The correlation between poor, high fat diets and lack of exercise with the development of type 2 diabetes has been known about for some time now, but new findings from research carried out in the US adds weight to these arguments. The research was published in a journal titled, ?Nature Medicine? and gives new hope in the search for finding the cure for type 2 diabetes.
The body uses beta cells produced by the pancreas to regulate the blood glucose levels. If glucose levels become too high, the pancreatic beta cells will produce a hormone called insulin. Insulin lets the body know that it needs to bring sugar levels back down to a safe level. An enzyme known as GnT-4a absorbs the glucose within the blood to determine how much is present in the body. The studies in question reveal that fat can affect the body?s ability to produce Gnt-4a.
The enzyme that allows all of this to take place is called GnT-4a and the research suggests that fat slows down the production of this critical enzyme. Without it, the body struggles to determine just how much glucose is present and levels can become dangerously high causing the body to behave strangely. The condition can be potentially fatal in the most serious cases.
The research was carried out by scientists from the University of California and the Medical Research Institute at Sanford-Burnham and their findings derived from experiments on mice and human tissue. GnT-4a is produced by two proteins known as FOXA2 and HNF1A, and high levels of fatty acids (common in people with high fat diets) will interfere with these proteins.
The research reinforces the theory that without Gnt-4a, the body will become effectively blind as to the levels of glucose in the blood. Treatments such as beta cell gene therapy and drugs that promote the natural functionality of these beta cells, could significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes The recent findings provide solid grounds for the continued research into type 2 diabetes.
