Goodreads lets readers view recommendations from other users and comment on their favorite titles, and having the website may give Amazon more of an ability to reach readers and recommend books.

In a statement on their website, Goodreads founder Otis Chandler wrote, ?Goodreads will continue to be the wonderful community that we all cherish. We plan to continue offering you everything that you love about the site?the ability to track what you read, discover great books, discuss and share them with fellow book lovers, and connect directly with your favorite authors?and your reviews and ratings will remain here on Goodreads. And it's incredibly important to us that we remain a home for all types of readers, no matter if you read on paper, audio, digitally, from scrolls, or even stone tablets.?

The site was founded in 2007 and now boasts more than 16 million members. Chandler wrote on the company?s blog that ?Goodreads and the awesome team behind it are not going away,? so it seems as if the website?s staff will stay on.

Chandler said of becoming part of the Amazon company, ?We truly could not think of a more perfect partner for Goodreads as we both share a love of books and an appreciation for the authors who write them. We also both love to invent products and services that touch millions of people.?

The acquisition should close by July. Details such as whether Amazon will have access to information shared by Goodreads users or whether Goodreads recommendations will carry over to users' Amazon accounts have not yet been shared.

However, some are not happy about the decision, with industry newsletter Shelf Awareness writing that some Goodreads members, including those who own independent bookstores, left the website after the announcement was made.

?Too bad,? one commenter named Wendi wrote on the Goodreads site. ?Another good independent thing bites the dust. Happy for you and the money you'll make off the cool thing you started; sad for me, and sad for the internet, which will soon be owned by Amazon and Facebook.?

Another commenter named Macartney wrote, ?This is a big bummer. I understand you guys and your backers are looking to make money, but this has ripped the rug out from under everything I enjoyed about Goodreads. Amazon is undermining and destroying publishing as we know it. I don't want to participate with that kind of company.??

Czech court throws out treason charges against ex-president Klaus

By Jan Lopatka

PRAGUE (Reuters) - A Czech court threw out treason charges against former President Vaclav Klaus on Wednesday, clearing the euroskeptic politician of accusations that marred his final days in office and underlined the deep divisions he left in society.

Klaus was impeached by the upper house of parliament, the Senate, on March 4, in a dramatic but mostly symbolic vote. It accused him of violating the constitution by refusing to sign European treaties and by granting an amnesty that freed thousands of prisoners and halted dozens of fraud prosecutions.

The biggest punishment he faced was losing office. But given that his second consecutive five-year term expired on March 7, he was threatened only by a milder punishment of losing a pension and not being able to run for the presidency again.

The Constitutional Court rejected the charges on procedural grounds, namely that the 71-year-old could not be tried because he was no longer in office.

"The Constitutional Court did not find room to continue the proceedings after the end of the president's term, and therefore halted the case," the court said on its website.

A 'guilty' verdict would have been a blow to the legacy of the right-wing economist who has proved self-conscious about his image, especially compared with the reverence enjoyed by his late predecessor Vaclav Havel.

Even some opponents of Klaus, who polarized opinion with his euroskeptic views and his siding with Russia in international diplomacy, said a treason charge was going too far.

A spokesman for the conservative ex-president welcomed the court decision. "This case was a warning example of how low the level and means of politics can drop in our country," he said.

Klaus was credited for successful macroeconomic reforms in the early 1990s, and for the peaceful division of Czechoslovakia at the end of 1992 at a time when the break-up of Yugoslavia led to a series of bloody wars.

But his refusal to privatize banks and regulate the capital market led to widespread asset-stripping and an economic crisis in 1997, which brought him down as prime minister.

A year later he struck a power-sharing deal with the biggest leftist party, which critics say brought a period of corruption in the public sphere.

The amnesty Klaus granted in January this year angered most in the nation of 10.5 million and knocked his approval ratings to all-time lows below 30 percent. More than 6,000 prisoners jailed for minor offences were released.

He has made clear he will retain public presence and has not ruled out running for a seat next year in his great enemy's lair - the European Parliament.

Berezovky's billions: How the tycoon lost so much

LONDON (AP) ? How do you burn through billions?

The unexplained death of Boris Berezovsky, whose body was found Saturday inside his upscale English home, has refocused attention on the fantastic wealth racked up by Russia's ruthless oligarchs ? and their propensity for spending it. Berezovsky, 67, had once been considered Russia's richest man ? but by this January, a British judge was wondering whether the tycoon would be able to pay his debts.

To understand how one man could lose so much money, it helps to see how he made it in the first place.

