Genius.box wants to put a different experiment on your doorstep every month

Geniusbox wants to put a different experiment on your doorstep every month

There are a lot of things you can have delivered to your home on a monthly basis: magazines, hot sauces, underwear and beer are just a few. The second place winner at the Husky Startup Challenge, genius.box, takes that basic concept but replaces the Fruit of the Looms with simple to perform science experiments. Aimed at children between the ages of eight and 12, the projects inside each package teach a basic lesson in science, technology, engineering or math through a hands-on experience. All of the materials needed for each experiment are included, along with a lesson plan, instructions and "factoid" cards with tidbits of interesting trivia, such as the number of elements on the periodic scale.

The two boxes trotted out for demo day by creators Kate Pipa and Shivangi Shah covered the science and technology portions of the STEM equation. One was a kitchen chemistry set for growing crystals and the other a simple electronics kit, based partially around parts of a Snap Circuits set, that has kids building an electromagnet and lighting up an LED. This isn't exactly a return to hardcore chemistry sets of the past (you'll find no radioactive materials or poisons in here), but it's certainly a step in the right direction for an America whose love affair with science is on the rocks. Every four weeks a child would get a whole new educational playset for the target price of $20 a month. Which is quite a bit cheaper than your standard chemistry set or electronics kit. To be kept in the loop as genius.box works to get off the ground, sign up at the more coverage link.

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

(AP) ? Senators finalizing a massive immigration bill are arguing over plans to boost visas for high-tech workers, Senate aides and industry officials say, with disputes flaring over how best to punish companies that train workers here only to ship them overseas.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who's taken the lead in pushing to crack down on outsourcing firms, also is seeking higher wages for workers brought in on the H-1B visas that go to specially skilled foreigners, aides and officials say. High-tech industry officials say his efforts risk punishing companies not involved in the abuses he's trying to target, and lawmakers including Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., are taking the other side.

The dispute comes as aides to four Democratic and four Republican senators have been racing to put the finishing touches on sweeping immigration legislation that would secure the border and grant eventual citizenship to 11 million people here illegally, while also allowing tens of thousands more high- and low-skilled workers into the country on new visa programs.

Aides worked into the evening Monday on the high-tech visa issue, and senators were to resume meeting in person Tuesday after returning to Washington from a two-week spring recess. They were hoping to complete their legislation this week, though next week may be looking more likely. The high-tech visa question loomed as one of a few remaining unsettled matters.

At issue is overwhelming demand from companies like Microsoft, Apple and Google for the H-1B visas, which are now capped at 65,000 annually, plus 20,000 more that are reserved for foreign workers who have earned an advanced degree from a U.S. university. On Friday, the Homeland Security Department announced that after less than a week of accepting applications, it already had received more requests than visas available for the 2014 budget year.

Faced with that demand, senators have contemplated lifting the cap to around 100,000, with the ability to go as high as 150,000, aides and officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations were ongoing, and they stressed the numbers remained in flux and no final decisions had been made.

Such an increase would be a win for the tech industry, which has boosted its lobbying muscle in Washington in recent years. On a related issue, the legislation also is likely to allow permanent U.S. residency to unlimited numbers of people who get advanced degrees in science, technology or math from U.S. universities.

But the proposal to increase H-1B visas is focusing attention on problems with the current system.

Daniel Costa, immigration policy analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank, said the top 10 companies with the most H-1B visas last year were all firms that bring workers here to work at lower cost than Americans would, then send them back home. Many are technology companies based in India.

"There need to be some major reforms before expansion happens," Costa said.

Senate negotiators have discussed fees and other penalties for companies that use large numbers of H-1B workers, including requiring those with more than 30 percent of their workforce made up of H-1B workers to pay higher wages than others, and those with more than 50 percent of H-1B workers to pay higher wages still. There would potentially be a prohibition against a company hiring more than 75 percent of its workers on H-1B visas. No such limit exists in current law.

But Durbin has been pushing to block companies from hiring any more than 50 percent of their workers on H-1B visas, aides and officials said. More problematically for U.S. firms, he also is pushing for higher wages, which industry officials contend could result in H-1B workers getting paid more than their American counterparts. And he's sought to push companies to make greater efforts to hire American workers first.

"Sen. Durbin has advocated for meaningful reforms of the H-1B visa program for years, and that hasn't changed in these negotiations," Durbin spokesman Max Gleischman said late Monday. "Any discussion of raising H-1B caps must also include protections for American workers and safeguards to ensure American jobs aren't being shipped overseas."

