ALGIERS (AFP) ? The family of an Algerian music legend murdered in 1998 and the lawyer for one of two men jailed for 12 years over the killing vowed Wednesday to appeal the decision.
The family of Lounes Matoub has consistently said that the two men who were sentenced on Monday were innocent and vowed to continue their quest to shed full light on the murder.
"We are going to file a complaint with the highest court of appeal because there is no case against my client Abdelhakim Chenoui," his lawyer Amine Sidhoum told AFP.
On Monday, Malik Madjnoun and Abdelhakim Chenoui were handed 12-year jail terms over the murder of the 42-year-old Berber icon at a mountain roadblock near the Kabylie region's capital Tizi Ouzou.
The musician's widow also said she and her sisters, who were wounded in the attack 13 years ago, would file a complaint against the murder's unknown perpetrators, their lawyer Saleh Hanoune said.
Matoub's sister Malika and mother Aldjia also intend to file a separate complaint.
"The family of the 'Rebel' (Matoub's nickname) will not go silent. The case of my brother's murder will rise up from its own ashes," Malika Matoub was quoted as saying by the El-Watan daily.
She wants a raft of witnesses to be heard over the murder, including Hassan Hattab, a leader of the extremist Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, who claimed responsibility for the killing.
Hattab gave himself up to police in October 2007.
Matoub's murder caused an uproar in Algeria and came during a civil war between Islamic extremists and the security forces.
The singer's fervent secularism and defence of the Berber people made him unpopular both with the government and the Islamists but he remains revered as a popular icon across the country.