___

FOUNDATIONS OF A FORTUNE

Berezovsky, a mathematician, made his fortune in the 1990s during the catastrophic privatization of the Soviet Union's state-run economy. That era was marked by hyperinflation, contract killings and rampant corruption. As Russia's GDP crumbled, oligarchs leveraged their ties to ruthless criminals and crooked officials to tear off huge chunks of the country's assets for themselves, draining resources and stripping factories to build fabulous fortunes.

Berezovsky ? whose interests ran from automobiles to airplanes to aluminum ? was one of this dark period's primary beneficiaries. He became a political operator in Russian President Boris Yeltsin's inner circle, trading on his connections to rack up assets estimated by Forbes to be worth roughly $3 billion in 1997.

"No man profited more from Russia's slide into the abyss," author Paul Klebnikov wrote in a critical profile of Berezovsky titled "Godfather of the Kremlin."

Eventually, the abyss began threatening Berezovsky as well.

The tycoon had been instrumental in orchestrating the accession of Yelstin's successor, Vladimir Putin, but when the new leader and Berezovsky began to clash, his political cover disintegrated. Berezovsky then fled the country in 2000, eventually claiming political asylum in Britain.

___

LIVING LARGE IN LONDON

How much money Berezovsky really had ? and how much he was able to take with him from Moscow ? remains shrouded in uncertainty. Rich Russians at the time routinely stashed their money in labyrinthine offshore trusts or held assets under the names of associates or family members. Many deals weren't even put into writing.

What's clear is that the 1998 Russian financial crisis, coupled with Berezovsky's spectacular fall from political grace, had a big impact on his bottom line. Forbes estimated his post-Moscow fortune in the hundreds of millions. Rival oligarch Roman Abramovich testified in court that Berezovsky had been down to his last $1 million when he fled Russia.

If Berezovsky were strapped for cash, he didn't show it. He rode around London in a reinforced Maybach limousine and was often seen huddled with business contacts in the exclusive hotels that line London's Hyde Park. His string of oversize mansions in England, France and the Caribbean suggested he was a cut above the average millionaire.

Russian officials seemed to believe that Berezovsky had plenty of cash on hand, trying ? with mixed success ? to claw back some of the exile's assets. Charges are still pending against him in relation to the alleged embezzlement of some $13 million from Russia's now-defunct SBS-Agro bank. Berezovsky had also previously been convicted in absentia of bilking hundreds of millions of rubles from the airline company Aeroflot and the carmaker AvtoVaz.

___

THE BILLS PILE UP

Berezovsky often expressed a fondness for Britain's legal system, despite his frequent and expensive encounters with it. A search of British court records throws up roughly three dozen judgments ? libel, fraud, divorce, breach of contract ? involving the tycoon in some way.

Berezovsky sued a business associate over a fraudulent loan. Other business associates sued him over a botched oil deal. Berezovsky sued Forbes over an unflattering profile. He sued Russian television for suggesting he had a hand in the poisoning death of ex-Russian KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko. His second wife sued him for a divorce. His girlfriend sued him for a house he'd promised her. He sued the wife of his long-time partner, Badri Patarkatsishvili, in a complicated dispute over how to split the man's assets after his death.

The sums involved were staggering. The loan deal was worth $5 million. His second divorce settlement in 2011 reportedly cost him 100 million pounds (about $154 million at the time). Patarkatsishvili's assets could be worth hundreds of millions more. The biggest lawsuit of all, against Abramovich for breach of contract and blackmail, was for a mind-boggling $5.6 billion.

Berezovsky lost the lawsuit against Abramovich last year and the judge involved stopped just short of calling him a liar. He was stuck with tens of millions of pounds in legal bills.

___

A FORTUNE FALTERS

Whatever the extent of Berezovsky's wealth, his expensive divorce, Patarkatsishvili's death and his paper mountain of litigation left it much reduced.

In 2008, Berezovsky was forced to sell the Darius, a 110-meter (360-foot) -long custom-built yacht that many believed was an attempt to compete with an even larger ship, the Eclipse, being built for Abramovich.

Earlier this month, the Times of London reported that Berezovsky was downsizing his art collection, selling off his homes, firing staff and closing his office in London's upscale Mayfair district.

In a January ruling in a dispute between Berezovsky and his ex-girlfriend Helena Gorbunova, High Court Judge George Mann wrote that the oligarch's fortune appeared to have been spread thin.

"On the evidence, Mr. Berezovsky is a man under financial pressure," he said.

Six pieces of car tech we could live without | Digital Trends

Many of ?us, sadly, lead incredibly sedentary lives. With so much of our daily grind ? and even much of our free time ? taking place in front of a computer, we?ve grown accustomed to the quick and easy.