Scott Corley, executive director of Compete America, which represents high-tech companies including Google, Intel and Microsoft, said companies that are not heavily dependent on the H-1B visas shouldn't be subject to some of the new restrictions Durbin has advocated.

"If you believe these visas are somehow being exploited, who is more likely to exploit them?" Corley said. "There are tons and tons of people who apply for one or two of these visas every year, so you have to step back and say do we want to do this in a judicious way."

Tt eSports Competition Gaming Glove

When you're spending an hour or more focused on an intense PC game, your physical comfort becomes an important issue. Little things, like the feel of the mouse in your hand or the texture of a mousepad can become the very details that prevent you from getting in the zone, the distractions that cost you a match. So why buy a glove for your mouse hand? Perhaps you like your mousepad?like the Roccat Hiro?because it glides smoothly and offers more consistent sensor response, but hate the feel of the pebbled texture surface under your wrist. Or if your own pet peeves include wrist strain or sweaty palms, then you might want to consider the Tt eSports Competition Gaming Glove. Coming from the gaming division of ThermalTake, the Gaming Glove will only be worthwhile for a slim segment of the gaming community?but it will be a boon to those who need it.

Design
The Gaming Glove is a right-handed glove, designed to increase your overall comfort while mousing. It does this in two ways: First, the glove itself prevents any uncomfortable sweat build-up between your hand and the mouse. Second, the glove has some ergonomic features built in, providing not only short term comfort, but long term protection for your wrist.

The red and black glove has an unusual looking design. It's fingerless, but combines the first and second fingers into one. The result is that your fingers have no material between them when clicking and scrolling, preventing any sort of irritation. Also, between the second and third fingers and third and fourth fingers are two attached loops, which let you remove the glove quickly by pulling on them with your other hand.

The glove is made of several different materials?a red stretchable Lycra back, which provides a snug fit, but is also meant to allow hands large and small to fit into the glove. The fabric is also very thin, which helps keep things cool. On the palm side of the hand, the glove uses a matching red neoprene material, which cushions the hand. While this could get pretty warm, the fingerless design is augmented with perforated ventilation, so it's not much of an issue. Connecting the two sides are two types of black mesh; a light stretchy mesh between the fingers, and a heavier mesh around the wrist fabric providing structure and support.

Around the wrist of the glove is a black neoprene wrist strap with a Velcro enclosure, providing wrist support, much like a wrist brace. On the palm of the glove are two gel pads which both cushion the palm and provide further support to the hand when using a mouse.

Sizing on the glove is a little weird. Available for right-hand only, the glove is only available in one size. Tt eSports describes it thus "Circumference of the Hand is 22.86 cm (or 9 inches), suitable for most sizes." According to the tag inside the glove, that size is medium. On my own hand, the glove was snug, but not uncomfortably so, and it still lets my hand flex and move enough for all of my mousing and typing needs.

Performance
Though I went in with fairly low expectations, the gaming glove does do a few things right. For starters, the neoprene and Velcro wrist strap provides surprisingly good wrist support. The padded palm also makes it much more comfortable to rest your hand on your desk or mouse pad. Overall, my wrist did feel less overall fatigue after a long gaming session.

Though the goofy combined-finger design looks and feels strange at first, removing the fabric from between the first and second fingers does provide a bit more comfort when using the mouse. Unfortunately, this benefit is highlighted by the fact that the other separate fingers are a tad irritating?stitching irritates the skin, and the attached quick-removal loops exacerbate the problem. In the same vein, the tag for the gloves is attached just inside the wrist strap, and it tended to bunch and irritate my wrist.

The Tt eSports Gaming Glove initially struck me as one of those "competitive gaming" products that are more hype than substance, but after using it for a week and a half, I must admit, there is some benefit to be gained. If wrist strain or sweaty palms are concerns for you, then the Gaming Glove will help on both counts, and your win/loss ratio will likely improve because of it. On the other hand (pun not intended) unless you're noticeably uncomfortable mousing with your bare hand, it's not worth the money, or the hassling you'll get from the fashion police.

