller die packaging (allowing for thinner and lighter devices); hardware acceleration for displaying higher-definition images; and 4G LTE network support. The new chip will be officially unveiled during a special Windows 8-themed event in San Francisco Thursday with numerous major PC manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and ZTE (check back later for PCWorld's event coverage).

What Will Battery Life Be Like Under Clover Trail?

The first big claim Intel is making for the 1.8GHz Atom Z2760 is that it can provide up to 10 hours of battery life for local (non-Web based) high-definition video playback, and up to three weeks of standby time. Intel's previous Atom chips were often criticized for offering poor battery life performance, which is one reason why ARM-based chips have been the preferred choice for mobile device manufacturers.

For Clover Trail, Intel has focused on improving power management, but it's too early to tell just how good it will be in the new platform. Nonetheless, if Intel wants to compete in a mobile market where battery life is critical, it will have to nail down power efficiency to have any chance of relevancy.

Clover Trail's Other Features

The new chip will also include NFC support, the ability to support mobile device cameras with a maximum 8-megapixel sensor, and integrated graphics with hardware acceleration support for 1080p video. The Z2760 can also support an internal and external display at the same time, and supports Internet connections over Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G LTE networks.

Intel is also saying the new Atom chip can allow manufacturers to create devices that are as thin as 0.33 inches and as light as 1.5 pounds. That's a little bit thinner and heavier than what Apple offers with its Wi-fi/Cellular iPad that features a depth of 0.37-inches and a weight around 1.46 pounds.

Intel vs Arm on Windows

For the new Windows 8 ecosystem, there will actually be two flavors of the OS to choose from: Windows 8 and Windows RT. Windows 8 will appear in any device running an x86-based processor. Windows RT, meanwhile, is the OS version for ARM-based tablets that rely on the new touch-friendly Windows 8 UI (formerly known as Metro). Windows RT will still include a traditional desktop interface option, but it will be buried in the OS, and it won't be able to run legacy third-party apps such as Photoshop or browsers like Mozilla Firefox. To alleviate this pain point, Microsoft says Windows RT will offer a free version of Office as well as Internet Explorer for accessing the Web.

As for Windows 8 tablets running on Intel silicon, they'll theoretically offer full compatibility with Windows legacy technology, including current desktop applications, and peripherals such as printers and cameras. These could be handy advantages if you want them, but it's not clear if people are clamoring to use Quicken on a tiny touchscreen, or print directly from their tablets.

Clover Trail Hardware Options

Intel's event will include presentations from major PC manufacturers so we should get more details later. But the company in June said 20 Windows 8 tablets with Clover Trail chips were already in the works. Some tablets and laptop convertibles set to run Clover Trail chips have already been announced including the Hewlett-Packard Envy X2, Samsung Ativ Smart PC, and Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2.

Clover Trail Device Pricing

The key to a successful push into mobile devices will be the cost of Clover Trail-powered Windows 8 laptops and hybrids. Few prices have been announced for upcoming Clover Trail devices, but costs are expected to range anywhere from $700 to $1000 and up. That's definitely more expensive than the $500 price tag of a base model iPad. But Intel-powered tablets should offer more PC-like capabilities than Apple's tablet, and this should appeal to anyone looking to get real work done on a touchscreen device.

Indian government tells carriers to end 3G roaming pacts, doesn't stop to explain why

India planning fresh 2G spectrum auctions for November 12th

For those of us on the outside, India's telecommunications setup can seem a little murky. While the country has 900 million mobile connections, for example, there hasn't been a valid 2G license in operation since February. Now, authorities are asking 3G carriers to suspend the practice of allowing customers to switch between different operators as they roam across the country's 22 wireless regions -- with no explanation as to why. Roaming was originally outlawed back in December, but a number of networks appealed -- a move which only seems to have postponed the final ruling until today.

Claes Johnson on Mathematics and Science: Why My Book is ...

My ebook BodyandSoul Mathematical Simulation Technology (MST)?is banned by KTH: No link to the book is allowed on any website controled by KTH.

If you want to know why KTH exercises this oppression of free speech, the most holy principle of both science and democracy, you will find the answer in the following TED talk by Conrad Wolfram:

What Wolfram says is precisely what MST says:?

  • We've got a real problem with math education today.
  • I believe that computers correctly used is the silver bullet that can make math education work.
  • Computer-based math: Critical reform.
  • The country that does it first will leap-frog others.
  • This is not an incremental sort of change.
  • I want to see a completely renewed changed math curriculum built form the ground up based on computers...
  • I am not even sure we should brand the subject as math.
  • What I am sure is that it is the main-stream subject of the future.

Raissman: Growing pains for NFL Network

The following is not a blanket indictment of the NFL Network. But thanks to Time Warner Cable, our local cable monopolist that finally caved to Roger Goodell, a new set of targets are now in sight.

Rich Eisen, NFLN?s frontman is an engaging guy. He?s got a lot of gameshow host in him too. During Thursday?s pregame leading into Browns-Ravens, Eisen said Baltimore having to play Sunday night then return to play Thursday night was a tough situation.

Who created this mess? Eisen did not address that. If Eisen was for real, he would have somehow ? even subtly ? explained how NFL owners, for the benefit of NFLN and their bank accounts, added five games to its ?Thursday Night Football? schedule creating a hardship for participating teams and severely compromising the on-field product.

Instead, he treated viewers like morons. An honest explanation was not a high priority for Eisen.

Still he didn?t come off nearly as clueless as Michelle Beisner, an NFLN reporter who was in Seattle for the controversial finish of Packers-Seahawks. After the game she interviewed Pete Carroll on the field, but never ? no never ? asked one question about the way the game ended. Or the replacement officials call that gift wrapped his illegitimate win.

