Up front tackle returning starter Jesse Williams comes in at 6?4? and 320 bills. His stats weren?t sexy, but the Alabama 3-4 defense isn?t always designed for the linemen to put up crazy numbers. Williams might end the year as the best defensive player in the SEC. The secondary is making a line change too, however, Vinnie Sunseri (All-Freshman SEC), Ha?Sean Clinton-Dix and DeMarcus Milliner all saw playing time last year, like everyone else on this defense they were all top flight recruits who will be replaced by more top flight recruits should they not pan out.

As a result, Alabama has been able to physically dominate the front lines of about 99% of their opponents the last 4-5 years. D.J. Fluker is another name to watch on that line. He?ll undoubtedly be running game in the NFL one day. These guys will be looked at again to help create holes for the Alabama rushers, as the Tide are without Trent Richardson this year. OH NO WHAT SORT OF AWESOME TALENT DO THEY HAVE TO REPLACE HIM WITH? Eddie Lacy who we all saw in spurts last year will get the majority of the carries this fall (631 yards rushing in 2011), but look for freshman T.J. Yeldon to eat away at that as the season progresses. He?s the future of the Alabama backfield. A.J. McCarron might be the best quarterback Alabama has seen in a long time. He?s incredibly smart, only throwing on 5 interceptions as a sophomore, while completing almost 70% of his passes. Alabama will always lean on the running game, but A.J. McCarron?s arm isn?t a bad backup plan.

Will dispute prevents burial of Sherman Hemsley

EL PASO, Texas (AP) ? The embalmed body of actor Sherman Hemsley, who became famous for his role as television's George Jefferson, will be kept in refrigeration at an El Paso funeral home until a local court rules on the validity of his will.

In the will Hemsley signed six weeks before dying of lung cancer July 24 he named Flora Enchinton, 56, whom he called a "beloved partner," as sole beneficiary of his estate, which is estimated in court documents to be more than $50,000.

The will is being contested by Richard Thornton, of Philadelphia, who claims to be Hemsley's brother and says the will might not have been made by the actor.

Enchinton told The Associated Press on Wednesday that she had been friends with Hemsley and had been his manager for more than 20 years. Over the time she, Hemsley and Hemsley's friend Kenny Johnston, 76, lived together, she said he never mentioned any relatives.

"Some people come out of the woodwork ? they think Sherman, they think money," Enchinton said. "But the fact it that I did not know Sherman when he was in the limelight. I met them when they (Hemsley and Johnston) came running from Los Angeles with not one penny, when there was nothing but struggle."

Mark Davis, listed in court documents as Thornton's lawyer in El Paso, did not immediately respond to messages left at his office.

There is no date set for the case to be heard, court officials said. Enchinton said she hopes it will all be cleared in court.

The Philadelphia-born Hemsley played Jefferson in the CBS sitcom "All in the Family," then starred in the spinoff "The Jeffersons" from 1975 to 1985. It was one of TV's longest-running and most successful sitcoms, particularly noteworthy for its predominantly black cast.

Hemsley made George Jefferson ? the bigoted, blustering Harlem businessman ? one of TV's most memorable characters and a symbol for urban upward mobility.

NASA Mars rover begins trek to new destination

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The Mars rover Curiosity is hitting the road.

It headed east Tuesday, driving 52 feet toward a spot where it will use its robotic arm for the first time to drill into bedrock. It'll take weeks for the six-wheel NASA rover to reach the site called Glenelg about a quarter mile away.

"It's nice to see some Martian soil on our wheels," mission manager Arthur Amador said in a statement Wednesday.

The drive was the third and longest one yet since the car-size rover touched down in an ancient crater Aug. 5 to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for life. The early drives have been deliberately short, allowing Curiosity to identify any hazards on the road and so that engineers can gain practice driving on the Martian terrain.

Scientists have said they eventually expect the rover to travel about the length of a football field a day.

Curiosity spent Wednesday at its new locale, snapping pictures of a distant mountain that is its ultimate destination. Intriguing layers of rocks have been spotted at the base and most of its two-year mission will be spent examining the lower slopes.

Since landing, Curiosity has been busy checking out its instruments and it's not done yet. Next week, it will make a longer stop along the way to Glenelg to continue its health checkups.

System-wide network outage cripples United Airlines

Thousands were stuck in line in Newark airport Tuesday afternoon, after United Airlines experienced a system-wide computer outage.