G-Technology shows off a Thunderbolt-powered dock with dual hard drive bays

G-Technology shows off a Thunderbolt-powered dock with dual hard drive bays

We have a feeling 4K is going to be a major theme at this year's NAB, which also means we'll be seeing a good deal of hardware that can actually handle such high-res content. Mostly, we're talking pro cameras and the like, but at least one company will be showing off some professional-grade hard drives -- after all, you're gonna need a solid storage solution to process those supersize files, right? G-Technology just introduced the "Evolution" family of products, the centerpiece of which is the G-Dock ev, a mini-tower with two hard drive modules and dual Thunderbolt connections. What you put in those hard drive slots is up to you: the company is offering both a 9.5mm 7,200RPM drive (rated for 136 MB/s transfers) and a beefier 15mm cartridge promising 250 MB/s. Once you choose your drives, you can arrange them in a RAID 1 configuration if redundancy is important, or RAID 0 for maximum speed.

What's more, each of the drives has a USB 3.0 socket on board, so if you needed to you could hand it to someone else in your office and let them grab whatever data they needed off the HDD. In any case, the dock will come standard with two 1GB, 9.5mm drives -- look for it next month, priced at $750 for the bundle. If you later need some additional cartridges, the 9.3mm G-Drive ev will cost either $150 or $200, depending on whether you want 500 gigs or a full terabyte. The bigger 15mm G-Drive ev Plus will go for $350 (it'll be sold with 1TB only). Lastly, G-Technology also announced the G-Drive Pro with a Thunderbolt port and claimed transfer speeds of 480 MB/s. That'll ship this summer for either $700 or $850, depending on whether you want 2TB or 4GB of storage. All that's in the PR after the break, along with an endorsement from Vincent Laforet himself. Must be good, right?

Windows Blue rumored to merge Windows Phone and Windows 8 into one product

With all this talk about the cord-cutting masses no longer wanting to subsidize TV channels they don't watch, it's a little surprising that one of the oldest, most widely available forms of TV is waning: over-the-air broadcast TV. Despite its attractive price of $0 per month and billions of advertising revenue, nobody ? including the broadcast networks, the tech companies that are out to disrupt them, and the cord-cutters and cord-nevers who hate cable ? is very enthusiastic about antennas. ...

Standard Digital News - Kenya : Civil Society: We will block pay talks

Updated 6 hrs 49 mins ago

By Ally Jamah and Edwin Cheserek

Nairobi, Kenya: ?Civil Society groups have vowed to go to court to block any direct negotiations between elected leaders and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission with regard to their salaries and allowances.

Speaking in Nairobi on Sunday as the leaders continue to pile pressure on SRC to hike their pay, the groups said the proposed negotiations with SRC are illegal.

?We state categorically that SRC is a constitutional commission and not a trade union or a market for collective bargaining. Once the commission has gazetted the salaries of State officers, no one can challenge that, not even in the courts because they have exercised their constitutional mandate,? said Morris Odhiambo, President of the National Civil Society Congress.

He added: ?SRC must not make the mistake of negotiating salaries with anybody since that will be acting unconstitutionally. That would also undermine its own independence of setting salaries.?

Tax arrears

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi said recently that the Parliamentary Service Commission is in talks with the SRC on the possibility of increasing MPs? pay.

Last year, NCSC secured a court order compelling MPs to pay all their tax arrears, which is being implemented by the Kenya Revenue Authority.

The Civil Society also called on the Serem team not to give in to pressure and intimidation by the leaders. Some MPs have threatened to disband SRC if it does not yield to their demands to scale up their ?demeaning salaries?.

Others want the Serem team to be sent packing through amending the SRC Act or quashing of the Gazette notice that fixed their salaries.

NCSC?s Suba Churchil said the threats to disband SRC exposed the leaders? ignorance about Constitution. He indicated that SRC cannot be disbanded or its mandate changed without a referendum.

He blamed the clamour for a pay rise among the leaders on the watering down of laws meant to vet leaders running for public office.

93% Zero Dark Thirty

All Critics (243) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (228) | Rotten (17) | DVD (2)

What's striking is the absence of triumphalism -- Bigelow doesn't shy away from showing the victims shot down in cold blood in the compound -- and we come away with the overwhelming sense that this has been a grim, dark episode in our history.

This is an instant classic.

Chastain makes Maya as vivid as a bloodshot eye. Her porcelain skin, delicate features and feminine attire belie the steel within.

No doubt Zero Dark Thirty serves a function by airing America's dirty laundry about detainee and torture programs, but in its wake, there's a crying need for a compassionate Coming Home to counter its brutal Deer Hunter.

While "Zero Dark Thirty" may offer political and moral arguing points aplenty, as well as vicarious thrills,as a film it's simply too much of a passable thing.