Instead, Beisner asked the following crucial questions: 1)?Coach, congratulations. What an unbelievable victory and finish. What do you have to say about this team right now?? 2)?Your defense, eight sacks in the first half. Talk about what your defense was able to accomplish tonight?? 3)?And how do you feel your young quarterback (Russell Wilson) handled the bright lights of Monday night football tonight??

This was embarrassing. Doubt NFLN suits will be running Beisner?s one-on-one in their best interviews of 2012 segment. Beisner shouldn?t take a solo hit here. Whoever was producing this segment should have been in her ear screaming: ?Ask him about the play.?

Bet Steve Mariucci would have. Unfortunately, if you haven?t played in the NFL you might not understand what he?s saying. Mariucci, one of NFLN?s marquee personalities, often sounds like he?s sending in plays to a QB. Not only is he too technical, he appears to be reading from notes. Someone at NFLN should remind him about the virtues of spontaneity.

Mariucci is not nearly as technical as NFLN game analyst Mike Mayock, who sounds like he?s in a film session with coaches rather than broadcasting to the unwashed masses.

Still, for us, NFLN is well worth watching. The reasons should be obvious.

ESPN BOOKING ISIAH?
There?s a lot of NBA stuff going on at ESPN, as the Bristol Clown Community College faculty searches for new talent. Reports had Isiah Thomas auditioning (he was in Bristol Wednesday) and, according to NBA stoolies, Mike D?Antoni also took a shot at a gig.

The Thomas stuff is interesting. Are ESPN honchos looking to pair Zeke with Magic Johnson, his long-time nemeis, in ABC?s NBA studio? The matchup could produce major sparks, something the sleep inducing show desperately needs.

And if Thomas were to get the gig, how close would he be tracking the Knicks and James (Guitar Jimmy) Dolan?
?

FORGET-ME-YES
These multi-media former quarterbacks should keep better track of what they are saying or risk being accused of flip-flopping.

Like Rich Gannon. On Sunday?s Jets-Dolphins CBS telecast he said: ?I don?t want to hear Jets fans blaming (Mark) Sanchez. It?s on his receivers. They can?t get open.?

Yet a day later on CBS Sports Network?s ?NFL Monday QB? Gannon said he ?doesn?t believe? in Sanchez.
The dude is confused. Or just forgot what he said Sunday.

INSIDE THE SNOOZE
Leave it to Cris Collinsworth to add a bizarre twist to the replacement referee mess.

Under the unwatchful eye of the replacements, Collinsworth said, the NFL returned to its rock-em-sock-em days. ?Nobody can tell me these games haven?t been more physical. It?s like going back to the ?60s or ?70s kind of football,? Collinsworth said on Showtime?s ?Inside the NFL.? ?And you?ve got the Kardashians refereeing.?

Maybe Collinsworth can get a Kardashian to be a guest panelist on ?Inside the NFL.? In that department, the show is now 0-for-3. Though Kris Jenkins, the latest chair warmer, would put on a show, but he wasn?t his feisty self. Clearly the Showtime/CBS brainiacs need some advice.

Bring in Tony Siragusa to mix it up. With this guy running his mouth, no one will fall asleep after the first half hour of what used to be a thrill-a-minute show.

NAME THAT MAN!
John (Pa Pinstripe) Sterling must have wanted to keep it a big secret. Tuesday night (Yankees-Twins) Suzyn (Ma Pinstripe) Waldman had the night off and another voice was yakking with him.

Joined the game in progress and had no idea who the guy was. Sterling didn?t identify the dude. He kept it a secret. Like he does with the score. The only way we found out the mystery guest was Jeff Nelson was by reading about it on Twitter.

ANDARIESE OUT

MSG moles say John Andariese, the veteran Knicks voice, will not return to the radio booth this season. ... His role of keeper of ?the media elite? has brought a new dimension to SNY?s Cris Carlin. On a recent edition of ?Loud Mouths? CC gave a thumbs up to Ramses Barden adding: ?And I?m not one of those Giants beat writers who fell in love with him three years ago.? What Carlin meant to say was these particular Giants beat writers will never be part of ?the media elite.? ... When Keith Hernandez shaved off his mustache it brought a $10,000 donation to the Jacquelyn Hernandez Adult Day Health Center in Brooklyn. The facility is named after his mom and assists Alzheimer patients.

DUDE OF THE WEEK
NICK BUONICONTI
For his devotion to finding a cure for paralysis. His son Marc?s life-changing spinal chord injury, sustained while making a tackle playing for The Citadel occurred in 1985, but Buoniconti?s commitment has only grown. One look into the Hall of Famer?s eye and you realize the extent of the love he has for his son. Last Monday, millions were raised for the Miami Project research fund at the 27th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner in NYC. The annual event has raised nearly $93 million overall.

DWEEB OF THE WEEK
ROGER GOODELL

For allowing the owners to strong-arm him into locking out the officials for four months in order to save a few bucks. The sheriff is skilled at keeping law and order in a league populated by thugs and creeps, but he ain?t that tough. After the Monday night fiasco in Seattle, Goodell went into hiding, refusing to face the music. The sheriff shouldn?t worry though, his media valets (the ones whose constant rap was ?he works for the owners?) will always be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Oh, what a lucky man.

DOUBLE TALK
What Roger Goodell said (about call ending Green Bay-Seattle game): ?....That?s the beauty of sports and the beauty of officiating. There are controversial calls and people see them differently. I understand that. That?s the beauty of sports.?

What Roger Goodell meant to say: ?Jerry Jones handed me that ?beauty? line. The replacements got the call wrong. The Packers got jobbed. The deal got done because of it.?

Zamzee: Activity Monitor And Interactive Gaming Site Boost Physical ...

