Melco Crown to develop $1bn casino in Manila | Innovate Gaming

  • Casino Business | 28th June, 2012 | Hong Kong | Pagcor Entertainment City ? Video
  • Macau casino operator Melco Crown Entertainment is set to enter the prosperous Philippines market by partnering with local property developer Belle Corp., controlled by the country?s richest man Henry Sy. The deal will see the company develop a $1 billion casino resort at Manila Bay.

Pagcor City, Manila BayThe deal will intensify competition in the Manila gaming industry, where the Philippine government and state-owned gambling authority PAGCOR is set to develop a casino strip and launch a new era of gambling to the Philippines.

Henry Sy?s SM Investments Corp. invests in Belle Corp. as one of its portfolio investments. The company is the most dominant player in the Philippine?s retail market.

Belle Corp. is one of four companies licensed to develop casinos in the Manila Bay area and has almost completed construction of the us$1 billion casino resort. The company is in talks with Melco Crown to operate the property?s casino, but nothing has been finalised said Vice Chairman Willy Ocier on Wednesday.

?A partnership with a seasoned and experienced foreign player will give this venture an edge and turn it into a better contender,? said Richard Laneda, Analyst at Manila-based CitisecOnline.com, ?This partnership will make SM?s casino investment more promising.?

Melco Crown is a joint venture between Australian casino mogul James Packer and Lawrence Ho, the company?s CEO and son to ?The King of Gambling? Stanley Ho. Recently listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange, Melco is looking to expand through Asia with properties that use a gaming element to fund integrated entertainment facilities.

Each casino project requires a minimum investment of $1bn that can be spread over 5 years. The other concessionaires are Bloomberry Resorts, owned by local ports tycoon Enrique Razon; a joint venture between Malaysian casino company Genting Hong Kong and Philippine conglomerate Alliance Global Group; and Universal Entertainment, a pachinko company run by Japan?s Kazuo Okada.

The state is looking to build Manila into a gaming hotspot, ahead of Japan and Vietnam attracting casino operators to capitalise on the intensifying Asian market. The Philippines wants to develop gaming as one of the city?s core pillars of tourism, according to Jorge Sarmiento, COO of Pagcor.

Three cardinal rules of mobile computing

    Michael Lasky

Whether it?s notebooks, tablets, phones, peripherals, or even software, we want three things from our mobile tools: they must be light, fast, and intuitive to use.

Here is a quartet of products that meet those rules for the road.

Thin and light ? and bigger ? portable PC

To fulfill the rule of lighter-faster-easier, Lenovo?s ThinkPad T430s (info page) starts with a carbon fiber?reinforced chassis that helps pare its weight down to just 4.2 pounds. For a 14-inch display notebook, that?s light! In addition, the T430s is equipped with Lenovo?s proprietary RapidBoot technology, which gives it a perceptibly faster Windows 7 Professional boot up than typically seen on many other Win7 machines. And if you?re into cutting-edge qualities, this portable has an optional Windows 8?like interface that launches applications and utilities with a single click. (See Figure 1.)

    Optional Lenovo startup screen

Figure 1. The T430s comes with an optional startup screen that's reminiscent of the forthcoming Windows 8.

An inch thick, the T430s includes a lithium-ion battery that delivered nearly five hours of power in my informal tests ? enough time to watch Avatar and get some work done, too. Watching the movie was visually pleasing on my review unit. It came with a crisp, 1600?900 HD display (a 1366?768 display knocks U.S. $50 off the standard price) driven by an optional Nvidia NVS 5400M graphics card with 1GB VRAM ($330 extra).

Most laptops and Ultrabooks have reduced size and weight by eliminating built-in optical drives. However, that?s a problem when you want to load applications or grab a movie out of Redbox. The T430s includes a DVD/CD multiburner, adding a bit to its weight and thickness. However, it?s good to have the option. You can also order a second battery that slips into the drive bay for extended power.

On the other hand, you?ll want a good set of headphones when watching movies or listening to music ? Lenovo has put two mediocre speakers on either side of the keyboard.

    Lenovo T430s

    Figure 2. Lenovo's light and fast T430s

Going back to the days when IBM held the brand, ThinkPads have always sported the best notebook keyboards ? bar none. So why, oh why did Lenovo switch to the island-style (or chiclet) keyboard for the T430s? Although still comfortable with providing great feedback, the key spacing guarantees mistypes galore. I know, I know. You just have to get used to it, but it?s a pity that Lenovo had to ?improve? on keyboard perfection to satisfy obvious MacBook envy.