From the very first scenes of Zero Dark Thirty, director Kathryn Bigelow demonstrates why she is such a formidable filmmaker, as adept with human emotion as with visceral, pulse-quickening action.

Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty is a grueling masterpiece that captures the hunt for bin Laden with a daunting amount of realism and efficiency.

Slathered in controversy, Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty confidently and forcefully storms onto DVD with an admirable A/V transfer, only hindered by a paltry gathering of extras from Sony.

The direction by Kathryn Bigelow, who won Oscars for Best Film and Best Director in her previous film "The Hurt Locker," is fierce and focused...

Despite what those silly Oscars would have you believe, it was this movie, not Argo, that was the finest of 2012.

Indulges Cheneyian fantasies complete with the bad-movie scene of the prisoner's defiance: "You're just a garbage man in the corporation," shouts the Arab who needs a lesson in manners from the Ph.D. (in torture?) who is racking him.

Bigelow tells the story very well, very efficiently, but doesn't really say much about it, which is ironic given the response to the film in some quarters.

Kathryn Bigelow takes the procedural model and brushes away every unnecessary detail, leaving behind a heavy, blunt object of a film that is also hugely watchable, engrossing and, best of all... highly suspenseful.

Rotten Tomatoes notes that I agree with Tomatometer critics 80 percent of the time, but this is one of those times I have to part ways with them.

Bigelow has directed excellent movies before, but this deserves to be remembered as the film that established her as a master.

You can't deny that what Zero Dark Thirty sets out to do, it does excellently.

An exhilarating and compelling historical document worthy of praise.

Bigelow's latest proves a rewarding piece of filmmaking, one that, in its best moments at least, is as gripping and as troubling as anything the director's ever made.

Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal shape history -- those breaks, big and small, that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden -- into one of the finest fact-based thrillers since "All the President's Men."

Purely as cinematic exercise, Zero Dark Thirty is an exhilarating piece of work. But, beyond its for-the-times subject matter, the work does not linger whatsoever.

Zero Dark Thirty is interesting as opposed to enjoyable, intriguing as opposed to entertaining, and certainly less memorable than The Hurt Locker.

It's quite remarkable how Bigelow and Boal managed to take 12 years of information (including a conclusion that everyone knows) and packaged it into a coherent, intimate and intense movie.

We know the ending, yet remain mesmerized by familiar details, filmed with a harrowing sense of urgency. It's as close to being in the White House situation room that night, watching a closed-circuit broadcast, as anyone could expect.

The second half of the film IS the film.

Chemistry: Elusive mechanism of widely used click reaction revealed

Apr. 4, 2013 ? Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have illuminated the mechanism at the heart of one of the most useful processes in modern chemistry. A reaction that is robust and easy to perform, it is widely employed to synthesize new pharmaceuticals, biological probes, new materials and other products. But precisely how it works had been unclear since its invention at TSRI more than a decade ago.

"These new findings allow us to exert greater control of the reaction and make it faster and more efficient under the most challenging conditions," said chemist Valery Fokin, an associate professor at TSRI, who was principal investigator for the new study. "The reaction-tracking techniques we developed here also can be applied to the study of other complex processes, both chemical and biological."

The report, which sheds light on the reaction known as copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), appears on April 4, 2013 in Science Express, the advance online edition of the journal Science, and in the April 18, 2013 issue of the journal.

Classic Click Reaction

Fokin and his laboratory, and the laboratory of K. Barry Sharpless, a Nobel laureate and the W.M. Keck Professor of Chemistry at TSRI, reported the discovery of the CuAAC reaction in 2002. Danish researchers independently reported a similar reaction in the same year. The reaction involves the use of copper compounds to catalyze the linkage of two functional groups, a nitrogen-containing azide and a hydrocarbon alkyne, to make a stable five-membered heterocycle, 1,2,3-triazole. Azides and alkynes are small functional groups that can be easily introduced into a wide variety of structures using chemical or biological methods without interfering with normal biological processes.

The experimental simplicity and reliable performance of CuAAC under virtually all conditions, including in water and in the presence of oxygen, has made it a "go-to" method whenever covalent stitching of small human-made molecules or large biopolymers is needed, exemplified by protein and nucleic acid labeling, in vitro and in vivo imaging, drug synthesis and the forging of complex molecular architectures with surgical precision.