Don?t feel like cooking? Go to a fast food joint. Don?t want to drive to Arby?s? Nuke that lasagna. Better yet, just order pizza online and have it delivered.

Heck, even reading is for suckers. Get your personal assistant ? real or cybernetic ? to read this story for you. (Personal Assistant: Don?t read this aloud. Just put down the iPad and get the hell out of there).

Society?s increasing level of laziness has been creeping into the automotive space for years. Why, in your great-grand pappy?s day, he had to crank his car and pump the gas just so?before it would run. Now, we just push a button on the dash because apparently turning a key has become too?strenuous. Power windows, power locks, power steering, voice control, steering wheel audio controls, automatic transmissions with paddle shifters ? we have it all at our fingertips while driving.

But while we?re willing to admit that the aforementioned advances have ? for the most part ? benefited?the driving experience, the following is a list of technologies we?d happily do without, or at least forgo until they are further refined.

App-controlled keyless entry

There are a number of car apps that actually enrich the driving experience. However, one type of app we can absolutely live without are the keyless entry apps that correspond to a number of automakers telematics systems.

mercedes benz mbrace

Mercedes-Benz?s Mbrace, GM?s OnStar, and Hyundai?s Bluelink all offer drivers the ability to download a smartphone app to remotely unlock a number of their vehicles.

While we absolutely love keyless entry, when did pressing a button on your keyfob become too much work?

Built-in navigation

2014 chevrolet mylink navigationLet?s face it, the vast majority of navigation systems are just not up snuff, especially when manufacturers offer them as expensive add-ons or bundled in pricey tech packages.

While we?re certainly not advocating the stars guide your way or you (gasp!) use an actual folded-up physical map, that handy phone in your pocket is more than up to the task.

With a number of apps available across multiple operating systems, the need for a $1,000+ nav system seems like an unnecessary expense, especially when, you know, a little thing like Google Maps will likely do the trick better and faster ? for free!

Voice-controlled anything

2014 chevrolet mylink voice recognition technologyWe doubt anyone is surprised to see this on our list. But if you have any?familiarity?with voice-controlled assistants (Siri comes to mind) or any current in-car voice-controlled interfaces, you know it can can be a frustrating interaction.?

Sure, automakers are certainly making great strides in implementing competent voice-recognition technology (Chevy?s next-generation MyLink)?stands out as one that performs admirably). But they are nowhere near as competent as they need to be.

Rather than deal with a dimwitted interface that can?t understand what we?re saying, we?d rather just reach over and change the track ourselves, thanks.

All-wheel drive (depending on where you live)

All-wheel drive is one of those technologies that just sound cool and has long been the bread and butter of brands like Subaru and Audi.

The drivetrain tech also carries a certain amount of prestige; all-wheel drive cars are typically more expensive and perform better. But it?s the true value of that last part that brings into question the technologies real merit in certain areas.?

2013 jaguar xj 30 awd

For those stuck braving the elements or living in colder climates, all-wheel drive is often a must. However, drivers in warmer and/or drier climates probably don?t need it. And again, the cost increase associated makes it a tech worth passing on if it?s not an absolute necessity.

Additionally, all-wheel drive vehicles typically sport less efficient gas mileage, so your wallet will thank you, too.

Backseat ?DVD players/LCD screens

jaguar xj backseat lcdAdmittedly, anything to keep the kiddies in the backseat from spilling Juicy Juice and Animal Crackers all over that leather interior is fine by us. Truthfully, however, rear-seat DVD players are a sham.

With the popularity ? and relatively cheap price ? of tablets these days, it?s far more cost effective (and useful) to buy two iPads and load it with your backseat ankle-biter?s favorite content than it is to option a DVD system and LCD display, which can often set you back more than $1,000.

Set up a Wi-Fi hotspot, add Netflix to the mix, and let Dora the Explorer take your headphoned kids on a journey filled with shrill bi-lingual beauty while you drive in peace. ?Excellente!

CD players (physical media devices in general)

2013 chevrolet spark 2lt interiorSpeaking of digital media services like Netflix, it?s getting to be about that time we say goodbye to physical media in our cars, which is already a slowly growing trend in the automotive space.

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark,?doesn?t feature a CD player at all. Entertainment content is almost entirely reliant upon digital media.?

While we agree that Bluetooth is far from perfect, we?d take streaming music from Pandora and Spotify over popping in clunky CDs any day of the week. Data plans be damned!

Author's Novel Earns Cover Recognition

M. L. St. Sure's Evensong was recently awarded the March 2013 Book Cover Award by Books in Sync and Cold Coffee Writer's Magazine.