Google unveils Project Glass Explorer Edition, takes preordes only at Google IO

We've been wondering when non-Googlers could get their hands on Project Glass in earnest, and now we know: the company is opening up pre-orders for Glass Explorer Edition, a developer version of its heads-up display glasses. How much it's changed from the prototypes isn't yet known, but Google has said that it's been steadily working on refining the hardware along with the software. Sadly, the first crack at the wearable technology isn't coming to the broader masses just yet. Orders are only available to Google I/O attendees, and they cost a pretty hefty $1,500 for their release sometime next year.

of resources and honing focus within the Company on areas that have

the greatest opportunities,? said Thorsten Heins, President and CEO.

?Our top priority going forward is the successful launch of our first

BlackBerry 10 device, which we now anticipate will occur in the first

quarter of calendar 2013.??In parallel with the roll out of

BlackBerry 10, we are aggressively working with our advisors on our

strategic review and are actively evaluating ways to better leverage

our assets and build on our strengths, including our growing

BlackBerry subscriber base of approximately 78 million, our large

enterprise installed base, our unique network architecture and our

    industry leading security capabilities.?

    ?

The total of cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term

investments was $2.2 billion as of June 2, 2012, compared to $2.1

billion at the end of the previous quarter, an increase of

approximately $100 million from the prior quarter. Cash flow from

operations in Q1 was approximately $710 million.??Uses of cash

included intangible asset additions of approximately $285 million,

capital expenditures of approximately $155 million and a business

    acquisition of approximately $100 million.

    ?

    BlackBerry 10 Update

    ?

The successful launch of the BlackBerry 10 platform and the delivery

of high quality, full-featured BlackBerry 10 smartphones remain the

Company?s number one priority. Over the past several weeks, RIM?s

software development teams have made major progress in the

development of key features for the BlackBerry 10 platform; however,

the integration of these features and the associated large volume of

code into the platform has proven to be more time consuming than

anticipated. As a result, the Company now expects to launch the first

BlackBerry 10 smartphones in market in Q1 of calendar 2013.

    ?

?RIM?s development teams are relentlessly focussed on ensuring the

quality and reliability of the platform and I will not compromise the

product by delivering it before it is ready. I am confident that the

first BlackBerry 10 smartphones will provide a ground-breaking next

generation smartphone user experience,? said Thorsten Heins,

President and CEO. ?We are encouraged by the traction that the

BlackBerry 10 platform is gaining with application developers and

content partners following the successful BlackBerry Jam sessions

that we have held around the world since the beginning of May.

Similarly, the reception of the BlackBerry 10 platform by our key

carrier partners has been very positive and they are looking forward

to going to market with BlackBerry 10 smartphones in the first

    quarter of calendar 2013.?

    ?

    Organizational Update

    ?

RIM today also announced the appointment of Steve Zipperstein, former

General Counsel of Verizon Wireless, as its Chief Legal Officer.

Prior to joining Verizon, Mr. Zipperstein previously served as Deputy

General Counsel for GTE Corporation and was employed with the United

States Department of Justice as a federal prosecutor. Mr. Zipperstein

joins Kristian Tear, Chief Operating Officer and Frank Boulben, Chief

Marketing Officer as the latest additions to RIM?s executive

    management team.

    ?

    CORE Program

    ?

The Company announced its CORE (Cost Optimization and Resource

Efficiency) program in March of this year. The program is focused on

delivering operational savings through various initiatives, with

financial objectives for the program targeted to drive at least $1

billion in savings by the end of fiscal 2013, based on RIM?s Q4

FY2012 run rate. As a result of the shift in BlackBerry 10 launch

timeline, the increasingly competitive environment, as well as the

identification of additional cost saving and efficiency

opportunities, the Company may increase the scope and magnitude of

these programs, and considers these original estimates as minimum

    numbers it will be pursuing.

    ?

To date, the Company has started implementing a number of these

    initiatives including:

    ?

    *T

    ?