Who knew a digital game could motivate kids to exercise?

A new study sponsored by the nonprofit HopeLab and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows that kids who use an activity meter called a Zamzee and its corresponding game website over six months are 59 percent more active than those who don't.

The Zamzee, created by HopeLab, is a small device that works by monitoring movement and physical activity. That exercise information is then loaded onto a corresponding game website, where kids can go on to see how much they moved and earn points and rewards. (For more information about Zamzee, click here.)

"This study shows that technology is not just part of the problem; it can also be part of the solution in helping kids be more physically active," Steve Cole, Ph.D., the Vice President of Research and Development at HopeLab and a professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in a statement.

The study, presented at the 2012 Obesity Society Annual Meeting, included 448 kids of middle-school age around the United States. Half of them were assigned to use the Zamzee and the corresponding game website for six months, while the other half used just the Zamzee but didn't have access to the website.

Researchers found that the kids who used the Zamzee and the website completed 59 percent more exercise each week than those who didn't have access to the motivational gaming website. Specifically, those who used Zamzee and the website exercised about 118 minutes each week, while those who just used the Zamzee exercised about 74 minutes each week, Scientific American reported.

Plus, kids who were overweight exercised 27 percent more and girls exercised 103 percent more when they used the Zamzee and the website, researchers found.

All of this extra exercise translated into actual effects on the body, too -- use of the Zamzee was linked with decreases in "bad" LDL cholesterol levels in the kids, as well as better blood sugar control, the researchers found.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, kids should be getting at least an hour of aerobic exercise (like running) every day, as well as at least three days a week of muscle-strengthening exercises (like push-ups) and bone-strengthening exercises (like jumprope).

  • Jump Rope

Constantly on the go? "Stick it in your bag," says Patel. "It's something you can do anywhere you are." A solo jump-rope workout, like this <a href="http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/workout/arms/express/jump-rope-workouts/" target="_hplink">10-minute sculpting routine</a> from <em>Fitness</em> magazine, can burn over 100 calories, and tone the shoulders, chest arms and legs. Some gyms even offer <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jordan-turgeon/jump-rope-workout_b_1235545.html" target="_hplink">jump-rope fitness classes</a>. Or, if a less structured jump sounds more like your thing, grab some friends for some Double Dutch. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/adwriter/5826718940/" target="_hplink">adwriter</a></em>

  • Hula Hoop

While she's recently taken to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/12/michelle-obama-jumping-jacks-world-record_n_1143016.html" target="_hplink">jumping jacks</a>, First Lady Michelle Obama is a big proponent of hula hooping as a fun way to get active. In 2009, she <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/22/best-michelle-obama-photo_n_328933.html" target="_hplink">performed 142 "swivels"</a> before dropping her hoop at a healthy kids fair at the White House, the AP reported. But it's not just for kids! And now, with weighted hoops, hula hooping can produce even more dramatic results. It <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/19/weight-loss-success-jen-moore_n_1341791.html" target="_hplink">helped Jen Moore lose 140 pounds</a>. "It's something you can do in front of the TV," says Patel, "rain or shine!" <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/stringberd/929274139/" target="_hplink">stringberd</a></em>

  • Play On The Playground

"You may be surprised how much you actually <a href="http://www.seventeen.com/health/tips/outdoor-workout-ideas" target="_hplink">work your arms and abs while on the swings</a>," National Academy of Sports Medicine instructor Rick Richey told Seventeen.com. You'll work leg muscles climbing the stairs up to the slide and arms and abs from swinging from the monkey bars, he added. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/colorblindpicaso/2540688582/" target="_hplink">colorblindPICASO</a></em>

  • Dance

There's a reason so many celebs have <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/25/dancing-with-the-stars-gladys-knight_n_1452199.html" target="_hplink">slimmed down during stints on reality TV show "Dancing With The Stars."</a> Dancing is a serious cardio workout -- but can feel more like a party. "Dance, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to get in shape, as you're working multiple muscle groups all at the same time that in turn keeps your body constantly challenged," fitness expert <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/09/dancing-with-the-stars-health-weight-loss_n_1411588.html" target="_hplink">Tracey Mallett told HuffPost in April</a>. <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/12/first-zumba-class_n_1418895.html" target="_hplink">Try a class like Zumba</a>, or burn calories more surreptitiously with salsa lessons or a night on the town! <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/audihertz/6022929764/" target="_hplink">John Bollwitt</a></em>

  • Skate

Ice skating, one of our <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/03/winter-workouts_n_1125504.html" target="_hplink">favorite winter workouts</a>, can burn up to 500 calories an hour. Inline skating can burn over <a href="http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20420506_2,00.html" target="_hplink">400 calories in just 30 minutes</a>, according to Health.com, thanks to the side-to-side movement in your lower body, plus the way your core engages to keep you balanced. You'll also seriously work the smaller <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/28/winter-fitness-outside-seasonal-sports_n_1171917.html#s577032&title=6_Ice_Skating" target="_hplink">lower-body muscles</a> that play key roles in keeping you upright. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/kcolwell/2433110916/" target="_hplink">kcolwell</a></em>

  • Skip-It

Who can forget this classic '80s fitness fad? The ankle hoop counted rotations as the user swung the attached ball around and around and around. <em>TIME</em> named the Skip-It one of the <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2049243_2048660_2049212,00.html" target="_hplink">100 greatest toys of all time</a>. Not only is it a cardio workout similar to jump-roping, you'll also engage the core and lower-body muscles used for balance. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/zingersb/161779921/" target="_hplink">zingersb</a></em>