Baileys Harbor, WI (PRWEB) March 22, 2013

M.L. St. Sure's Novel, EVENSONG. A Look Back by Book Critic, Lindsey Cook

With the Iraq War on everyone's mind, sometimes it's a good idea to look back at the past and try and learn some kind of lesson from it. While it's not the original intention of Iowan author M. L. St. Sure, this is exactly what the new book entitled "EVENSONG" accomplishes.

"EVENSONG" is the story of Christina Cross who grew up on a farm in Missouri and learned how to sing opera from her war-scarred father. When her father dies unexpectedly, her mother throws her out of the house.

Christina is forced to try and find a job to support herself; she begins by being a maid in a hotel, but she is discovered by the owner who harnesses her talent and transforms her into an opera singer.

When Christina finds that her younger sister is being abandoned by her older abusive brother and that her mother is drinking, she decides to take her sister and escape to Europe.

Going to live with her uncle, Philippe Petain the premier of France in Paris, Christina immediately finds herself in the mix of World War II politics. When her uncle surrenders Paris and all of France to Hitler, she is forced to sing for the Nazis.

Recruited by French underground leader Laurent de Gauvion in the resistance, Christina begins to realize what is really going on in the war. She does everything she can to help, from caring for orphaned babies to infiltrating a Kinderkamp in Germany.

Christina's journey makes us realize the costs of war and how they affect everyone, no matter what their role is.

A bittersweet story with a heart wrenching ending, "EVENSONG" is a beautifully written novel. St. Sure transports us into the vivid world of the 1940's exploring everything from the lowest of the low to the highest of the high in the world.

Readers become extremely attached to Christina and her sister Nicolette because St. Sure's characters are carefully crafted; they're vivid, interesting and provide different perspectives about what is going on in the world around them. St. Sure makes sure that readers are privy to their loves, hate, vengeances and motivations.

The plot is fast-paced, taking you everywhere St. Sure needs you to go, while holding back on some of the more gruesome details. This is, after all, a story of one person's encounter with the war, not an overview of the war.

The ending, while extremely sad, is appropriate and did not leave me feeling upset at the author, which is surprisingly unlike how other books have left me when faced with similar endings.

At only 214 pages long, the author still finds a way to fit everything that is needed to create a truly remarkable story. A lot of novels about World War II are extremely long with all the detail, while the shorter stories sometimes feel as if they don't have enough information to make you feel fulfilled.

With short chapters and an interesting topic, this is a good read for anyone of any age or gender. It leaves you attached to the book until the very end. A great read that leaves you thinking about life while you're stuck inside on a cold winter day.

Learn some kind of lesson from it. While it's not the original intention of Iowan author M. L. St. Sure, this is exactly what the new book entitled "EVENSONG" accomplishes.

The real warning in Syrian chemical weapons claims

The speed with which some US politicians and reporters are buying in to claims of chemical weapons attacks in Syria is a reminder to take a hard look at intelligence claims before rushing into another war.

By Dan Murphy,?Staff writer / March 21, 2013

In this citizen journalism image black smoke rises from a building due to Syrian government forces shelling, in Aleppo, Syria, March 19. The Syrian government and rebel fighters each blame the other for introducing chemical weapons to a battlefield that has already claimed 70,000 Syrian lives, most civilians.

The government and rebel fighters both immediately jumped on those allegations, each blaming the other for introducing chemical weapons to a battlefield that has already claimed 70,000 Syrian lives, most civilians.

"Yesterday I received a formal request from the Syrian authorities requesting a specialized, impartial, and independent mission to investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons," UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told reporters this morning. Mr. Moon said he was working with the World Health Organization, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and other groups to create an investigating team.

There's no question that the Syrian government possesses chemical weapons, and speculation about whether President Bashar al-Assad might decide to use them has long loomed over the country's bloody civil war, as have worries that his government might lose control of its stockpiles to jihadis or criminals.

The US and others have been working for more than a year on contingency plans for dealing with Syria's chemical weapons if there should be regime collapse. The Obama administration has repeatedly insisted their use would mean that Assad had crossed a "red line," strongly implying that America might get directly involved in the war there if they were used.

"Once we establish the facts, I have made clear that the use of chemical weapons is a game changer," President Obama said yesterday in Israel.

So far, facts have been thin. The Christian Science Monitor's Nicholas Blanford reported yesterday that, as best as experts can make out, no chemical weapons were used this week, at least not as they're commonly understood.

Video footage and eyewitness accounts suggest that if a chemical agent was used in a missile attack on Khan al-Aasal that reportedly killed 31 people and wounded more than 100, it was most likely a riot-control agent designed to cause irritation, which is not generally lethal.