"Despite its many uses, the nature of the copper-containing reactive intermediates that are involved in the catalysis had not been well understood, in large part due to the promiscuous nature of copper, which rapidly engages in dynamic interactions with other molecules," said Fokin.

Previous studies had hinted that in the swirl of short-lived bondings and partings that occur during a given CuAAC reaction, not one but two copper-containing catalytic units -- "copper centers" -- are needed to help build the new triazole structure. To confirm this, Fokin and two of his graduate students, Brady Worrell and Jamal Malik, tried to reproduce key steps of the CuAAC catalytic cycle with either one or two copper atoms available. Analysis of the reaction course by tracking the heat given off by each reaction as well as product yield indicated whether it worked efficiently. "By monitoring the reaction in real time, we showed that both copper atoms are needed and established the involvement of copper-containing intermediates that could not be isolated or directly observed," said Worrell, who was the paper's first author.

In a second set of experiments, Worrell, Malik and Fokin introduced a pure isotope of copper -- which differs slightly in mass from the isotope blend found in natural copper -- as one of the two copper centers so that they could track their respective fates during the reaction. "We hypothesized that the two copper centers would have distinct roles, but found unexpectedly that their functions during key steps in the reaction are effectively interchangeable," said Malik.

New Linkages

The research reveals the popular CuAAC reaction in unprecedented detail. In addition to the fundamental insights into the chemistry of copper and its interactions with organic molecules, the techniques will lead to better understanding of many chemical and biological processes involving copper. The current study also enables development of new reactions that exploit weak interactions of copper catalysts with carbon-carbon triple bonds. In fact, based on the new findings, Fokin and his team have begun to devise new reactions in which one copper center can be replaced with a different element, to pursue complementary biocompatible and efficient techniques.

Funding for the study was provided by grants from the National Science Foundation (CHE-0848982) and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences at the National Institutes of Health (GM-087620).

Ergo launches the GoNote Mini, a 7inch tablet netbook hybrid, we go handson

We first encountered Ergo Electronics at last year's Gadget Show Live, and since then the Birmingham-based tablet maker has graduated from its humble back-of-the-hall origins to become a major player. Its product range has swelled beyond its original budget ICS slates with a range of AIO PCs, thin-and-light laptops and even a Windows 8 tablet that has more than a few strong hints of a KIRF Surface about it. Now it's launched the GoNote Mini, a scaled down 7-inch version of the education-ready tablet / netbook hybrid that's been doing the rounds since last summer. We got to spend a few minutes playing around with the first production prototype and if you'd like to know more, after the break is where you want to be.

MiiPC: Android-powered PC lets parents monitor kids' online activity

It's a fact of the digital age that parents will worry about what their children get up to online. While some try to address this by teaching their kids how to behave safely online, others will simply place a family computer in a shared room and lurk behind young users watching what they do. The MiiPC is an Android-powered PC for children which allows parents to monitor and control what they are doing via a parental control mobile app.

Launching on Kickstarter, the MiiPC is a compact Android-powered computer which can connect to a monitor or TV and gives your children the big computer experience, without letting them loose on yours. With the ability to use a keyboard and mouse and being designed for large screen connectivity (up to 1080p), it means they can surf the web, run apps, play games and watch videos in the same way they could on most PCs. It works with Flash and runs standard Android apps.

But, what's sure to make the MiiPC even more attractive to online-safety-conscious/paranoid moms and dads, is the parental controls and snooping powers it gives them. In addition to being able to set up different user accounts for members of the family ? with access to age-appropriate apps and websites ? parents can monitor exactly what their kids are doing.

A companion mobile app (available for iOS or Android) gives parents access to real-time information about what is being done on the MiiPC, and by who. It can show whether the computer is in use, what's currently running, which apps or websites have been accessed most recently, and cumulative usage totals ? handy if you discover little Tommy is running up hours of Angry Birds when he claims he's doing his homework.

The app also allows parents to control what can be used by different members of the family ? in a bid to help create a safe online environment for users who might not be equipped/inclined to do this themselves. Options include turning on/off access to particular apps or websites, setting time limits for usage of apps and sites, including which days certain things can be used and how long per day.

On a technical side, the MiiPC uses a Marvell dual core 1.2GHz processor running Android Jelly Bean 4.2. It will be available with either 1GB or 2GB of RAM and has 4GB of internal flash memory (expandable via SD Slot and USB port). There's WiFi (802.11 b/g/n), 10/100Mb Ethernet, and Bluetooth (4.0) along with two USB 2.0 ports, speaker and microphone jacks. The HDMI port can output at 1080p/720p.