  • Hopscotch

Think outside the sidewalk-chalk box! You can mix up traditional hopscotch jumps by moving side to side as if hitting each corner of a square, as shown in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFJpIjYfydw" target="_hplink">this Exercise.com video</a> or by focusing on <a href="http://fitbie.msn.com/exercise/hopscotch-men" target="_hplink">balancing on one foot</a>, according to FitBie. Think of hopscotch as essentially a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/23/plyometrics-workout_n_1399766.html" target="_hplink">plyometrics workout</a>, which has been shown to <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12627298?ordinalpos=1&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum" target="_hplink">improve running performance</a>. You can even hop <a href="http://mizfitonline.com/2010/12/15/five-reasons-you-need-to-hopscotch/" target="_hplink">indoors with masking tape</a>, suggests popular fitness blogger MizFit. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bkoger/4791448741/" target="_hplink">Brandon Koger</a></em>

  • Pogo Stick

While it will undoubtedly take some practice to work up to 10 minutes of jumping on a pogo stick at a time, it can be a fun cardio workout, burning <a href="http://www.thatsfit.com/2009/12/02/pogosticking-for-weightloss/ " target="_hplink">20 to 40 calories in those 10 minutes</a>. Pogo stick company Vurtego claims celebrity fans such as <a href="http://thearcmagazine.com/play/0908/" target="_hplink">Matthew McConaughey and Allison Hannigan</a>. Just make sure to practice on a flat, open area and consider wearing some protective gear in case there are tumbles! <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seandreilinger/4819534221/" target="_hplink">sean dreilinger</a></em>

  • Moon Shoes

The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaMY8XakxQ8" target="_hplink">"anti-gravity" shoes</a> popular in the '80s just may be the precursor to today's <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/12/kangoo-jumps-mario-godiva-green_n_924580.html" target="_hplink">Kangoo Jumps</a>, running boots of a sort with springs on the soles, used in classes at various gyms and by solo adventurous fitness fans. But that bounce isn't only playful, it's also an easier workout on your joints than running or jumping. Kangoo Jumps <a href="http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/health&id=7497802" target="_hplink">absorb up to 80 percent of the shock</a>, Beth Kruper, a Kangoo Jumps rep, told ABC. And they may up the calorie burn, too. "When you run in them you're using more muscles than you would in sneakers," Kruper said. "So if you usually burn 100 calories in a mile, you'll burn 130 to 140." <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mamarazzi/6865835105/" target="_hplink">magnificent momma</a></em>

  • Paintball Or Laser Tag

Take group fitness to a competitive level with an outing to a nearby paintball or laser tag arena. While it's tough to estimate <a href="http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/messageboard.asp?imboard=6&imparent=27177758" target="_hplink">the number of calories you'll burn</a>, it'll definitely have you running, jumping, squatting and crawling, all in the name of the game, with some <a href="http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2009/07/paintball_a_workout_and_it_als.html" target="_hplink">bursts of anaerobic sprinting</a> to boot. <br><br> <em>Flickr photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sombraala/2234093021/" target="_hplink">Greg Boege</a></em>

Online Gaming ? A New Industry ? headline news

Many aspects of our lives have been changed by the advent of high speed internet connections and this also includes the way we play games. Till a few years back, those who were interested in computer games could enjoy the same playing all alone or maximum with one more person. The gaming consoles had a limit that permitted just two players at a time to play the same game on the same console. Apart from this, not all games were designed as multiplayer ones. Online gaming is changing all this. Now you can easily pit your gaming skills against millions of other online gamers by logging on to the net. There are many games which you can play for free, though there are many games which have to be purchased before you can play them online. Check out the leading social networks and you will be amazed to see the quality of the games they offer. People form groups by joining hands with others to play such games. Because joining a group increases the overall strength of the individual, hence it is essential.

The more the number of players in your group, the stronger you are. You can also seek help from experienced members of your group to help you complete tasks by borrowing the necessary resources from them. It might sound amazing but in most cases a single group might have people from nearly every country in the world. Though the leading online games are free, they come with certain riders. The player, who wants to complete the game faster than normally possible, can do so by purchasing extra points from the gaming company. Since the gaming companies are spending a huge amount of money to maintain their servers this is not a bad idea. Just imagine 5 million and more people playing the same game at the same time and you will understand the computing power required. Various types of online games are available and they range from those that are meant for teens right down to those that are meant for mature adults. What is being seen today is just the tip of the iceberg. It shall not be long before advanced versions of these games will appear making them more interactive for the players. The masses will soon be experiencing online gaming in a big way. Get some more info on slots jackpot and best casino.

Bev Burgess and Lynda Chambers of The Capiscum Group are well versed in the issues that marketing organizations are facing today. For their latest report, Building an Engine for Growth, they interviewed 40 CEOs, managing directors, profit and loss (P&L) owners, and senior marketing directors to understand how marketing can be a stronger engine for growth in B2B service companies.

In this Viewpoint, Capsicum shares its findings from the research and provides guidance to marketers on how they need to adapt if they are to really deliver value to the business.

Some of the things marketing can do include:

  • Speaking the language of the business, aligning marketing metrics with business key performance indicators (KPIs), and showing the relationship between marketing activities and business results.
  • Engaging directly with clients to gain credibility based on their first-hand knowledge of clients? wants, needs, and buying behavior.

Making sure that marketers who are doing strategic work, such as go-to-market planning, are just as visible across the business, if not more so, than the marketers doing tactical work such as event planning.

Daily Dining News: More Reviews for Pour House (Cowtown Eats ...

IMG_1768

Earlier this month, Sac Bee restaurant critic Blair Anthony Robertson said he loved the bar program at Pour House, but found that its food still needed to find its footing. Now, Sac Mag's Cathy Cassinos-Carr gives her two cents.