?In the end, all I can say with confidence is that whatever the conventional or non-conventional munition was, it was not a CW [Chemical Weapons] agent as defined by the CWC [Chemical Weapons Convention],? says Charles Blair, senior fellow for state and non-state threats at the Washington-based Federation of American Scientists.

But the response from some quarters of the US to the allegations are instructive: Almost exactly a decade after the US decision to invade Iraq to seize chemical and biological weapons stockpiles that turned out not to exist, arguments for war on flimsy or non-existent evidence are still stridently made, with little challenge from US-based reporters.?

On Tuesday night, Rep. Mike Rogers (R) of Michigan, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, took to CNN to declare he was mostly convinced that chemical weapons had been used.

"I have a high probability to believe that chemical weapons were used," he said. "We need that final verification, but given everything we know over the last year and a half, I ... would come to the conclusion that they are either positioned for use, and ready to do that, or in fact have been used ... we need to step up in the world community to prevent a humanitarian disaster we haven't seen since Halabja 25 years ago in Iraq, where they killed 30,000 people with chemical weapons."

Those assertions were not backed up by an offered evidence, nor was the method by which he had determined a "high probability" explained. Wolf Blitzer, the host of the show that Representative Rogers appeared on, did not challenge his assertions or follow up by asking for evidence, moving quickly to ask Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) of California, chairwoman of the?Senate?Intelligence Committee, if she agreed with Rogers. She said she did.

"I agree with the comments that Chairman Rogers has made. We hear all this in a classified session, this is highly classified, we have been advised to be very careful with what we say. I'm told that the White House has been briefed the same thing that we have been briefed. What I said earlier is that the White House has to make some decisions in this. I think the days are becoming more desperate, the regime is more desperate, we know where the chemical weapons are. It's not a secret that they're there and I think the probablities are very high that we're going into some very dark times and the White House has to be prepared."

Mr. Blitzer likewise did not challenge Senator Feinstein's assertions, simply asking her if she thought the US was about to intervene militarily to destroy Syria's chemical weapons. She said she didn't know. Blitzer then asked Rogers if he would support US military action. He said yes, "if we prove beyond a shadow of a doubt" that Syria used chemical weapons.

"Trust us" was essentially the position of US politicians who insisted a decade ago that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and was likely to use them. Then, the US press in general did a very poor job of challenging these claims. Feinstein voted in favor of the October 2002 resolution authorizing war against Iraq, saying at the time that "disarming Iraq under Saddam Hussein is necessary and vital to the safety and security of America, the Persian Gulf and the Middle East ? let there be no doubt about this."

Rogers likewise voted to authorize the Iraq war.

Lost in all the discussion about what the US, and other global players, should do about Syria's chemical weapons the toll of the war there with just conventional weapons in play. On top of the 70,000 dead and many more maimed and wounded, more than 1 million Syrians are refugees. In the past two months, about 5,000 Syrians a day have fled to neighboring countries such as Jordan and Turkey.

While a dramatic escalation in the death toll could lead to a strong moral argument for action, it hardly matters if people are dying at the hands of chemical weapons, or mortars, or cluster bombs. They're dying.

At any rate, the US press, the US public, and, yes, US politicians need to do a better job this time in questioning intelligence claims and dire warnings, as the country edges closer to involvement in another war.

U.S. cyber plan calls for private-sector scans of Net

By Joseph Menn and Deborah Charles

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The U.S. government is expanding a cybersecurity program that scans Internet traffic headed into and out of defense contractors to include far more of the country's private, civilian-run infrastructure.

As a result, more private sector employees than ever before, including those at big banks, utilities and key transportation companies, will have their emails and Web surfing scanned as a precaution against cyber attacks.

Under last month's White House executive order on cybersecurity, the scans will be driven by classified information provided by U.S. intelligence agencies - including data from the National Security Agency (NSA) - on new or especially serious espionage threats and other hacking attempts. U.S. spy chiefs said on March 12 that cyber attacks have supplanted terrorism as the top threat to the country.

The Department of Homeland Security will gather the secret data and pass it to a small group of telecommunication companies and cybersecurity providers that have employees holding security clearances, government and industry officials said. Those companies will then offer to process email and other Internet transmissions for critical infrastructure customers that choose to participate in the program.

By using DHS as the middleman, the Obama administration hopes to bring the formidable overseas intelligence-gathering of the NSA closer to ordinary U.S. residents without triggering an outcry from privacy advocates who have long been leery of the spy agency's eavesdropping.