While the MiiPC will ship with a number of apps pre-installed ? including productivity software such as KingSoft Office suite ? parents will have access to Google Play and other Android Markets such as Amazon AppStore to add more.

Having already exceeded its Kickstarter target of US$50,000, the MiiPC is expected to start shipping to early bird backers in July. However, a pledge of $99 will still snag you one of the family-friendly computers, though you will probably have to wait until August or September to get your hands on it.

Here's the MiiPC Kickstarter video.

Health insurers lead stocks higher on Wall Street

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at a record high Tuesday after reports on auto sales and factory orders provided the latest evidence that the U.S. economy is strengthening. Traders plowed money back into European stocks as the financial situation in Cyprus appeared to stabilize.

Health insurers powered the gains a day after the government released revised reimbursement rates for Medicare Advantage plans. The new numbers suggest that funding cuts will be less severe than analysts and companies had feared.

The Dow closed up 89.16 points, or 0.6 percent, at 14,662.01. It had risen as high as 14,684 in the late morning.

The Dow broke through an all-time record on March 5. It has risen steadily since then, routinely setting new trading highs.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 8.08 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,570.25. It rose to within two points of its trading high of 1,576 reached on Oct. 11, 2007.

European markets closed sharply higher on the first trading day after a tense, four-day holiday weekend. Paris' CAC-40 rose 2 percent, London's FTSE 100 1.2 percent and Frankfurt's DAX 1.9 percent.

The gains in Europe markets boosted confidence among U.S. investors. While European markets were closed for four days for the Easter holiday, many traders feared that Cyprus' precarious financial situation would worsen. That concern also weighed on U.S. markets Monday, said Peter Tchir, who runs the hedge fund TF Market Advisors.

But no bad news materialized. Instead, Cyprus' international lenders agreed to extend until 2018 its deadline for meeting key budget targets. European markets opened higher and rose strongly after U.S. trading began Tuesday. The gains fed a virtuous cycle that sent stocks higher on both sides of the Atlantic, Tchir said.

"Everyone was waiting to see if Europe had problems from Cyprus," he said. "Instead, we got the all-clear signal."

The trading day began with solid March sales reports from U.S. automakers. Chrysler said it sold more cars and trucks than in any month since the Great Recession began, an increase of 5 percent. Sales for General Motors and Ford rose 6 percent.

Orders to U.S. factories rose 3 percent in February, the best gain in five months, the government said after trading began. The increase was driven by a surge in demand for commercial aircraft, an especially volatile category.

Health care stocks rose the most of the 10 sectors in the S&P 500 index, adding 1.4 percent. The sector is up 17.1 percent this year.

Traders were relieved about the insurers' prospects after Monday's news about Medicare Advantage rates. Preliminary data released in February had raised fears that companies offering the plans would be forced to cut benefits, increase customers' premiums or abandon some markets. This week's data suggest that may not be necessary.

UnitedHealth was the biggest gainer in the Dow. DaVita HealthCare Partners Inc. led the S&P 500 higher. Also among the S&P 500's top 15 gainers were Humana Inc., Aetna Inc. and Cigna Corp.

UnitedHealth rose $2.77, or 4.7 percent, to $61.74. DaVita rose $7.29, or 6.1 percent, to $127.20. Humana gained $4.09, or 5.5 percent, to $79.11. Aetna rose $1.92, or 3.7 percent, to $54.30. Cigna added $1.84, or 2.9 percent, to $64.75.

Airline stocks fell sharply after Delta Air Lines Inc. said a key measure of revenue was hurt last month by government spending cuts, a technical glitch and attempts to get passengers to pay more.

Delta fell $1.31, or 8.1 percent, to $14.94. United Continental Holdings Inc. lost $1.59, or 5.1 percent, to $29.38. US Airways Group Inc. fell 93 cents, or 5.6 percent, to $15.74. JetBlue Airways Corp. dropped 40 cents, or 5.9 percent, to $6.34.

The industry dragged the Dow Jones transportation average down 1.2 percent. The index fell even more on Monday, 1.5 percent, after U.S. manufacturing slowed more than economists forecast in March. The index, which includes airlines like Delta, United and freight companies FedEx and UPS, has gained 14.7 percent this year.

The manufacturing report was "much weaker than expected," according to Jim Russell, an investment director at US Bank. He said companies that are closely tied to the economic cycle "have really taken on some water because of what that implies."