Pour House, the new bar and eatery at 19th and Q in midtown (formerly the site of Whiskey Wild), just might have what it takes. Starting with an interior warmed by weathered wood, exposed brick and stunning Edison lights, Pour House is a come-one, come-all type of establishment that strives to please nearly everyone...

The kitchen at Pour House is operated by Coast to Coast Sandwiches, which draws largely from its food truck lineup of comfort foods. My pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries were pleasing enough, but the straightforward fare (salads, sandwiches, burgers), while tasty, doesn?t match up to the ambitious libations quite as well as it could. I have high hopes that Coast to Coast will feel freer to experiment over time to bring diners something unexpected.

Sounds like the verdict is pretty unanimous. I've talked to the guys who run Coast to Coast Sandwiches a few times, and I have confidence that they'll be able to turn their good food into great food.

3 more US banks report possible cyber attacks

23 hrs.

U.S. Bank and PNC reported problems with their customer websites Wednesday after a financial services security group warned about possible cyberattacks.?Meanwhile,?SecurityNewsDaily?reported that on Tuesday,?Wells Fargo may have also?been?the victim of a sophisticated campaign of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

These reports follow last week's attacks, which affected JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America.

U.S. Bank spokesman Tom Joyce told the Associated Press that some customers experienced intermittent delays. He said the bank was working to fix the problem and was working with law enforcement.

A spokesman for PNC, Fred Solomon, told AP its online operations were mostly normal but some customers had trouble accessing PNC.com on their first try. He said the bank was aware of a similar threat for Thursday and was taking precautions.

In all three cases, each bank received hundreds of complaints from users who could not access their sites. Although Chase and?Bank of America?stopped short of declaring that they'd been victims of an attack, security experts and at least one politician made the assertion for them.

The U.S. Bank spokesman told AP that?the issue appeared to be related to problems at the?other banks in the past week.

Last week, the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center, an industry group, raised its cyber threat level to "high" from "elevated" because of potential cyber?attacks.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., told C-SPAN last week he believed Iran was behind the Chase and Bank of America attacks.

National security officials told NBC News?that the continuing bank?cyber attacks last week?were being carried out by the government of Iran. One of those sources said the claim by hackers that the attacks were prompted by the online video, "Innocence of Muslims"???mocking the Prophet Muhammad???was just a cover story.

The attack was described by one source, a former U.S. official familiar with the attacks, to NBC News,?as being "significant and ongoing" and looking to cause "functional and significant damage." Also, one source suggested the attacks were in response to U.S. sanctions on Iranian banks.

But over the?weekend,?Iran denied its hackers were involved in the bank attacks, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.?

The hacking of websites and corporate networks at Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup began in late 2011 and escalated this year, people familiar with the situation told Reuters.

"We officially announce that we haven't had any attacks,"?Gholam Reza Jalali,?head of Iran's civil defense agency, told Fars, when asked about the report.

Dmitri Alperovitch, chief executive officer of security company CrowdStrike, told the?Wall Street Journal?Wednesday that?the "attack" on Wells Fargo was larger than most he's seen.

"The amount of bandwidth?that is flooding the websites is very large, much larger than in other attacks, and in a sense, unprecedented," he told the newspaper.

Novel materials become multifunctional at ultimate quantum limit

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A University of Arkansas physicist and his colleagues have examined the lower limits of novel materials called complex oxides and discovered that unlike conventional semiconductors the materials not only conduct electricity, but also develop unusual magnetic properties.

Jak Chakhalian, Jian Liu, Derek Meyers and Benjamin Gray of the University of Arkansas and John W. Freeland and Phillip Ryan of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory present their ideas in Physical Review Letters.

"Contrary to what we have today in modern microelectronics devices based on silicon, here in a single quantum well, which is just four nanometers thick, we now have several functionalities in one device layer," said Chakhalian, professor of physics and holder of the Charles and Clydene Scharlau Chair in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "Engineers can use this class of material to devise new multifunctional devices based on the electrons' spin."

The microelectronic materials -- semiconductors -- used in today's computers, have almost reached the lower limitation for size and functionality. Computers run on several semiconducting devices layered together in the very smallest of spaces, known as quantum wells, where nanoscale layers of a semiconducting material are sandwiched between two nanoscale layers of a non-conducting material. However, the researchers found that by using complex oxides with correlated electrons confined to quantum well geometry, they added a new dimension to the mix.

The new structure is based on the concept of correlated charge carriers, like those found in rust, or iron oxide. In rust, if one electron does something, all of the other electrons "know" about it. This phenomenon, called correlated electrons, does not exist in silicon-based materials that run today's computers, televisions, complex medical equipment, power cell phones and keep the electricity on in homes.

"In normal materials used today, electrons don't care about the movement of one another," Chakhalian said. "We can predict their properties almost on the 'back of an envelope' with the help of powerful computers." However, with correlated materials, the calculations for the movement of one electron involve tracking the interactions with billions of electrons, and this is beyond modern theory capabilities.

Chakhalian and his colleagues went down to four atomic layers of a correlated complex oxide material based on nickel and sandwiched it in between two layers of non-conducting oxide material based on aluminum. Unlike the semiconducting materials, the complex oxide structure revealed the unexpected presence of both electronic and magnetic properties.

These multiple properties in a single material may allow the semiconductor industry to push the limits of current conventional computers and develop multiple functions for a single device, possibly allowing everyday electronics to become smaller and faster than they are today.

Chakhalian is a professor in the Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering.

Venezuelan challenger edges closer to Chavez, but close enough?

With elections only days away in Venezuela, opposition candidate, Henrique Capriles, has gained ground in an opinion poll, though he still lags behind President Hugo Chavez.

Recent Datanalisis' polls show support for Capriles, a 40-year-old state governor, growing in the waning days of the campaign as he continues campaigning across the country.