???a reduction in the number of layers of management to drive better

    clarity, efficiency and accountability across the organization;

???the continued streamlining of our supply chain, which includes the

consolidation of our manufacturing footprint from 10 external

manufacturing sites to three, and working closely with our suppliers and

    other partners to identify ways to drive further efficiency;

???outsourcing key parts of the Company?s Global Repair operations,

    including management of device level repairs;

???targeted use of resources in our sales and marketing initiatives to more

effectively leverage marketing windows and prioritize our marketing

efforts and spend in regions that offer the highest opportunity and

    return;

???further outsourcing of non-core functions as determined during the

implementation of the CORE program; and

???a global workforce reduction of approximately 5,000 employees, which is

expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2013.

    ?

    *T

    ?

The Company expects to incur restructuring related charges of

approximately $350 million by the end of fiscal 2013, primarily

associated with the global workforce reduction.?? Other charges and

cash costs may occur during this process, and the Company intends to

share more details throughout the year regarding its progress as

programs are implemented or changes are completed.

    ?

    Outlook

    ?

The Company expects the next several quarters to continue to be very

challenging for its business based on the increasing competitive

environment, lower handset volumes, potential financial and other

impacts from the delay of BlackBerry 10, pressure to reduce RIM?s

monthly infrastructure access fees, and the Company?s plans to

continue to aggressively drive sales of BlackBerry 7 handheld

devices.??The Company expects to report an operating loss in the

second quarter of fiscal 2013, as RIM continues to invest in

marketing programs and continues to work through the transition to

BlackBerry 10, as well as the Company?s fixed costs being allocated

over a lower volume of shipments. This outlook excludes the impact of

charges related to the CORE Program.

Note: Adjusted net loss and adjusted diluted loss per share do not

have a standardized meaning prescribed by GAAP and thus are not

comparable to similarly titled measures presented by other issuers.

The Company believes that the presentation of adjusted net loss and

adjusted diluted loss per share enables the Company and its

shareholders to better assess RIM?s operating results relative to its

operating results in prior periods and improves the comparability of

the information presented. Investors should consider these non-GAAP

measures in the context of RIM?s GAAP results.

    ?

    (1) During the first quarter of fiscal 2013, the Company performed a

goodwill impairment test and based on the results of that test, the

Company recorded a pre-tax goodwill impairment charge of

approximately $335 million, or $326 million after tax.

Kitchen Style for the Serious Cook | At Home with Kim Vallee

functional English style kitchen prep and cooking areas
    photo:?Deulonder Domestic Architecture?(kitchen 1)

You see plenty of pretty kitchens in magazines and online. Unfortunately, some kitchens are more beautiful than useful. I am interested by kitchens that are practical and beautiful. I found several ideas when I looked at the portfolio of Deulonder Domestic Architecture. They are?is a Spanish interior design studio that cater to passionate cooks. Their kitchens fill the needs of people who really cook in their kitchen and who love to have guests over while they cook.

One common denominator in their design is how they juxtapose three main areas: the kitchen, the dining room and the butler?s pantry/serving area.

    The English Home Restaurant-Style Kitchen

functional English style kitchen with a banquette dining room
    photo:?Deulonder Domestic Architecture?(kitchen 1)

This is unusual kitchen and dining room layout works if you like to entertain or have a large family.?The kitchen itself is a mix between a galley-style kitchen and a L-shaped plan. Deulonder?imagined a kitchen for a large family living on the outskirts of London or Boston.?Let?s look at the ideas to steal in this stunning kitchen and dining area designed by?Deulonder?for?Casa Decor Barcelona 2011.

    functional English style kitchen
    photo:?Deulonder Domestic Architecture?(kitchen 1)

For one thing, the fact that the kitchen/ prep / serving areas are wrapped around the dining room means that you can hire staff without?jeopardizing?the intimate mood of your dinner.

Secondly, you have to admire the efficiency of this kitchen.?It is equipped for serious cooking. You have one big sink per prep area; which means you are never on someone else toes. There is a?two-oven, four burner Viking stove with a grill and a?teppanyaki. And there are plenty of the storage shelves or holes to store your large platters and baking sheets! I?m jealous!

functional English style kitchen view from the kitchen
    photo:?Deulonder Domestic Architecture?(kitchen 1)

The third great feature are the glass walls. Without them, the dining room would be very dark. On a bright sunny day, I imagine myself serving brunch in winter and feeling warm. Another advantage is that they cook can see what is happening with the diners. If you need to keep a wall divides your dining room from your kitchen, you could examine how you can?incorporate?a big window inside your wall.

If you are still convinced that it is an amazing space, look at this view from the dining room.

