Americans think Iraq war was a mistake

A majority of Americans say it was a "mistake" to send U.S. troops to Iraq 10 years ago, according to a new Gallup poll.

Fifty-three percent of respondents said the U.S. government made the wrong move when it invaded that country on March 20, 2003. The war ended in December 2011, after nearly 4,500 Americans had died there.

The still-ongoing conflict in Afghanistan sees more support from the public. Fifty-one percent of those polled said it was not a mistake to send troops there. Nearly 35,000 troops are scheduled to return from Afghanistan by the end of 2013, reducing the U.S. military presence by half. The Obama administration has promised to end the war there entirely by 2015.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