Capriles' has vowed to create a Brazilian-style "modern left" that balances free enterprise with social welfare programs. Investors expect him to end a five-year nationalization crusade and reduce state intervention in the economy.

Chavez, who has been in office for 14 years, says he will deepen his oil-financed socialism if he wins another six-year term. That would likely feature continued confrontation with the private sector and efforts to support leftist allies in the region.

Capriles on Monday led a massive caravan in the sweltering state of?Vargas, alongside the Caribbean Sea, waving to supporters from atop a truck. He at times narrowly averted being dragged to the ground by female fans trying to hug him.

"Let me tell you, someone who hasn't done what they were supposed to do in 14 years is not going to do it in the next six years," Capriles told supporters, who sang and danced to salsa in the spirit of?Venezuela's political rallies, which often look more like street parties.

A group of about 100 Chavez supporters waited at the end of the caravan carrying signs that said "Get out, thief" and throwing water bottles at Capriles. The confrontation fizzled without incident, in contrast to recent skirmishes at rallies that have left several people wounded.

The Datanalisis' survey showed Capriles with 37.2 percent of the vote compared with 47.3 percent for Chavez, closer than the 12.5 percentage point difference registered in the last Datanalisis survey.

The poll, which had a margin of error of 2.4 percent, was conducted between Aug. 25 and Sept. 5, the sources said. Datanalisis did not immediately respond to requests for confirmation of the details.

Chavez, 58, leads the majority of the country's best-known polls but they are notoriously controversial and divergent in?Venezuela. Capriles' numbers have been creeping up and another well-known pollster, Consultores 21, has the candidates neck-and-neck.

A close result could spark protests and possibly accusations of fraud. Chavez has repeatedly said the opposition will refuse to accept the results should it lose while the opposition says Chavez will try to avoid handing over power.

Investors broadly believe?Capriles' government?would usher in greater economic stability and gradual dismantling of Chavez's system of currency and price controls.

Capriles also hopes to tap into growing discontent with crime, unemployment and product shortages.

Though Chavez's sweeping crusade of nationalizations and fiery rhetoric have scared off conservative investors, the country's bonds are among the most actively traded emerging market securities thanks to their high yields.

Venezuela's black market for dollars, the result of a increasingly strict controls on foreign exchange, has shot up in recent weeks to more than double the official exchange rate of 4.3 bolivars.

Chavez on Monday led a massive rally in the plains state of?Portuguesa, singing to the crowd, grilling campaign volunteers on their get-out-the-vote efforts and leading supporters in chanting "Chavez will win on October 7."

"What we have done, and it's a lot, is nothing compared with what we will do in the next years of socialist government," said Chavez, wearing a pale blue and white striped jacket and black pants. "I am no longer Chavez at this point, Chavez has become the people, we are all Chavez."

He has appealed to working-class Venezuelans by playing up his humble roots in a small plains village of where he once sold papaya candies and played baseball in dusty fields.

The government recently announced a book of stories about Chavez's youth, compiled by two Cuban reporters who searched YouTube for stories that the garrulous socialist has told during close to 14 years of Sunday talk-shows.

His government pumped up state spending to give out apartments, home appliances and pensions to poor Venezuelans, and has highlighted his social "missions" that provide low-cost health care, job training and university education.

Opposition leaders accuse him of tilting the election in his favor by using state resources for his campaign and dominating television networks with "chain" broadcasts that force private networks to carry his speeches.

He appears to have largely recovered from a cancer diagnosed last year that for weeks left him almost completely out of the public spotlight. Doctors say it can take several years before remission can be totally ruled out.

Imelda Marcos shoe collection now worthless, says Philippines government

Imelda Marcos left behind at least 1,220 pairs of shoes, along with a vast collection of clothes and accessories, when she fled with her husband, President Ferdinand Marcos, during a 1986 uprising. ?

By Jim Gomez,?Associated Press / September 24, 2012

Shoes once worn by flamboyant former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos sit in a section of the National Museum in Manila, Philippine. Termites, storms and government neglect have damaged some of Imelda Marcos's legendary stash of shoes, expensive gowns, and other vanity possessions, which were left to oblivion after she and her dictator husband were driven to US exile by a 1986 popular revolt.

A Philippine official said Monday that a legendary collection of shoes and other possessions left behind by former first lady?Imelda?Marcos?and her dictator husband when they were ousted by a 1986 "people power" revolt have no historical significance, except for some Philippine-made gowns.

Communications Undersecretary Manolo Quezon issued the statement after National Museum officials acknowledged that the collection of?Marcos' clothes and shoes had been neglected for more than two decades and some had been damaged by a monsoon storm last month.

Museum officials told The Associated Press on Sunday that termites, storms and neglect damaged part of Mrs.?Marcos' collection of at least 1,220 pairs of shoes and other items while they were stored from 1986 to 2010 at the Malacanang presidential palace and later at the National Museum in Manila.

More than 150 cartons of clothes, dress accessories and shoes were transferred to the National Museum for safekeeping two years ago from the riverside palace. They deteriorated further at the museum after the boxes were stored in a padlocked room that was inundated by heavy rains last month because of a leak in the ceiling, museum officials said.

Quezon said the contents of the boxes have "no historical significance except some of the clothes" made by prominent Philippine couturiers. Museum officials said the Philippine-made gowns might be displayed in public, but they were wary because of the "politically sensitive nature of their provenance."

A Philippine historian, Michael Xiao Chua, said the?Marcos?items are important and should have been displayed to remind current and future generations of?Marcos' dictatorial rule and encourage them to safeguard the country's democracy.

The damaged items include native see-through barong shirts, which?Marcos?often wore in public ceremonies during his 20-year rule. AP journalists saw a barong shirt with a presidential seal on top of a box of 100 shirts which had reddish stains and a sleeve that was nearly torn off.