Thousands of United Airlines passengers are?experiencing?flight delays and long lines nationwide after the system-wide network outage took the airline offline for at least two hours on Tuesday.

The Chicago-based airline confirmed the computer troubles on their official Twitter and Facebook pages Tuesday afternoon: "We have a network outage and are working to get systems back online. We'll update soon."

The FAA had ground stops for in-bound United flights at Newark, San Francisco and Houston airports, but it was later lifted.

"UAL's computer went down," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement. "It's back up ... but the delays we're seeing are absolutely a United problem, not an ATC (air traffic control) issue."

Thousands of passengers were stuck in line at Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday afternoon, according to NBC News' Jason White, who was among the mass of travelers waiting in line.

The outage of the "SHARES" system affects things like reservations, ticketing and check-ins, which is critical for?boarding?passengers. The system is carried over from Continental Airlines. United adopted the reservation platform on March 3.

The airline's website was also down for a temporary period, but is now running again.

In a statement, United Airlines said it "is in the process of resuming normal operations following a temporary network outage that affected its airports and website Tuesday afternoon."

The carrier said it "apologizes for the disruption caused to travelers at affected airports," and is allowing customers on affected flights to cancel or rebook their itineraries without penalty.

Softer fast food restaurant lighting and music can cut calorie intake 18 percent

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? 0mYour mood for food can be changed by a restaurant's choice of music and lighting, leading to increased satisfaction and reduced calorie intake, according to a new study.

"When we did a makeover of a fast-food restaurant, we found that softer music and lighting led diners to eat 175 fewer calories and enjoy it more," said the study's lead author, Brian Wansink, professor of marketing and director of Cornell University's Food and Brand Lab.

Wansink and his co-author, Koert van Ittersum of the Georgia Institute of Technology, found that softening the lighting and music in fast-food restaurants didn't change what people ordered, but it caused them to eat 18 percent less of what they ordered -- 775 calories instead of 949. They also rated the food as more enjoyable. The results are posted online in the journal Psychological Reports.

The Wansink-Ittersum study counters the popular notion that people who dine in a relaxed environment, with soft lighting and mellow music, will order more food and eat more than those in a more typical dining environment.

"These results suggest that a more relaxed environment increases satisfaction and decreases consumption," Wansink said. "This is important information for fast-food restaurants, which are often accused of contributing to obesity: Making simple changes away from brighter lights and sound-reflecting surfaces can go a long way toward reducing overeating -- and increase their customers' satisfaction at the same time."

Pitney Bowes Survey Shows Consumer Preferences for Health Insurance Communications Vary By Generation in U.S.

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- New research from Pitney Bowes Inc. (NYSE: PBI) uncovers the need for health insurance providers to take a closer look at their approaches to billing and claim information to effectively communicate with the various age groups they serve. While U.S. consumers share some characteristics on how they like to receive communications from their health insurance provider, there are also key generational differences.

Commissioned by Pitney Bowes, the polling firm ORC International surveyed approximately 1,000 U.S. adults regarding their preferences for receiving billing and claim information from their health insurance provider.

Results showed that 46 percent of total respondents want to receive billing and claim information by physical mail. However, more than one-third of consumers polled (38 percent) want to receive health insurance information both physically through mail and digitally by logging into secure online sites. As a result, health insurance providers should employ a multi-channel approach to communications to satisfy all customers.

Interestingly, respondents in the older age brackets are just as interested in multi-channel communications as Americans who are under 35-years-old.

?In today?s healthcare environment, changes in technology and consumer preferences are increasing the complexity of customer communications,? said Christoph Stehmann, president, Pitney Bowes Document Messaging Technologies. ?To be successful, health insurance providers need to understand their customer base, make sure messages are clear in statements and bills, and use multi-channel communications to meet the preferences of all age groups.?

When it comes to patient information, protecting data is critical in the healthcare industry. Overall, 82 percent of respondents surveyed said they trust their health insurance provider. Looking across the age groups, seniors (65-year-olds and above) trust their health insurance providers the most at 96 percent. Consumers in the 45 to 54-year-old age bracket trust their provider the least at 77 percent.

While consumer trust is high, the survey showed there is room for improvement when it comes to message clarity in communications. Nearly two-thirds of respondents (63 percent) gave their provider top grades for how clearly they communicate information in statements. However, 37 percent gave average or below average grades.