For the second day in a row, small stocks underperformed the market. The Russell 2000 index of small-company stocks fell 4.49 points, or 0.5 percent, to 934.20. The Russell had risen more than large-company indexes in the first quarter, gaining 12 percent versus 11.3 percent for the Dow and 10 percent for the S&P.

The Nasdaq composite rose 15.69, or 0.5 percent, to 3,254.86.

Some other companies making big moves:

? Hewlett-Packard plunged after a Goldman Sachs analyst downgraded the stock, predicting the company's earnings will be weak. Shares fell $1.21, or 5.2 percent, to $22.10.

? Urban Outfitters climbed a day after the clothing and accessories company said sales at stores open at least a year have grown in the high single digits in the first two months of the fiscal quarter started Feb. 1. Sales at stores open at least a year is a key gauge of a retailer's health because it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed. The stock rose $1.46, or 3.8 percent, to $39.87.

? Actavis Inc. rose after a U.S. court declared a rival's patent invalid, clearing the way for Actavis to sell a generic asthma inhaler. The stock added $4.22 or 4.6 percent, to $96.68.

Babies' flexible squeals may enable them to talk later

Communication advance in months after birth tied to language learning

By Bruce Bower

Web edition: April 1, 2013

Babies take a critical step toward learning to speak before they can say a word or even babble. By 3 months of age, infants flexibly use three types of sounds ? squeals, growls and vowel-like utterances ? to express a range of emotions, from positive to neutral to negative, researchers say.

Attaching sounds freely to different emotions represents a basic building block of spoken language, say psycholinguist D. Kimbrough Oller of the University of Memphis in Tennessee and his colleagues. Any word or phrase can signal any mental state, depending on context and pronunciation. Infants? flexible manipulation of sounds to signal how they feel lays the groundwork for word learning, the scientists conclude April 1 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Language evolution took off once this ability emerged in human babies, Oller proposes. Ape and monkey researchers have mainly studied vocalizations that have one meaning, such as distress calls.

?At this point, the conservative conclusion is that the human infant at 3 months is already vocally freer than has been demonstrated for any other primate at any age,? Oller says.

Oller?s group videotaped infants playing and interacting with their parents in a lab room equipped with toys and furniture. Acoustic analyses identified nearly 7,000 utterances made by infants up to 1 year of age that qualified as laughs, cries, squeals, growls or vowel-like sounds.

Trained experimenters separately judged whether each sound an infant made, and the facial expression accompanying that sound, was positive, negative or neutral.

Overall, infants produced the flexible trio of emotion sounds much more often than laughs or cries. Babies most frequently uttered vowel-like sounds, which were less distinctive than babbling that starts at around 7 months of age.

Neuroscientists previously reported that monkeys, apes and humans share an ancient brain pathway linked to emotional sounds such as laughing and crying. In the new study, babies? laughs overwhelmingly expressed positive feelings and cries usually conveyed negative feelings.

Ancient humans must have evolved new neural connections that supported early voluntary control of sounds other than laughing or crying to communicate emotions, remarks psychologist Michael Owren of Georgia State University in Atlanta.

?This groundbreaking work shows that, from the beginning, human infants have flexible vocal chops that put them on a very different developmental course than found in monkeys and apes,? Owren says.

Psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton remains unconvinced that infants, especially at 3 to 4 months old, flexibly communicate with sounds. He notes that in the infants? distinct approaches to matching sounds with facial expressions might reflect confusion more than intention, Lewkowicz says, because babies don?t perceive and understand adultlike emotions until at least 6 months of age and don?t see a relationship between others? facial and vocal expressions until around 8 months. Parents could also have subtly influenced how their babies vocalized in the lab, he suggests.

In diaries kept during the study period, parents reported knowing that their babies flexibly employed the sounds studied by Oller?s group. In lab exchanges, babies made these sounds only upon getting close to parents? faces.

Further research needs to examine how babbling develops from parents? responses to the early vocal flexibility reported in the new study, says psychologist Michael Goldstein of Cornell University.

BJP in India could name controversial politician their prime ministerial candidate

On Sunday, India's Bharatiya Janata Party elevated Narendra Modi to the party's top decision-making bodies. Narendra has been accused of ignoring or stoking violence between Hindus and Muslims.

Gujarat state Chief Minister Narendra Modi waves to supporters in Ahmadabad, India in September 2011. On Sunday, the opposition BJP, which has resisted naming a prime ministerial candidate from among its many leaders, began coalescing around Modi, the successful and deeply polarizing politician.

