Web portal Sina posts $336 million quarterly loss (AP)

BEIJING ? Sina Corp., a popular Chinese web portal operator, sank to a loss in the latest quarter due to writedowns on investments in two online businesses but revenues and microblog traffic were up.

The Beijing-based company said Wednesday it lost $336.3 million for the three months ended Sept. 30, or $5.10 per share. Revenue rose 20 percent from a year earlier to $130.3 million.

Sina said most of the loss was due to its decision to write down the value of investments in China Real Estate Information Corp. and online clothing retailer Mecox Lane Ltd. by a total of $281.2 million.

Advertising revenue rose 25 percent to $101 million.

Sina's popular microblog, Weibo.com, has seen "rapid growth of new users," CEO Charles Chao said in a statement. He gave no details.

"Our focus now turns to adding more social networking features to Weibo to increase user stickiness," Chao said.

China has the world's most populous Internet market with more than 485 million people online as of the end of June.

Nook Tablet expected to be unveiled Monday (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap) ? When Amazon unveiled its first tablet, the Kindle Fire, in September, most tech experts and analysts predicted it would be the first real challenger to Apple's iPad.

Now, before the Kindle Fire has even debuted, Engadget is reporting that a familiar foe is also entering the tablet market -- Barnes & Noble.

The company has invited journalists and analysts to a news conference in New York November 7, where everyone expects Barnes & Noble to unveil the Nook Tablet.

As of now, the Nook is an e-reader, but one with a lot of different versions. Some are black and white, some are color, some offer Internet access and others don't.

The tablet is expected to be a lot like the Nook Color Reader, though one would expect there to be some more features.

Like the Kindle Fire, this tablet seems to be reusing a popular brand name - Nook - and will have a seven-inch screen.

According to various tech blogs, it will be priced at $249 -- $50 more than the Kindle Fire.

(AP) ? Andy Rooney, the curmudgeonly commentator who spent more than 30 years wryly talking about the oddities of life for the TV news magazine "60 Minutes," died Friday night, CBS said. He was 92.

Just a month ago, Rooney delivered his last regular essay on the CBS news magazine.

CBS said he died Friday night in New York from complications from a recent surgery.

Rooney, also a syndicated newspaper columnist, talked about what was in the news. But he was just as likely to use his weekly television essay to discuss the old clothes in his closet, why banks need to have important-sounding names or whether there was a real Mrs. Smith who made Mrs. Smith's Pies.

He won four Emmy Awards, including one for his story revealing there was no Mrs. Smith.

Rooney began his "60 Minutes" commentaries in 1978 and was still at it three decades later, railing about how unpleasant air travel had become. "Let's make a statement to the airlines just to get their attention. We'll pick a week next year and we'll all agree not to go anywhere for seven days," he told viewers.

"I obviously have a knack for getting on paper what a lot of people have thought and didn't realize they thought," Rooney once said. "And they say, 'Hey, yeah!' And they like that."

For many years, "60 Minutes" improbably was the most popular program on U.S. television and a dose of Rooney was what Americans came to expect for a knowing smile on the night before they had to go back to work.

In early 2009, as he was about to turn 90, he looked ahead to Barack Obama's upcoming inauguration with a look at past inaugurations. He told viewers that Calvin Coolidge's 1925 swearing-in was the first to be broadcast on radio, adding, "That may have been the most interesting thing Coolidge ever did."

"Words cannot adequately express Andy's contribution to the world of journalism and the impact he made ? as a colleague and a friend ? upon everybody at CBS," said Leslie Moonves, CBS Corp. president and CEO.

Jeff Fager, CBS News chairman and "60 Minutes" executive producer, said "it's hard to imagine not having Andy around. He loved his life and he lived it on his own terms. We will miss him very much."

"60 Minutes" will end its broadcast Sunday with a tribute to Rooney by veteran correspondent Morley Safer.

For his final essay, Rooney said that he'd live a life luckier than most.

"I wish I could do this forever. I can't, though," he said.

He said he probably hadn't said anything on "60 Minutes" that most of his viewers didn't already know or hadn't thought. "That's what a writer does," he said. "A writer's job is to tell the truth."

True to his occasional crotchety nature, though, he complained about being famous or bothered by fans. His last wish from fans: If you see him in a restaurant, just let him eat his dinner.

"Andy always said he wanted to work until the day he died, and he managed to do it, save the last few weeks in the hospital," said his "60 Minutes" colleague, correspondent Steve Kroft.

Rooney was a freelance writer in 1949 when he encountered CBS radio star Arthur Godfrey in an elevator and ? with the bluntness millions of people learned about later ? told him his show could use better writing. Godfrey hired him and by 1953, when he moved to TV, Rooney was his only writer.

He wrote for CBS' Garry Moore during the early 1960s before settling into a partnership with Harry Reasoner at CBS News. Given a challenge to write on any topic, he wrote "An Essay on Doors" in 1964, and continued with contemplations on bridges, chairs and women.

"The best work I ever did," Rooney said. "But nobody knows I can do it or ever did it. Nobody knows that I'm a writer and producer. They think I'm this guy on television."

Rooney angrily left CBS in 1970 when it refused to air his heated essay about the Vietnam War. He went on TV for the first time, reading the essay on PBS and winning a Writers Guild of America award for it.

He returned to CBS three years later as a writer and producer of specials. Notable among them was the 1975 "Mr. Rooney Goes to Washington," whose lighthearted but serious look at government won him a Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting.

Looking for something new to punctuate its weekly broadcast, "60 Minutes" aired its first Rooney commentary on July 2, 1978. He complained about people who keep track of how many people die in car accidents on holiday weekends. In fact, he said, the Fourth of July is "one of the safest weekends of the year to be going someplace."