Looking across the age groups, health insurance providers received the highest grades for clarity in statements from seniors (65 years-old and over) with 75 percent giving an ?A? or ?B.? Providers received the lowest grades from the 45 to 54 year-old and 55 to 64-year-old age groups with 16 percent of both groups giving a ?D? or ?F.?

Using simple, easy-to-understand language on statements was the single most important step health insurance providers can take to make their information more clear according to survey respondents (36 percent).

Additional survey highlights include:

• More than three-quarters of respondents (78 percent) say they prefer to have a phone conversation versus using e-mail, live online chat or physical mail to get in touch with their provider when they have a problem or question about a claim or their benefits. This percentage is higher among the eldest age groups. The youngest age groups are the most likely to not contact their health insurance provider.
• When asked about what type of additional information consumers would find most helpful in receiving from their provider, 64 percent of respondents chose ways to save money (coupons and discounts) and this was highest with 18 to 24-year olds at 72 percent and lowest with 65 year-olds and over (58 percent). Forty-one percent of total respondents said they would find information on ways for improving the health of their family the most helpful and this was highest among the three youngest age groups. Twenty-eight percent of respondents chose ways that they can improve my appearance and health as the most helpful information.
• When asked whether a respondent?s health insurance provider offers information on healthy living or wellness programs, 22 percent didn?t know. Fifty-eight percent said yes and 20 percent said no.
• Among the base of respondents who do have access to healthy living information/wellness programs, only half are taking advantage of them (51 percent). This suggests that health insurance providers have additional opportunities to use customer communications to drive healthier behaviors among their covered populations.

Methodology:

These results are based on 1,018 interviews conducted online from May 7-9, 2012 among a demographically representative U.S. sample of adults age 18 and over. The survey was conducted by Online CARAVAN ?, an omnibus service of ORC International for Pitney Bowes.

CAIRO, Aug 27, 2012 (AFP) -

Egyptian authorities has denied entry to the daughter of the jailed symbol of the Bahraini opposition movement, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, Cairo airport sources said on Monday.

Maryam al-Khawaja flew straight back to Copenhagen after arriving in Cairo on Sunday, having been denied entry ?for security reasons,? the sources said.

Khawaja is international spokesperson for the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights co-founded by her father, who was one of the leading figures of the Shiite-led pro-democracy movement that was crushed by Bahrain?s Sunni-minority rulers in March last year.

She is based in Denmark and, like her father, has joint Bahraini and Danish citizenship.

Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, 52, who was arrested a month after the crackdown, is serving a life sentence in Bahrain handed down for plotting against the state.

He ended a 110-day hunger strike in jail in May. Both the United Nations and international human rights watchdogs have called for his release.

Khawaja?s other daughter Zainab was released in Bahrain in May, after serving a one-month jail sentence on charges of attacking a policewoman at a demonstration.

Bahrain, a small but strategic Gulf state which is the home base of the US Fifth Fleet, came under strong international criticism over last year?s crackdown, which was backed by troops from its Gulf neighbours.

An international panel commissioned by King Hamad to probe the government?s clampdown found that excessive force and torture were used against protesters and detainees.

Amnesty International estimates that 60 people have been killed since the protests broke out in February last year.

Tropical Storm Isaac lashing Florida Keys

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Tropical Storm Isaac gained fresh muscle Sunday as it bore down on the Florida Keys, with forecasters warning it could grow into a dangerous Category 2 hurricane as it nears the northern Gulf Coast.

Isaac drew new strength early Sunday during a warm-water crossing of the Florida Straits after causing weekend havoc in Cuba, where it downed trees and power lines. Before that, Isaac was blamed for four deaths in Haiti.

On Key West, locals followed time-worn storm preparedness rituals while awaiting the storm after Isaac swamped the Caribbean and shuffled plans for the Republican National Convention. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Sunday that Isaac had started lashing the Keys with rain and wind by late morning.

A steady line of cars moved north Saturday along the Overseas Highway, the only road linking the Florida Keys. Residents boarded up windows, laid down sandbags and shuttered businesses ahead of the approaching storm. Even Duval Street, Key West's storied main drag, was subdued for a weekend, though not enough to stop music from playing or drinks from being poured.

