Emory University Hospital will conduct its 3000th bone marrow transplant on May 20, 2010. No other facility in Georgia has performed this many bone marrow or bone marrow stem cell transplants. In the 30 years since the first Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) was performed in Georgia, the program?s mission has been to provide curative therapy for patients with cancer using combinations of high dose chemotherapy with bone marrow or blood stem cell transplants. Milestone at Emory: 3000 Bone Marrow Transplants

Bone Marrow Transplant has been around for some time now. It is also known as Hemopoietic stem cell transplantation and it is an intensive medical procedure conducted either by a medical oncologist or a hematologist. A bone marrow transplant is when special cells (called stem cells) that are normally found in the bone marrow are taken out, filtered, and given back either to the same person or to another person. Bone marrow transplant is a complex procedure like Kidney and liver transplantation and is a boon for patients suffering from various diseases like Thalassemia, Blood Cancer, Myeloma and Lymphoma. HCG is well equipped to do both Autologous & Allogenic BMT. We have well equipped blood bank, micro-biology dept & cell separators. Our policy is to do the transplants as out patient procedures as much as possible to reduce the cost & infection. We are also specialized in doing what is called Bloodless Autologous transplants where patients do not receive any allogenic blood or blood products after the stem cell reinfusion. The period of cytopenias is managed with growth factors & other drugs to prevent bleeding. HCG is only Centre in Asia and the 2nd centre in the world undertaking bloodless Autologous BMT.