The segment of Rooney's musings quickly became a favorite feature of television's oldest and most successful newsmagazine. Comic Joe Piscopo satirized Rooney's squeaky voice with the refrain, "Did you ever wonder ..." Rooney never started any of his essays that way.

His words sometimes landed Rooney in hot water. CBS suspended him for three months in 1990 for making racist remarks in an interview, which he denied. Rooney, who was arrested in Florida while in the Army in the 1940s for refusing to leave a seat among blacks on a bus, was hurt deeply by the charge of racism.

Gay rights groups were mad, during the AIDS epidemic, when Rooney mentioned homosexual unions in saying "many of the ills which kill us are self-induced." Indians protested when Rooney suggested Native Americans who made money from casinos weren't doing enough to help their own people.

The Associated Press learned the danger of getting on Rooney's cranky side. In 1996, AP television writer Frazier Moore wrote a column suggesting it was time for Rooney to leave the broadcast. On Rooney's next "60 Minutes" appearance, he invited those who disagreed to make their opinions known. The AP switchboard was flooded by some 7,000 phone calls.

"Your piece made me mad," Rooney told Moore two years later. "One of my major shortcomings ? I'm vindictive. I don't know why that is. Even in petty things in my life I tend to strike back. It's a lot more pleasurable a sensation than feeling threatened."

He was one of television's few voices to strongly oppose the war in Iraq. After the fall of Baghdad in April 2003, he said he was chastened by its quick fall but didn't regret his "60 Minutes" commentaries.

"I'm in a position of feeling secure enough so that I can say what I think is right and if so many people think it's wrong that I get fired, well, I've got enough to eat," Rooney said at the time.

Andrew Aitken Rooney was born on Jan. 14, 1919, in Albany, New York, and worked as a copy boy on the Albany Knickerbocker News while in high school. College at Colgate University was cut short by World War II, where Rooney worked for the GI newspaper Stars and Stripes. With another former Stars and Stripes staffer, Oram C. Hutton, Rooney wrote four books about the war. They included the 1947 book, "Their Conqueror's Peace: A Report to the American Stockholders," documenting offenses against the Germans by occupying forces.

Rooney and his wife, Marguerite, were married for 62 years before she died of heart failure in 2004. They had four children and lived in New York, with homes in Rowayton, Connecticut, and upstate New York. Daughter Emily Rooney is a former executive producer of ABC's "World News Tonight." Brian was a longtime ABC News correspondent, Ellen a photographer and Martha Fishel is chief of the public service division of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Robot spider crawls out of 3-D printer

A rescue robot must have the mobility and balance to go where humans cannot, such as under the rubble of an earthquake-stricken city or inside the site of a nuclear reactor disaster. One of the best contenders has emerged in the shape of a jumping spider that bears an eerie resemblance to Mother Nature's own creepy crawlies.

The robot moves around as a real spider would by keeping four legs on the ground at all times while the other four prepare for the next step. Such mobility comes from combining rigid parts with an elastic body ? a design that also allowed German researchers to create the robot spiders inexpensively by using 3-D printing.

"Our robot is so cheap to produce that it can be discarded after being used just once ? like a disposable rubber glove," said Ralf Becker, a scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation, in Stuttgart.

The spider robot's crawling and jumping abilities come from elastic drive bellows that act as joints. Instead of using muscles, the robot harnesses built-up body pressure to pump fluid into its legs to extend them. Bending the front pairs of legs pulls the robot spider along, and stretching its rear legs pushes it forward.

The current models have a control unit, valves and compressor pump in their body. In a disaster scenario, they could also carry video cameras, measuring devices and sensors to transmit information back to their human overseers.

The German team used 3-D printing to build up their robotic marvels layer by layer. During the process, a laser beam guided by a computer melts thin layers of polyamide powder to create the robot parts from the bottom up.

Such economic manufacturing allows the robotics researchers to almost effortlessly make modifications for new models. "We can ... produce one or even several legs in a single operation; this minimizes assembly effort, saves materials and reduces the time it takes to build a robot," Becker said. "With the modular approach, individual parts can be quickly swapped as well."

A prototype of the robot is scheduled to appear in Frankfurt at the EuroMold 2011 trade fair? (in Hall 11, Stand C66) from Nov. 29 through Dec. 2.

Cancer Causing Premature Deaths | TopNews United States

We all grieve over the sudden death of our loved ones. But have you ever tried to know what is causing the sudden death of people. A recent research has found that 40% of the deaths occurring prematurely result from cancer.

Cancer is the most deadly disease in the whole world. Any person irrespective of age and sex is vulnerable to developing cancer. There are various types of cancer like lung cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, brain cancer and many more. In most of the cases, faulty lifestyle triggers cancer. For example a person with sedentary lifestyle is at higher risk of developing prostate cancer. Similarly, a person with unhealthy lifestyle is at the risk of developing lung cancer.

It has been found that majority of premature deaths occurs due to lethal lung cancer. According to the data revealed by the Cancer Research UK, lung cancer accounts to deaths of about 35,000 people every year. Next to lung cancer, bowel cancer and breast cancer cause 16,000 and 11,700 deaths, respectively.

There is no doubt that with the advancement in treatment of cancer, mortality rate has reduced significantly but there is still a need to tackle with the premature deaths occurring due to cancer. Professor Peter Johnson from Cancer Research UK said, "We have had great success in reducing the death rate from many types of cancer in the last decade. But far too many people are still dying from this devastating disease and we clearly have much more work to do".

Acknowledging the findings of the research, the Department of Health noted that addition funding of ?750 million is required to be made in the coming four years so that people could be diagnosed with cancer at an early stage. Early diagnosis will no doubt help in preventing premature deaths.