"We'll just catch every place that's open," said Ted Lamarche, a 48-year-old pizzeria owner visiting Key West to celebrate his anniversary with his wife, Deanna. They walked along on Duval Street, where a smattering of people still wandered even as many storefronts were boarded up and tourists sported ponchos and yellow slickers.

"Category None!" one man shouted in a show of optimism.

The Keys were bracing storm surge of up to four feet, strong winds and the possibility of tornadoes. The island chain's two airports closed Saturday night, and volunteers and some residents began filing into shelters.

"This is a huge inconvenience," said Dale Shelton, a 57-year-old retiree in Key West who was staying in a shelter.

Isaac has already left a trail of suffering across the Caribbean.

The storm's center made landfall Saturday near the far-eastern tip of Cuba, downing trees and power lines. In the picturesque city of Baracoa, the storm surge flooded the seaside Malecon and a block inland, destroying two homes.

At least four people were reported dead in Haiti, including a 10-year-old girl who had a wall fall on her, according to the country's Civil Protection Office. The government also reported "considerable damage" to agriculture and homes. Nearly 8,000 people were evacuated from their houses or quake shelters and more than 4,000 were taken to temporary shelters.

The Grise River in Haiti overflowed north of Port-au-Prince, sending chocolate-brown water spilling through the sprawling shantytown of Cite Soleil, where many people grabbed what possessions they could and carried them on their heads, wading through waist-deep water.

Scores of tents in quake settlements collapsed. In a roadside lot in Cite Soleil, the dozens of tents and shelters provided by international groups after the earthquake were tossed to the ground like pieces of crumpled paper, and the occupants tried to save their belongings.

After Isaac passes the Keys, it will move over the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to gain significant strength. It could ultimately make landfall on the northern Gulf Coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday. However, forecasters have stressed that the storm's exact path remains highly uncertain.

"Definitely the northern Gulf Coast should be preparing for a hurricane right now," Jessica Schauer, a meteorologist with the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

A Category 2 hurricane is capable of top sustained winds of 96 to 110 mph (154 to 177 kph).

Isaac isn't likely to hit Tampa head-on, but it could still lash the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention ramps up. A tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of Florida's west coast, including Tampa Bay.

Convention officials said they would convene briefly on Monday, then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm is expected to have passed. Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, declared a state of emergency and canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

As of 8 a.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 80 miles (129 kilometers) southeast of Key West, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac had top sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph).

It was moving to the west-northwest toward the Keys at 18 mph (29 kph). Tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 205 miles (335 km) from the center, meaning storm conditions were possible in many places even if Isaac does not pass directly overhead.

A hurricane warning was in effect for the Keys, including the Dry Tortugas and for the west coast of Florida from Bonita Beach south to Ocean Reef, among some other areas, authorities said.

Meanwhile, a hurricane watch was in effect from east of Morgan City, La. ? including the New Orleans metro area ? eastward to Indian Pass., Fla.

Doty strolls, marches, and/or glides into his Minneapolis courtroom the morning after the Giants host the Cowboys in the first game of the regular season, the NFL and NFLPA will get their first glimpse into the predispositions of the jurist who?ll decide whether or not the union?s surprising claim of a ?secret salary cap? in 2010 may proceed.

It was a surprise because the claim came well after 2010 ended, and after the new CBA presumably wiped the slate clean between the league and the players, erasing all pending legal issues including any collusion claims that could have been made based on actual or perceived restraints on spending in a year that was supposed to have none.? (Technically, the labor deal imposed a handful of limits in 2010, such as restrictions on the free-agent signings by the teams finishing in the final eight from 2009.)

It was a surprise also because the NFLPA had signed off on cap penalties imposed on the Cowboys and Redskins, penalties which revealed that the two teams were being punished because they didn?t comply with the ?spirit? of a salary cap that didn?t exist.? The union agreed with the penalties because the union desperately needed the NFL likewise to agree to a number-fudging that would allow the NFLPA to avoid the kind of reduction in the salary cap from 2011 to 2012 that would have been awkward, to say the least, as executive director DeMaurice Smith?s re-election approached.

Now that the billable hours have hit the fan, Judge Doty will have to decide whether he?s more persuaded by technicality, or by equity.