The Marcoses fled the Philippines at the climax of an army-backed "people power" revolt which became a harbinger of change in authoritarian regimes worldwide. Mr.?Marcos?died in exile in Hawaii in 1989 and his widow and children returned home years later.

They left staggering amounts of personal belongings, clothes and art objects at the palace, including?Imelda?Marcos' shoes which have come to symbolize her extravagance amid crushing poverty in the Southeast Asian country.

Ferdinand?Marcos' successor, democracy icon Corazon Aquino, accused him of stealing billions of dollars during his rule and ordered many of his assets seized.

Aquino had?Imelda?Marcos' shoes displayed at the presidential palace. They were removed from public view and stored in the palace basement when Aquino stepped down in 1992. About 800 pairs were loaned in 2001 to a shoe museum which has since become a tourist attraction.

New chemistry technique reproduces nature's elusive complexity

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have shown how to synthesize in the laboratory an important set of natural compounds known as terpenes. The largest class of chemicals made by living organisms, terpenes are made within cells by some of the most complex chemical reactions found in biology.

The new technique, described in an advance online edition of the journal Nature Chemistry on Sept. 23, 2012, mimics a crucial but obscure biochemical phenomenon that allows cells to make terpenes. The discovery may one day result in cheaper, fully synthetic versions of the cancer drug Taxol, the antimalarial compound artemisinin and hundreds of other useful terpene products.

"It's exciting for us because we're now making molecules that have never been made in the laboratory before, and we've done this by first observing what nature does," said the senior investigator for the study Ryan A. Shenvi, a chemist at Scripps Research.

Powerful Biological Functions

Terpenes take their name from one of their best-known representatives, the paint thinner turpentine -- a derivative of pine sap. Many terpenes, like those in turpentine, are small, plant-made molecules that turn into vapor at relatively low temperatures and waft easily through the air. These often serve as important chemical signals for plants, and are used by humans in fragrances and flavorings.

Some terpenes are more complex, and are synthesized by plants and other organisms as powerful cellular defense mechanisms. "Having such strong biological functions can make them very useful in medicine," said Shenvi. Paclitaxel (Taxol), a widely used cancer drug, is a terpene derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. Artemisinin, the basis for a major class of antimalarial therapy, is a terpene made by the sweet wormwood herb. But the terpene family is highly diverse and also includes vitamin A, menthol, cholesterol and steroids.

Many terpenes, including Taxol and artemisinin, are made naturally in cells by processes that are so complicated, and so hard to understand, that chemists haven't been able to recreate them fully using organic chemistry techniques. The commercial production of these two medicines still depends on the relatively expensive harvesting of starting compounds from plants.

Taking Up the Challenge

In the new study, Shenvi and a postdoctoral researcher in his laboratory, Sergey V. Pronin, set out to recreate one of the two major terpene synthesis processes in nature. Known as tail-to-head polycyclization, this process is used by cells to make numerous complex terpenes. (The other major terpene synthesis process, head-to-tail polycyclization, is already partially reproducible with organic chemistry, and results in terpenes that include steroids.)

The tail-to-head polycyclization process begins with a relatively simple chain of carbon atoms, each of which is decorated with other, mostly hydrogen atoms. The goal of the process is to bend this linear hydrocarbon structure in a way that yields one ringlike structure, then another, and so on in a "polycyclic" chain.

A crucial feature of this process is the effective displacement of positive charge from one carbon atom on the structure to another, in just the right sequence. What makes this feat so challenging for chemists to reproduce, and even to analyze, is that this positively charged state in principle can slide along numerous alternative pathways on the emerging structure. Moreover, because it powerfully attracts negatively charged ions, this carbon-based positive charge, which chemists refer to as a carbocation ["carbo-cat-eye-on"], is inclined to snuff itself out almost immediately.

"Carbocations are notoriously tricky to include in synthetic procedures in the laboratory, because their lifetimes are so short," said Shenvi. "And yet nature has evolved tools to handle them."

Chief among these tools are cyclase enzymes, which hold terpene molecules that are under construction and use their own charged structures to protect carbocations from being quenched -- at least long enough to let them do their work. Chemists who have sought to synthesize terpenes in the laboratory generally have done so without trying to mimic these enzymes' charge sequestration mechanism.

"The natural synthetic pathways were assumed to be much too difficult and maybe impossible," Shenvi said. "But we decided that we would have to recreate it somehow if we wanted to develop a broadly useful technique for making this group of terpenes."

Following Nature's Lead

Pronin and Shenvi eventually found that a type of vinyl epoxide seems to serve as a partial substitute for cyclase enzymes. "We think that it effectively holds the negatively charged counteranion, which would otherwise follow and quench the carbocation before the reaction is complete," said Pronin.

As a demonstration of the power of their new technique, the chemists used it to make two different types of terpene, known as funebrene and cumacrene, starting from relatively simple organic chemistry ingredients. These terpene compounds had never before been fully synthesized outside of living cells.

Shenvi emphasizes that this report represents merely an initial, foundational description of this new strategy, and that technical obstacles still prevent its widespread use. "But once we can get past these obstacles, we should be able to use this new approach to fully synthesize many other valuable compounds," he said. "Basically the entire realm of terpenes will be reproducible with organic chemistry."

Funding for the study, "Synthesis of highly strained terpenes by non-stop tail-to-head polycyclization," was provided by a start-up grant from the Scripps Research Institute and a grant from Eli Lilly & Co.

