Family Activity ? Gardening | Latter Day Woman Magazine

Hopefully you?ve already started your family garden, but if not, hurry and do it soon! ?I think planting season is just about over?

We planted our garden a few weeks ago and are finally seeing some plants grow! ?Last year we did all starter plants, but this year we did all seeds and have seen some results! ?I was a little nervous they wouldn?t do so well, but so far so good.

We live in an apartment, but our stake let us use the fields around one of our church buildings and divided up plots for families to garden. ?Last year we had more tomatoes and squash than we knew what to do do with! ?(And my husband doesn?t even like tomatoes?). ?We have so much fun going out to our garden plot, weeding (when it?s a little plot it?s not too bad), and getting delicious veggies! ?Doesn?t home grown taste so much better than store bought? We walk to the garden with our baby in her stroller to add in some great exercise.

Gardening is a great thing for the family to do together. ?It teaches work, patience, self-reliance, and you reap the rewards together!

I want to share a quick story with you that my dad taught me as a teenager. ?One day I was feeling a little down (probably some teenage drama) and my dad asked me to come weed the garden with him. ?He said it would help me feel better. ?What??? ?Weeding??? Weeding was one of the last things I wanted to do. ?I reluctantly said ok and weeded with him. ?It was in the evening so it was cooler and it did feel really good to get my hands in the dirt. ?Weeding actually made me feel better! ?It?s important that we teach our children to work. ?I really think there?s something to getting our hands a little dirty. :-)

Here are two great articles on gardening that I found at lds.org:

Sewing Seeds of Self-Reliance in Small Places (This is a great one if you don?t have room for a garden)

Happy Gardening!