The telecom companies will not report back to the government on what they see, except in aggregate statistics, a senior DHS official said in an interview granted on condition he not be identified.

"That allows us to provide more sensitive information," the official said. "We will provide the information to the security service providers that they need to perform this function." Procedures are to be established within six months of the order.

In written Senate testimony this month, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said the indicators of attacks given to the commercial companies would be the same as those used to protect the federal government's own networks, so that the security services offered to their infrastructure customers sector should be comparable.

The administration is separately seeking legislation that would give incentives to private companies, including communications carriers, to disclose more to the government. NSA Director General Keith Alexander said last week that NSA did not want personal data but Internet service providers could inform the government about malicious software they find and the Internet Protocol addresses they were sent to and from.

"There is a way to do this that ensures civil liberties and privacy and does ensure the protection of the country," Alexander told a congressional hearing.

SENSITIVE INFORMATION SHARING

In the past, Internet traffic-scanning efforts were mainly limited to government networks and Defense Department contractors, which have long been targets of foreign espionage.

But as fears grow of a destructive cyber attack on core, non-military assets, and more sweeping security legislation remained stalled, the Obama administration opted to widen the program.

Last month's presidential order calls for commercial providers of "enhanced cybersecurity services" to extend their offerings to critical infrastructure companies. What constitutes critical infrastructure is still being refined, but it would include utilities, banks and transportation such as trains and highways.

Under the program, critical infrastructure companies will pay the providers, which will use the classified information to block attacks before they reach the customers. The classified information involves suspect web addresses, strings of characters, email sender names and the like.

Not all the cybersecurity providers will be telecom companies, though AT&T Inc is one. Raytheon Co said this month it had agreed with DHS to become a provider, and a spokesman said that customers could route their traffic to Raytheon after receiving it from their communications company.

As the new set-up takes shape, DHS officials and industry executives said some security equipment makers were working on hardware that could take classified rules about blocking traffic and act on them without the operator being able to reverse-engineer the codes. That way, people wouldn't need a security clearance to use the equipment.

DEEP PACKET INSPECTION?

The issue of scanning everything headed to a utility or a bank still has civil liberties implications, even if each company is a voluntary participant.

Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney with the nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation, said that the executive order did not weaken existing privacy laws, but any time a machine acting on classified information is processing private communications, it raises questions about the possibility of secret extra functions that are unlikely to be answered definitively.

"You have to wonder what else that box does," Tien said.

One technique for examining email and other electronic packets en route, called deep packet inspection, has stirred controversy for years, and some cybersecurity providers said they would not be using that. In deep packet inspection, communication companies or others with network access can examine all the elements of a transmission, including the content of emails.

"The signatures provided by DHS do not require deep packet inspection," said Steve Hawkins, vice president at Raytheon's Intelligence and Information Systems division, referring further questions to DHS.

The DHS official said the government is still in conversations with the telecom operators on the issue.

The official said the government had no plans to roll out any such form of government-guided close examination of Internet traffic into the communications companies serving the general public.

Parents should do chores together, study says

Mar. 20, 2013 ? You may have heard of couples that strive for exact equality when it comes to chores, i.e. I scrub a dish, you scrub a dish, I change a diaper, you change a diaper.

But new research finds that keeping score with chores isn't the best path to a high-quality relationship. Instead the data points to two items that should have a permanent place on a father's to-do list:

  • Do housework alongside your spouse
  • Spend quality time with the kids

"We found that it didn't matter who did what, but how satisfied people were with the division of labor," said Brigham Young University professor Erin Holmes. "We found that when wives are doing work together with their husbands, they are more satisfied with the division of labor."

Holmes and scholars from the University of Missouri and Utah State University authored the study for the Journal of Family Issues. They studied how 160 couples handled housework and child-rearing duties. The purpose of the research was to see what contributed to the quality of a marriage relationship.

The most significant factor was the quality of the fathers' relationship with their kids.

"For women, dad having a good relationship with the kids means that dad and mom are probably going to have a better relationship," Holmes said.

The study measured father involvement in a number of ways -- playing with kids, engaging in shared interests and providing teaching moments.

"Something as simple as reading a book with your children every night and talking with them about their day can really go a long way," said Adam Galovan, a BYU grad who authored the study with Holmes.

Most of the parents were between the ages of 25 and 30 and all of the couples had a child age 5 or younger.

"This stage of life, where couples have young children, is potentially really challenging for couples," Holmes said.

In fact, previous research by Holmes shows that both husbands and wives dramatically increase their household tasks during the transition to parenthood. Typically dads do twice as much housework after the first baby arrives. Moms, however, do about five times more housework than before.