NES light gun gets a laser upgrade, fulfils countless childhood dreams (video)

Image

While it's not the DL-44 heavy blaster we've been holding out for, this Nintendo Zapper is almost as cool. Using the classic Duck Hunt light gun from the original NES, the team at North Street Labs created their own laser pistol. Using a 445nm diode, some batteries, wiring and imagination, the light gun was painstakingly put together, complete with physical safety lock and custom aim-assisting heat sink. The end result is a bona fide laser shootin' gun, capable of not only setting alight matches from a distance, but setting the curtains on fire too (probably). See it in action in the video after the break, where it also tops out their laser meter, rating it -- at least -- at an eyeball popping 2W. Then tap up the source to see how -- for educational purposes -- you could make your own.

Microsoft issues security patches for Flash vulnerabilities in Windows 8 and Internet Explorer

As promised, Microsoft is issuing a security patch for a Flash vulnerability on Windows 8 in Internet Explorer 10. Though the operating system has yet to see its official public release, researchers testing the RTM version found a bug that could cause Flash to crash and allow for attackers to take control of a user's machine. Additionally, the company is rolling out an update to address a security hole in Internet Explorer versions 7 and 8 on Windows XP -- and IE 9 on Windows 7 and Windows Vista -- which left the door open for hackers to spread malware via a specially designed Flash animation. Both security patches are available via Microsoft's Windows Update service.

Military-style tactics seen in US Consulate siege

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The heavily armed extremists who laid siege to the U.S. Consulate in Libya used military-style tactics that may have steered Americans toward a waiting ambush, U.S. officials said Friday as they pieced together details about how the compound was overrun.

U.S. intelligence indicates that 50 or more people, many of them masked, were responsible for the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi. Gun trucks provided added firepower. The attackers set up a perimeter, controlling access in and out of the compound. A first wave of attacks sent the Americans fleeing to a fallback building, where a second group of extremists beset them with precise mortar fire.

Intelligence reports were still coming in, but officials told The Associated Press that what may have initially seemed like a protest over an anti-Islam movie that had spun out of control now showed the hallmarks of a more sophisticated operation.

In a country coming off a civil war, a level of battlefield savvy does not prove the attack on the compound was planned well in advance. How much planning went into the operation and whether it could have been detected or prevented remain unanswered questions, officials said.

The attacks killed Ambassador Chris Stevens, diplomat Sean Smith and two former Navy SEALs, who U.S. officials said were security officers guarding diplomatic officials. Stevens was visiting Benghazi from Tripoli to preside over the opening of an "American Space" cultural center.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss intelligence reports. They stressed that even now authorities do not have a clear understanding of exactly what happened in Benghazi. FBI agents from New York and Washington were in Libya investigating the attack.

"What happened in Benghazi was a terrorist attack," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday. "And we will not rest until we have tracked down and brought to justice the terrorists who murdered four Americans."

Officials have not singled out one responsible group, but have focused their attention on Ansar al-Shariah, a Libyan militant group led by a former detainee at the U.S. military-run prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Since the civil war that ousted Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year, the country has been awash with rebels, militias and terrorists. Weaponry is easy to come by, both from the former regime, from weapons depots looted during the war, and from foreign powers that armed the rebellion. The origin of the weapons used in the assault on the U.S. compound was unclear, officials said.

Whether the attack was premeditated carries both political and intelligence significance.

From an intelligence standpoint, the longer an operation was in the works ahead of the attack, the more the U.S. government will face scrutiny for not anticipating and preparing for it.

Politically, Republicans have accused President Barack Obama's administration of misreading the assault as an outgrowth of Middle East demonstrations over an American-made Internet video insulting the Islamic prophet Muhammad. They have also criticized the protection of the consulate, particularly since the attack fell on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a date when authorities are normally on alert for attacks.

White House spokesman Jay Carney has said there was no evidence the attack was premeditated. Obama has said extremists used the protests as an excuse to attack.

A spontaneous protest that turns violent is harder to predict and respond to.

"The intelligence agencies are still not confident enough to represent to us whether it was planned in advance or taking the opportunity of a spontaneous protest," Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Friday.

Investigators say some of the people involved have a "hodgepodge of affiliations with multiple militant groups," making it hard to hold one particular militia or movement responsible, said a senior U.S. intelligence official, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to be quoted publicly describing the investigation.

Wanis al-Sharef, who was Libya's deputy interior minister until he was fired after the attacks, said a small group of lightly armed gunmen were the first to gather outside the compound. They were then joined by a crowd of civilians protesting the film. Finally, a larger group of heavily armed men arrived with gun vehicles and grenade launchers. That final group was responsible for the siege.

Ansar al-Shariah has repeatedly denied being any part of the attack, but eyewitnesses and security officials said the group's militiamen were among the gunmen who joined the demonstration outside the compound. The group claimed its fighters were only in the Benghazi area providing security at Jalaa Hospital. But that's more than three miles from the U.S. compound, which lies on the outskirts of the city in a rural area.

One witness said he was detained by Ansar al-Shariah members during the protest because he was taking pictures of one of their leaders.

Whoever they were, the attackers stormed the main building and set it on fire. One U.S. official described the militants striking the front of the building first, distracting security, while a second group struck then from the rear. Many people escaped and fled to an annex to the east.

About an hour after the assault began, American and Libyan forces retook control of the compound and brought everyone to the annex. Rescue teams headed their way.

Intelligence indicates the gunmen broke off into teams to block certain roads away from the compound, officials said. Whether that changed the route or otherwise influenced how the Americans moved through the streets remains unclear, but one U.S. official said the tactic was being looked at as an indication of battlefield strategy and sophistication.

As the Americans waited to be rescued from the annex, that building came under mortar fire. Mortars are short-range bombs that launch in high arcs. Aiming them can be a matter of trial and error. But U.S. officials said mortars were landing directly on the roof of the annex.

That, officials said, indicated an experienced fighter, a well-planned assault or both.