As framed by the NFLPA in its final written submission, a copy of which PFT has obtained, the players claim that the NFL didn?t do enough to engineer a release and waiver of claims for past collusion when the new CBA was finalized and all pending litigation was concluded in 2011.? Apart from whether the documents drafted by the parties contained the right magic words to make the claims for collusion in 2010 disappear, the NFLPA has advanced an intriguing argument based on the nature of class actions.? The union smartly argues that claims made on behalf of a class of litigants can be extinguished by court order only.? And so the union claims that, by not ensuring that Judge Doty would officially wipe out the collusion claims, the collusion claims weren?t wiped out.

If Judge Doty agrees, it will mean that the league?s lawyers screwed up.

Balanced against that technical application of the rules is fairness and common sense.? Regardless of the specific words or procedures used by the parties, the idea was to hit the reset button on all legal issues between the parties.? The league made concessions and the players made concessions and now the players are trying to avoid one of the concessions they made.? Some judges would decide, quickly, that such an outcome simply isn?t fair.

Compounding the potential for a finding that the NFLPA is pushing for a fundamentally unfair outcome is the fact that the players gladly signed off on cap penalties that necessarily exposed the existence of collusion in 2010 in order to get something the NFLPA needed ? a higher salary cap in 2012.? It?s unseemly, to say the least, for the NFLPA to now try to use that which it gave up to get a high cap number as the basis for seeking billions in collusion damages for allegedly depressed spending in 2010, especially since it should have been obvious to anyone paying attention that something fishy was going on.

Did the NFL engage in collusion in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Should the NFLPA has done something about it in 2010?? Yes, in our opinion.? Is there something that doesn?t feel right about the NFLPA agreeing to the cap penalties that made the collusion crystal clear and then suing for collusion?? Absolutely.

But what we/I/anyone else thinks doesn?t matter.? Judge Doty will provide the first official word on the issue.? And if Doty agrees that the collusion case may proceed, look for the NFL try to appeal that decision immdiately, arguing that if the next level in the federal court system sees it the NFL?s way, there?s no reason to spend the time and money associated with developing the evidence that would prove collusion.

Even though that evidence should be fairly easy to find.

Romney stresses economy as convention nears

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney pledged to help women entrepreneurs and innovators eager to create small businesses on Saturday in an economy-themed countdown to the Republican National Convention, taking shape in a city bristling with security and bracing for a possible hurricane.

"Women in this country are more likely to start businesses than men. Women need our help," said the Republican presidential challenger, eager to relegate recent controversy over abortion to the sidelines and make the nation's slow economic recovery the dominant issue of his convention week.

The former Massachusetts governor campaigned with running mate Paul Ryan in battleground Ohio as delegates arrived in Florida by the planeload. Across town, technicians completed the conversion of a hockey arena along Tampa Bay into a red, white and blue-themed convention hall.

Weather permitting, the convention opens Monday with quick ratification of a conservative platform expected, followed by Romney's nomination in a traditional roll call of the states timed for network evening news coverage. It ends Thursday with his acceptance speech, a prime-time appearance aides hope will propel him into a successful fall campaign and eventually, the White House.

The polls made the race a close one, narrow advantage to Obama, as two weeks of back-to-back conventions approached. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on television ads, with hundreds of million more to come, almost all of it airing in a small group of battleground states expected to settle the election.

The list included Florida as well as North Carolina, where the Democratic National Convention will be held in one week's time.

After Romney's uneven run through the primary contests of winter and spring, the GOP convention was made to order for him from start to finish. Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and other foes from the long-ago primaries weren't even a nuisance as the four-day event approached.

But the same couldn't be said for Tropical Storm Isaac, lashing Haiti and Cuba as it churned menacingly through the Caribbean.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency as the storm approached the Florida Keys, more than 400 miles from Tampa. Forecasters said it was on a track to head west of the convention city, but predicted strong winds and rain at a minimum on Monday as the delegates meet.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," Scott said.

Apart from weather concerns, a heavy security presence was already in evidence. Miles of fencing were designed to create a secure zone around a tract of land that included the convention hall, the hotel where Romney will stay and a nearby convention center where journalists and others worked.

With demonstrations expected in the days ahead, National Guard troops armed with rifles patrolled nearby streets. They augmented police out in force, some on bicycles. Authorities reported no arrests.

Obama did his best to intrude on the Republican unity tableau.