Here a wine pantry is located between the kitchen and the terrace. You can bypass the wine pantry to access the terrace from the kitchen.?This means that you can prepare your wine service out of sight and keep everything at the right temperature if you lounge outside.

Crisis? Germans savor sunshine as euro storm blows

HANOVER, Germany (Reuters) - For his fellow Germans, explains businessman Roland Frobel, the euro crisis is a hurricane that may have been spotted on the horizon but has yet to blow in.

"The storm is coming, everybody knows that, but the lightning has not struck yet," said the chief financial officer of Rossmann, one of Germany's largest health and beauty retail chains, at its headquarters near the northern city of Hanover.

From where he is standing, it is hard to imagine sunnier economic weather. His firm has recently created nearly 3,000 new jobs in Germany and abroad - where it has been expanding in non-euro zone countries such as Poland and Turkey - and expects its sales this year to rise by nearly 12 percent from 2011.

"The feeling of looming crisis that people have is still vague, undefined," said Frobel. "And you see this in their continued willingness to go out and buy. Their readiness to consume is holding up well."

Hanover, a bustling industrial and trading hub on the fertile plain of northern Germany, is a world away from the recession engulfing Greece, Spain and other parts of Europe.

Life, for Germans, is as it should be. Unemployment is at 20-year lows. Exports are at record levels. The national soccer squad has predictably been storming from one victory to the next in the Euro 2012 championship.

German consumer morale actually rose going into July, a key survey by GfK market research group showed this week, on hopes of higher wages, though it also revealed greater pessimism about the economic outlook due to the euro crisis.

People are well aware that everything could suddenly change for the worse if the crisis affecting their neighbors finally blows in.

"In Germany there is no crisis. But that could change very fast. The euro is unloved and we miss the deutschmark," pensioner Paul Majer, 76, said as he strolled with his wife around the cobbled streets of Hanover's old town.

    CULTURE CLASH

Like many Germans, he blames those in southern countries for putting Germany's hard-won prosperity at risk by failing to enact the sort of austerity measures Germany endured when the euro arrived and wages were held down to keep it competitive.

"I don't believe things will stay OK for much longer. The euro zone is too diverse. They say we Germans live to work while the Mediterranean cultures work to live," Majer said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel will be under unprecedented pressure at a European Union summit this week to pledge more of German taxpayers' cash to rescue the euro. Her countrymen, including the burghers of Hanover, are having none of it.

"Greece should not get any more money, it is a bottomless pit. The strong countries cannot prop up the weak ones forever. Germany is just not strong enough to do that," said taxi driver Kurt Ringling, 65.

A city of 500,000 people, Hanover is a good place to take the pulse of 'middle Germany' because of its central location and a diverse economy that includes major manufacturers such as Continental and Volkswagen, insurance firms and tour operator TUI. It is also home to the world's biggest trade fair.

"Unemployment here fell again last month. The unions have secured wage increases. Many firms are doing relatively well, both the big industrial firms that rely on exports but also the 'Mittelstand'," said mayor Stephan Weil, referring to Germany's often family-owned small and medium-sized businesses.

"But many people look with anxiety at Europe, especially those countries in big financial difficulty like Greece and Spain. Many people in Hanover know the countries from having spent holidays there or have friends and acquaintances here who have come here from those countries," he said.

    PATIENCE WEARING THIN

The storm clouds of the crisis are slowly arriving. Local newspapers have reported the introduction of short-time working at factories belonging to leading automotive suppliers Continental and Johnson Controls in the Hanover area because of crumbling demand in key European markets.

Psychologist Manon Rossmanik, 35, said she did not feel the euro crisis in her own life but said there were growing signs of people preparing for the worst.

"Real estate prices are going up. People want to protect their savings by buying property, tangible things," she said, clutching a wad of estate agency brochures.

That sense of alarm prods Germans to stand by Merkel and her firm insistence that other euro zone countries accept their austerity "medicine" before receiving aid.

"Germans' patience is wearing thin - in fact, there's none left. We sometimes have the impression Europe can only exist by being on the German payroll," said Wolfgang Nowak, head of the Alfred Herrhausen Society, a think-tank run by Deutsche Bank.

"The German national mood is very anti-bailout... We want Merkel to be a good Swabian housewife," he said, invoking a popular German image of penny-pinching prudence.