The main opposition Hindu nationalist party on Sunday elevated Narendra Modi, a deeply divisive figure in Indian politics, to the party's top decision-making bodies, with his supporters believing he could become prime minister in national elections next year.

However, Rajnath Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party president, did not name Modi as the party's prime ministerial candidate, apparently because of opposition from some allies.

Smriti Irani, a BJP vice president, said the party would make a decision on the issue later. It is not known when the party will announce its candidate. The elections are due in May 2014.

On Sunday, Modi was made a member of the BJP's parliamentary board and the central election committee, which will select candidates and lead the election campaign.

Modi, 62, currently heads the BJP government in western Gujarat state. For more than a decade, he has worked relentlessly to market the idea of Gujarat state as a business-friendly state and become a hero to a generation of businessmen.

Modi says he has transformed his state, bringing it industries, jobs, electricity and water in a country where power outages and joblessness are epidemic.

However, Modi is accused by rights groups and survivors of not doing enough to stop the violence and even stoking it when marauding mobs of Hindus killed and burned their way through Muslim neighborhoods in Gujarat state in 2001, leaving more than 1,100 people dead. He was never charged with a crime.

The riots began in February 2002 when a train filled with Hindu pilgrims was attacked by a Muslim mob in a small Gujarat town. A fire erupted ? it remains unclear whether it was arson ? and 60 Hindus burned to death. In retaliation, Muslims were attacked across the state. Since that bloodletting, Modi has ruled over a state sharply divided along religious lines.

In 2005, the U.S. State Department denied a visa to Modi under the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, which bars people responsible for violations of religious freedom from getting a visa.

The Congress party, which has led India's national government for the past nine years, has seen its position dramatically weakened in recent years, its reputation battered by clumsy political maneuvering, weak leadership and a seemingly endless stream of corruption scandals.

The BJP is expected to pose a strong challenge to the Congress party in the 2014 elections.

Kapil Sibal, a Congress party leader and telecommunications minister, said Sunday that the elevation of a controversial leader would pose a serious challenge to the BJP in the run-up to the elections.

The Big Roundtable Rethinks The Editorial Model For Long-Form Journalism, Hits Its Kickstarter Goal

big roundtableMichael Shapiro isn't the sort of person I'd expect to circumvent the gatekeepers of traditional journalism. He's a professor at the Columbia School of Journalism, and he said he's been published in The New Yorker, Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, and Sports Illustrated ? in other other words, he seems to be on pretty good terms with those gatekeepers. Yet Shapiro is launching a new journalism startup called The Big Roundtable. The reason? He said that there are a lot of untested assumptions in the journalism world. As a parallel, he pointed to book publishing, where he said it was long believed that "black people don't buy books." There was, in fact, "this whole sub rosa world" of independent black book stores, with its own bestsellers like Iceberg Slim's Pimp: The Story Of My Life. Yet traditional publishers had no idea that world existed until the mainstream success of writers like Terry McMillan in the 1990s.

?The Hangover? re-imagined as a horror film (video)

In 2009, ?The Hangover? dominated the summer box office on its way to becoming the most profitable ?R? rated comedy ever. But the film, and its sequel, are certainly not without their critics.

Regardless of where you stand, you?ll probably enjoy this hilariously edited movie trailer for the film, which re-imagines The Hangover as a horror movie.

Warning, there are two spots of foul language in the trailer, so don?t this one in front of your kids.

Film student Richard W. Scott edited the footage as part of his college dissertation in order to, in Scott?s words, serve as, ?part of an experimental investigation into the power of post-production techniques on a movie's genre.?

Scott employs several editing techniques that are common in today?s horror films. For examples, the color-coding of the trailer has been saturated into sepia tones, as opposed to the actual film?s bright and welcoming colors. And the music has been replaced with sharp and harsh sound cues which put the viewer on edge.

But the real creativity lies in the way that Scott has pieced the footage together, to make the film appear to be a dark journey into a world where the character of Alan, portrayed by Zach Galifinakis, is actually a murderer on the loose in Las Vegas wreaking havoc upon the lives of his unsuspecting friends and anyone else who stumbles across his path.

As Alan declares at the end of the clip, ?I don?t care what happens. I don?t care if I kill someone.?

And if you want to see more of Scott's work, he has put together another clip for his dissertation, which re-imagines the 2005 film "Batman Begins" as a comedy.