In an interview with The Associated Press, he accused Romney of holding "extreme positions" on economic and social issues, while pledging a willingness on his own part to agree to "a whole range of compromise" with Republicans if he is re-elected.

He did not elaborate, but his pledge seemed designed to appeal to independents and other voters who say they are tired of seemingly perpetual campaign bickering and Washington gridlock.

But Romney said Obama's entire campaign rested on his ability to persuade people to ignore his record and listen instead to his rhetoric.

"It is not his words people have to listen to. It's his action and his record," he said in his appearance in Powell, Ohio. "And if they look at that, they'll take him out of the office and put people into the office who'll actually get America going again."

Romney's speech included an appeal to women made on economic grounds rather than on the basis of social issues like abortion, the sort of approach the Republican hopes will eat into Obama's polling advantage among female voters.

"I want to make sure that we help entrepreneurs and innovators. I want to speak to the women of America who have dreams, who begin businesses in their homes, who begin businesses out in the marketplace, who are working at various enterprises and companies," he said.

"... Our campaign is about making it easier for entrepreneurs, women and men, to start businesses, to grow businesses," Romney said. He said most jobs are created by small businesses rather than larger firms or corporations.

Romney envisioned an economic resurgence fueled by abundant energy, expanded trade and a skilled workforce. If that happens, "America is going to surprise the world. We're going to stand out as a shining city on a hill in part because of our extraordinary economy," he said to the cheers of an estimated 5,000 supporters.

Romney's determination to turn the campaign's attention to the economy follows two weeks of controversy over Medicare, courtesy of Obama's campaign, as well as abortion, the result of a comment by Rep. Todd Akin, the party's candidate in a Senate race in Missouri.

Romney joined an unsuccessful effort by party leaders to force Akin to quit his race after he said women who are raped rarely become pregnant, a view unsupported by medical evidence.

He also fought back hard in recent days in person and television advertising against Obama's allegations that he and running mate Ryan would remake Medicare in a way that would undermine the health of future seniors.

Romney's objective appears to be to erode Obama's advantage among women voters and those who say Democrats are better equipped to handle Medicare, the giant health care program for seniors.

In the AP interview, Obama said it was Romney's promises that represented the real threat to the economy and the pocketbooks of millions.

"Mitt Romney is proposing a $5 trillion tax cut that disproportionately goes to the wealthiest Americans. And he will pay for that by gutting investments in things like education, infrastructure, basic science and research, voucherizing Medicare...."

Timeline: Cycling - Armstrong drops fight against USADA charges

(Reuters) - Seven-times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong said on Thursday he would no longer fight doping charges by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Here is a timeline of the events surrounding USADA's procedures against the retired American cyclist.

June 12, 2012 - The USADA notifies Armstrong that formal procedures against him have commenced over allegations he used performance-enhancing drugs. The USADA tells the cancer survivor they have forwarded their allegations to the Anti-Doping Review Board, which would decide whether to proceed.

In response, Armstrong releases statement describing the allegations as 'baseless' and 'motivated by spite', highlighting the U.S. Justice Department's decision not to pursue charges after a two-year investigation.

June 22 - Lawyers for Armstrong ask the agency's review board to recommend to the USADA to end its pursuit of the allegations.

June 29 - USADA review board unanimously recommends bringing charges, meaning the case will go to an arbitration hearing should Armstrong elect to challenge the charges.

July 9 - Armstrong files a federal lawsuit seeking to stop the USADA from proceeding with their case. However, later the same day, a federal judge dismisses the lawsuit, calling it a "lengthy and bitter polemic" rather than the "short and plain statement of detailed facts".

July 10 - Three former associates of Armstrong are handed lifetime bans for their involvement in the alleged doping conspiracy. Team doctor Luis Garcia del Moral, consulting doctor Michele Ferrari and trainer Jose "Pepe" Marti were all banned from the sport for life after USADA found they had violated a series of anti-doping regulations.

Armstrong refiles lawsuit seeking to stop the USADA's case.

July 11 - The USADA gives Armstrong 30 more days to answer charges that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

Aug 20 - A U.S. federal judge dismisses Armstrong's efforts to block the USADA's probe.

Aug 23 - Armstrong announces he will no longer fight the USADA's doping charges, which quickly says it will strip him of all results dating back to August 1, 1998, including his seven consecutive Tour de France titles from 1999, and ban him from competitive cycling.
