Great Thoroughbred Race Horses: Northern Dancer | The Sports ...

Northern Dancer was one of the great horses in the history of horse racing. The horse was from Canada and was born on the 27th of May in 1961. The horse lived a long life, surviving until the 16th of November in 1990.

?

Northern Dancer received his name from his damsire Native Dancer. Native Dancer was well known as being a great horse and many people expected Northern Dancer to carry on the legacy. Northern Dancer?s sire was Nearctic and the grandsire was Nearco. His dam was Natalma. He was a dark bay color and was bred by Edward Taylor. The owner of the horse was Windfields Farm and he was trained by Horatio Luro.

?

Interestingly enough, the horse was put up for sale in Toronto, Canada, but many buyers thought that his price tag of 25 thousand dollars was too big. Because of this, the horse was forced to join the racing stable at Windfields Farm.

?

Over the course of his career, Northern Dancer managed to compile a record of 14-2-2 in 18 career races. These great performances brought his career earnings to more than 580 thousand dollars.

The success all began in 1963 for the horse. The horse had several major wins that got his career going in the right direction. The horse managed to win some great races, such as the Coronation Futurity Stakes, Summer Stakes and Remsen Stakes during the year. He was definitely an up and coming horse after his great performances in 1963.

?

While he was an up and coming performer, I don?t know if anyone expected him to have so much success in 1964. The horse racked up wins at races such as the Flamingo Stakes, Florida Derby, Blue Grass Stakes and the Queen?s Plate. While these were great victories for the horse, his most impressive victories of the year came at the biggest races of the year.

?

The 1964 Kentucky Derby was probably the biggest and most important win of the year and for the career of Northern Dancer. The horse was not just a one hit wonder in big races that year, but he also managed to bring home the victory from the Preakness Stakes. This meant that the horse won the first two legs of the Triple Crown. While many expected Northern Dancer to complete his journey towards winning the Triple Crown, the fantasy never materialized.

?

Northern Dancer was named the US Champion 3-Yr-Old Colt in 1964 and was also named the Canadian Horse of the year. While he was no longer racing he continued to have success later in his life. He was named the ?leading sire? in several different countries and was named the leading broodmare sire in the last year of his life. He was named a member of Canada?s Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and the United States Racing Hall of Fame. In 1999 the horse was even made famous by having his own postage stamp. He was truly one of the great horses of all time.