At the site of the annual Hanover trade fair, which has its roots in the postwar reconstruction that gave rise to Germany's 'Wirtschaftswunder' (economic miracle), the mood remains upbeat.

Some 5,000 firms, about half of them German, exhibited at this year's fair in April. Many of them Chinese, a sign of Germany's success in exporting beyond the euro zone to high-growth Asian markets. Premier Wen Jiabao visited with Merkel.

The euro zone stayed largely in the background, said Wolfram von Fritsch, chairman of the board of Deutsche Messe which runs the trade fairs.

German exporters had proven their resilience by bouncing back strongly from the 2008-09 global financial crisis, he said. He, too, reached for a weather metaphor to describe how German businesses were locating markets in temperate climes.

"The euro crisis is seen as a kind of natural disaster. Like rain or snow, it is something we can't change, so let's just focus on our main business."

Neal Asbury Entrepreneur Extraordinaire and Host of the nationally ...

Neal Asbury Entrepreneur Extraordinaire and Host of the nationally syndicated show Made in America
    Tell us about yourself
After graduating from Rowan State University in New Jersey with a Bachelor of Arts degree, I was drawn to the idea of world commerce. So I moved to Asia in to represent the interests of a number of U.S. manufacturers throughout the region.? It was here that I found my passion for exporting and for the world of entrepreneurship.
This led me to found Asbury WorldWide, which became the largest American Export Management Company in its segment, with twelve distribution facilities around the globe.? After selling this group of companies, I established Greenfield World Trade, a global Trading Company selling and servicing American manufactured products in over 100 countries to both the retail and commercial markets. Today, that company has become The Legacy Companies, which includes J. Cobo (a distribution company with operations throughout Latin America); General (a manufacturer of food preparation equipment); Zeroll (a manufacturer of high end kitchen gadgets) and Omega (a manufacturer of electrical kitchen appliances).
I consider it part of my mission to encourage more American manufacturers to explore exporting, to not only increases their own business but add to America?s leadership in global trade.

I have been fortunate that my support for U.S. exporting and free trade resulted in being named the 2008 recipient of the coveted United States National Champion Exporter of the Year Award.? Through my advocacy, I host ?Made in America,? a weekly radio showthat promotes U.S. commerce.? I also write a weekly column for Newsmax on topics relevant to entrepreneurs. I also am a frequent guest on national network and cable shows I have received the E-Star Export Award and the Export Achievement Award from the U.S. Department of Commerce, and I am a founding faculty member of Export University (a collaboration between the District Export Council and the U.S. Department of Commerce).? I am chairman of the Export University National Oversight Committee, and vice chairman of the District Export Council National Steering Committee appointed to serve by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.

Why have your written this book?
When the U.S. trades with another nation, it?s not only about the exchange of money.?? The best trading partners are those that are stable so long-term relationships can be forged.? The quality of the goods is important, but so is the political behavior of its leaders, the way its people are treated, the way it protects the environment, and whether they trade fairly and honestly. We are ambassadors when we interact with other countries and should take every opportunity to instill a vision for American values and freedoms. I have made it my mission to promote American products to world markets and to fight against the inequities practiced by our trading partners with impunity against American manufacturers.

I don?t think people understand that a sound free trade policy must have benefits and incentives for both parties.? So the title ?Conscientious Equity? fits, because it?s the right thing to do, and then ?equity? ? because we all have ownership in doing the right thing.? The idea is there is a way for all good people to do business freely and fairly, and my book provides insights into these ideas.

Who should read your book and why?
Entrepreneurialism combined with free and fair trade can be the driving force towards a world that all good people want and would be proud to live in.? After reading Conscientious Equity, I hope to instill in readers the confidence to explore world markets to grow their business and advance American principles.

Tell us more about yourself ? How long have you been writing and what are your plans for the future as an author?
I have been publishing opinion pieces in leading newspapers and magazines for many years, and I realized that I had more to share.? So I built a relationship with an agent and publisher that encouraged me to write about my passion for free trade and entrepreneurship.?? I know that I have more to say, but right now, my obligations as CEO of The Legacy Companies is a priority.

What would you like to say to whoever is reading this right now?
I hope you?ll take my message to heart.?? For America to continue to be beacon of hope for the world,? our future rests with small businesses and entrepreneurs willing to take the risk and explore global free enterprise.? I hope the resolve of my readers will be fired up to join the global export community.?? It is the foundation of wealth and of our heritage as Americans.