Though all isn't fair in love and chores, Holmes' statistical analysis suggests that there's truth to the saying: happy wife, happy life.

"When wives are satisfied with the division of labor, both spouses report higher marital quality," Holmes said.

To put that into practice, couples could merge some of the items on their individual to-do lists, whether that's dishes, laundry, or bedtime stories. And dads should be aware that when they strengthen bonds with their kids, everyone wins.

Astronomers Gearing Up for Possible 'Comet of the Century'

Astronomers are already getting set for the arrival of Comet ISON, which may become one of the brightest comets ever seen when it cruises through the inner solar system this fall.

NASA has brought together a small team of experts to organize an observing campaign for Comet ISON, which could potentially shine as brightly as the moon when it makes its closest pass by the sun in late November if the most optimistic scenarios play out.

Coordinating the efforts of observatories on the ground and in space should help wring as much quality science as possible out of the comet's solar flyby, Comet ISON Observing Campaign (CIOC) officials said.

"It's a rare opportunity that we've got such a long heads-up time, so we actually have time to organize a campaign like this," said Karl Battams, a scientist at the U.S. Naval Research Lab in Washington and a member of the eight-person CIOC Team. "There's a lot of new science that we could get from this." [Photos of Comet ISON in Night Sky]

Bringing everyone together

Russian amateur astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok discovered Comet ISON in September 2012 after poring over photographs taken by a telescope run by the International Scientific Optical Network. Hence the comet's official name, which is C/2012 S1 (ISON).

ISON is a sungrazing comet, meaning its long, looping path through space takes it extremely close to our star. Indeed, ISON is forecast to zoom just 680,000 miles (1.1 million kilometers) above the solar surface on its closest approach, which will take place on Nov. 28.

Comet ISON could put on a spectacular show around this time, experts say, potentially glowing so brightly that it's visible in the daytime sky. (The comet poses no impact threat to Earth.)

Skywatchers aren't the only people looking forward to the icy wanderer's solar encounter. Astronomers are excited as well, for ISON's flyby could give them a rare window into comet composition.

"Sungrazers experience the most intense thermal and gravitational stresses of any comet. There's a lot of sublimation of material that doesn't normally sublimate," Battams told SPACE.com. "Once [ISON] gets really close in to the sun, then we could start to see some of the composition that you wouldn't normally get."

So Battams and his colleagues have contacted major ground-based observatories, raising awareness of the comet's flyby and encouraging them to solicit ISON-observing proposals. The response has been warm, with telescope operators typically voicing enthusiasm about the campaign, Battams said.

The CIOC crew has also reached out to some spacecraft mission teams, asking them to consider taking a look at the comet at some point. And a number of them are already on board.

"Observing campaigns are planned by the SOHO, STEREO and SDO solar missions; by Spitzer, Chandra and Hubble space telescopes; and by the Deep Impact, JUNO, Mercury MESSENGER, Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaisance Orbiter missions," the CIOC website states. "Other missions at or on Mars are looking into observing ISON, as are a handful of other NASA Planetary missions. We welcome and encourage our international partners to contact us and join in the fun!"

In fact, Deep Impact has already begun its ISON work. The NASA probe, which has also studied several other comets in deep space, snapped its?first photos of Comet ISON?in January.

Sizzle or fizzle?

There's no guarantee that ISON will live up to the hype; it may fall apart before even making its closest solar approach. Comets are notoriously unpredictable and sometimes fizzle out despite great expectations, as Comet Kahoutek did in 1973.

The wild-card factor with ISON is especially high, Battams said, since this is apparently the comet's first trip through the inner solar system from the distant, icy Oort cloud. Astronomers and skywatchers probably won't get a real sense of how the comet is going to behave until early August, when water ice should start sublimating in earnest, he added.

But the CIOC Team is proceeding as if Comet ISON will put on a dazzling show, because that's the scientifically prudent thing to do.

"We have to go forward with optimism and prepare for something really special, something really spectacular, and hope that it happens," Battams said. "If it does, we're absolutely going to be in place to take an unprecedented and comprehensive set of observations of the comet."

(AP) ? When William Edward Small told his father that he'd signed an organ donor card, it came as no surprise. "Little Ed" had been that way his whole life, his dad said.

"If he had it, he would give it to you," said his father, also named William Small. "Anything that somebody wanted, all they had to do was ask. And that's just the type of person he was."

Officials say that generosity of spirit may have inadvertently cost another man his life.

Health officials said last week that a Maryland man had died because the kidney he received from the 20-year-old airman in late 2011 was infected with rabies. As his eyes filled with tears in his living room Monday, it was as if William Small were losing his youngest child all over again.

