Did the President Endanger His Family's Finances?

In her speech to the convention on Tuesday night, I found it odd that Mrs. Obama was celebrating actions that strike me as the height of irresponsibility.

According to Mrs. Obama, the President is "the same man who started his career by turning down high paying jobs..." As a person that has benefited from Federal Student Loans and has to deal with the debt that those loans bring, I wonder if the young Obama's decision to turn down high paying jobs wasn't just plain thoughtless and ill-considered.

Now I can understand the urge to do good deeds. Certainly it is a noble thing to work in underprivileged communities and to help those who cannot afford what you would normally need to pay a graduate of Harvard Law School. Surely if he was turning down such lucrative job offers he had his school bills taken care of right?

"When it comes to giving our kids the education they deserve, Barack knows that like me and like so many of you, he never could've attended college without financial aid.";

This is true, many people in this country cannot afford to go to school without financial aid, of course many of us in the country also cannot afford to attend Princeton, Columbia or Harvard either. Michelle graduated from Princeton in 1985 and Harvard Law School in 1988 and was working as an attorney when she met the future President while he was a summer associate at her firm.

President Obama graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University in 1983 and from Harvard Law School in 1991.? In 1991 he also signed a contract to write a book and a Fellowship position for two years at the University of Chicago Law School.

"And believe it or not, when we were first married, our combined monthly student loan bills were actually higher than our mortgage.? We were so young, so in love, and so in debt."

So in the Obamas we have a young married couple, both are lawyers, one has a job as an attorney and the other has a book contract and a fellowship at one of the most prestigious law schools in the country.?

Just how much debt where they carrying and what was their combined income?? If the media is doing their job they would dig into this story, because I get the feeling that their "struggle" was much different than graduates today are facing with the rising spiral of education costs.

"You see, for my dad, that's what it meant to be a man.? Like so many of us, that was the measure of his success in life - being able to earn a decent living that allowed him to support his family."

I wonder what Michelle Obama's father thought of Barack Obama endangering his family's financial future by turning down lucrative jobs that were being thrown his way.

Either the First Lady is vastly overstating their family's financial situation in a naked attempt to pander to voters, or much like President Obama does today, he endangered those who depended on him with his poor decisions.? If the First Lady's story is true, then President was offered opportunities to give his family a life of financial security and turned down that chance, that isn't character or bravery, that is stupidity.