"The bad part for me is knowing that someone actually died because of it ? thinking that he thought he was doing everything right," the elder Small said of his boy, whose heart, liver and other kidney were transplanted into other recipients.

Alecia Mercer, the mother of the younger Small's 3-year-old son, confirmed Monday that the Trenton, N.C., man was the donor of the infected organs. The same casualty officer who informed her of his death in September 2011 came to deliver the news at her Trenton home last week.

"It was kind of a deja-vu," she said, sitting on the front porch swing Monday with her son, Shane.

A year and a half ago, officials told Small's loved ones that he had died of food poisoning or a stomach virus. Now, they must live with the knowledge that one man is dead, and several others may have been infected.

"I was very suspicious over that," Alecia Mercer said of the initial cause of death she received from military officials. "At first they said it was poison from a fish, and he fished a lot. I knew he knew all types of fish."

Small went through basic training in Texas before going to Florida to train as an aviation mechanic.

Small, who was training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, visited a base clinic in August 2011 for abdominal pain and vomiting, Defense Department officials said. Four days later, he was transferred to a civilian hospital, where he died.

During a telephone call shortly before he became ill, Small had told his father he got sick after eating a puppy drum he'd caught in the Gulf of Mexico, but had gotten better. By the time his father heard of the relapse, the younger Small was on a respirator.

The organs were offered for transplant by LifeQuest Organ Recovery Services of Gainesville, Fla., said Kathy Giery, the group's director of donor program development.

Giery said the hospital's diagnosis at the time of death was that his illness was caused by food poisoning from ciguatera, a toxin sometimes found in large saltwater fish, including grouper, red snapper and sea bass. The Defense Department had said the donor died of severe stomach and intestinal inflammation with complications including dehydration and seizure. The Florida Department of Health has said he died of encephalitis ? a brain inflammation ? of unknown origin.

Giery said the donor ? an avid hunter and fisherman ? wasn't tested for rabies because his symptoms didn't raise a red flag for infection.

"There was no testing done for rabies at any point in the process because nobody suspected rabies," she said.

As the "host organ procurement organization," LifeQuest was responsible for the quality of the organs it offered when it posted their availability on a national database maintained by the United Network for Organ Sharing.

Giery said every donor program does extensive testing of every potential donor, but rabies isn't part of the routine screening, partly because human cases are so rare. It causes just one to three deaths a year in the United States, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Federal guidelines published last year for evaluating organ donors with encephalitis urge "extreme caution" if the suspected cause is a viral pathogen, such as rabies. Giery said those guidelines weren't in place when the organs were offered in 2011.

"For our cases today and going forward, I think everyone would be looking at this through a different lens," she said.

When a Maryland man who had received one of Small's kidneys in 2011 died last week of rabies, further testing revealed Small had the infection. His heart, liver and another kidney went to recipients in Florida, Georgia and Illinois; those recipients started getting the vaccine this month, and none has rabies symptoms.

Neither William Small nor Mercer ever heard Will Small speak of being bitten by an animal during one of his many forays into the woods.

Small and Alecia Mercer met at Jones High School, where he was a year ahead of her. Small was 17 when he dropped out of high school, but got his GED at the local community college, his father said.

"It was something he knew he had to do, one way or the other," the father said. "So he did it."

Mercer said Small was kind to her at first, but changed. Her mother said Small didn't want to support his child.

Katie Small said her brother had a "pretty good relationship" with his son before he left for basic training, and he and Mercer went their separate ways.

"He was funny, outgoing," she said. "He was great with children. I have three girls, and he was perfect with them. He was smart. He had a good head on his shoulders. He may have messed around and done some crazy things, but he was an all-around great person, the kind that any girl would take home to momma. He was sweet and loving and just perfect."

Despite their differences, Alecia Mercer said Small wanted to do right, which is why he joined the Air Force.

"He kept on saying he wanted to do it for Shane," she said. "I think it was to set an example."

The single-wide mobile home in Trenton that Small and his father shared sits on the site of their former wood-frame home, which was torn down. The son's room is devoid of furniture, but the pelts of three raccoons, a beaver and a grey fox he trapped or shot hang on the wall, along with an unframed baby photo of Small's son.

Fishing rods stand in the corner.

The elder Small, a military police officer in the Air Force for more than five years, said his son would be mortified to know that his final gift had brought death to some other family.

"He put his heart in everything he tried to do," he said, his voice cracking with emotion. "No father should have to bury their child. It's not right to bury your child."

He said he feels horrible for the family of the dead man.

"But then, too, looking back on the other part," he said through his tears, "there are three people still alive because of him."
